Prepare for a shock loss this week which will send our season into downward spiral which will see us miss finals.

Damn you Wallsy

In all seriousness great article. Surprised to see it from Wallsy though normally he's so negative about well everything

Don't think Wallsy has ever hated Geelong, it's just that he's a massive flip-flopper. It's a nice article - but do love him recycling his 'Steve Johnson has a competition not for goals but for goal assists' fact that he used to drop at least once a quarter (even when Geelong wasn't playing) in 2008.

I've like Walls for a long time, but I just dont connect with the context of the article.
What's the point in mentioning Scarlett and Ottens?
You'd think the article was written in 2011

Was about to type the same. I could have sworn this should have been printed about 18 months ago.

Was a weird article to be honest.
The context to me was more akin to an end of the era "these were my favourite players" kind of article yet he points to the fact that the era is clearly not over, but the latter for mine would be better suited with an article more about the up and comers and why he thinks they will become future stars and not look back to our old (and retired) players....
Like I said, strange article to be honest.

This paragraph sums it all up. Difficult to argue against anything Wallsy has said....for once:

"Geelong supporters have been on one of the greatest football rides of all time. In the past six years, the Cats have won 122 of 147 games. That's an 83 per cent success rate. No other club comes near that. Three premierships have been netted."

i think walls, like just about every other expert, was sick of us winning around 2010 so were happy to sing of our demise, slow to accept our 2011 form but after a year off last year where they could all feel justified that they picked us to 'slide' they are happy to jump back on board this year with renewed enthusiasm.

i think you will find alot of folks on this board were actually in a similar boat, me included. end of 2012 i picked us to scrape into the 8 this year. then after watching the development of our kids through the preseason i tipped us to grab 18 wins which could land us top 2.

been a great ride, i would say from way back as a kid in the 80's we have had a great ride not just the last 7 years. think about it, 8 GFs in 25 years is a bloody amazing result. 3 brownlows, a handful of colemans and norm smiths. and of course 3 premierships. our journey since 1989 has been something else, and i think guys like walls do genuinely appreciate how impressive it has been. far and away the most successful AFL team that is for sure, and how bloody lucky are we to follow them?

2007 is still the sweetest win for me because of all the losses previous, but 2011 was something special as i was able to be there for it, (flew over from perth and it was so bloody cold i bought a second pair of socks on the way to the ground.)

anyway...Stephen Wells needs a statue out front of KP i reckon.

But did we need a columnist to tell us this? This is the biggest issue I have with Walls. When he's dismissive of Geelong it is based on whatever popular tripe is doing the rounds in the football media in general. When he is complementary he just states the obvious. There's no actual insight or astute observation that makes you think "Shit, he's onto something here!".

You're dead right. But it is comforting to know Wallsy appreciates Geelong. I know I rest easier now...

Walls hating the Cats is the biggest myth perpetuated on this board

He's been a fan for years now. He was a skeptic when we were on the rise from 2004 until we won one. Since then he has been on board. He's always loved players like Chappy, SJ and Bartel

Not sure why there is so much hate for Wallsy here. He seems a lot more humble than a lot of the blowhards parading around the media

And in all reality, Walls or any other expert for that matter, really did have a strong case to say that we would drop off & need to rebuild after 5+ years of dominating the game.

Its just a common fact that teams generally dont stay up for an extended period of time - we are just very very lucky as Cats supporters that our Team and management had foresight to keep the star factory going & groom the next breed of champions while our current champions were are the peak of their game.

I think the Walls myth has a lot to do with the fact that we as supporters always have blind faith in our teams ability - founded or unfounded - and we will always like our chances regardless of the reality and always dispute claims from the media when they say anything negative towards our beloved team, true or not.

Strange article I agree - almost a Mea Culpa that would have been more relevant after our 2011 win.
No mention of the recruiting , player development and game style change that has us purring at 4:0 with hopefully another scalp this week.
Having said that I don't mind Walls overall , he is far more interesting than Roos when on the couch for instance.

I reckon the Media is a tough gig as fans tend to pot anyone who is remotely critical of their Club , it's the natural passion in operation
I don't mind guys like Walls , McClure , Richo and even King ( provided he keeps his ego under control) as they are far more interesting than the Lloyds, Roos , Brereton and D'Arcys of this world.
Footy is big business and I'd like to see more modern day past players involved such as Ling, Moons Hall and Brad Johnson to keep it relevant and add greater insights.
