It seems to me that, despite almost 150 years of history, our Cats don't really have a big rival in the way that teams such as Collingwood and Carlton do, or Essendon and Hawthorn, or even the interstate rivalries like Adelaide v Port - rivalries where, no matter how badly a team is travelling, it always draws a lot of attention and crowds. So, does anyone else think that the new Geelong/St Kilda rivalry will ever become a big enough drawcard to become like those traditional rivalries? Even though the teams have only really been considered rivals of late due to the similarity in the way they've risen from mediocrity (priority picks etc aside), it seems like the games between the two teams have included a fair amount of heat and intensity between the players and the fans as well.

Am I bit on the outer here, or do others think the Cats v Saints thing has the potential to become a blockbuster rivalry for the next era of AFL footy?

It doesn't really bother me whether this becomes a rivalry to stand the test of time.... I just love the way that our matches become a financial windfall for both clubs... as you'd imagine nearly all of our games over the next few years are going to be sell outs. I would also think that the AFL will start putting these games at the 'G to make them an even bigger occaision. Lets face it... its good for football and great for our clubs!

Cheers!

our main traditional rivals imo, have always been the doggies

when Ted Witten was on the radio, he always promoted the Cats V. Dogs games as traditional rivals.

Some of my fondest memories are from the early nineties with our Friday night matches against Kangaroos and Essendon, always seemed to be close matches and awesome games to watch, while not "Rivalries" as such, it was just a great time to be watching footy, with the way we are playing now, crowd sizes are growing and the excitement is back.

If Geelong and St. Kilda can keep on the up for a couple of years and both have growing supporter bases we could create a great rivaly between the clubs.

All I know for now is, I can't wait for Saturday to come.

I can certainly see both teams up against each other in finals for the next six to ten years. At the moment, if Geelong had any other team to make a true rival out of, it would be the eagles. Early '90s history would certainly have something to do with that. A local rivalry such as that between us and the saints would probably be a little more interesting and heated, though. Both sides have the talent and the youth to be going up against each other in the big ones in the same way that Essendon and Hawthorn did in the early and mid '80s.

Here's hoping the game this week will be a cracker on par with the game at KP last year, with a similar result.
