A merger would make sense and keep the comp at 18. Especially if it’s two smaller clubs creating one big club. However I doubt it would happen. The AFL have gone too far as it is. unfortunatly there has to be a 20th side now they Devils are coming in.
Shame we cant just get two Vic clubs to merge so we stay at 18 when the Devils come in.

Is it just a coincidence that Brisbane struggled during that period?I don’t want anymore teams, the more teams the less likely your team will win a premiership. Plus the talent dilution. The state of the game between 2011-2017 was not good.
Just announce Canberra as the 20th side now that the NRL has announced Perth.
A Canberra AFL side wouldn’t take long to take over as number 1 over the raiders imo.
The Giants actually focus and play all games in West Sydney.
Get closer to that pollie cash.
Another option would be to rebrand the Giants to something like NSW Giants and have them share tenancy of the SCG with the Swans where they'll have a far better chance of growing their fanbase in the eastern suburbs. Then a Canberra expansion team can focus on growing the game in the ACT + Riverina.Just announce Canberra as the 20th side now that the NRL has announced Perth.

Still need to target West Sydney, it’s a big area that they should focus on.Another option would be to rebrand the Giants to something like NSW Giants and have them share tenancy of the SCG with the Swans where they'll have a far better chance of growing their fanbase in the eastern suburbs. They can still focus on West Sydney at the grassroots level and play some home games at the SCG to tap into the eastern suburbs as well. Both are possible.Still need to target West Sydney, it’s a big area that they should focus on.
Western Sydney Giants playing 11 home games in Sydney, 3 of them at the Olympic Stadium against big clubs. If that doesn’t work for growing the game there, nothing will.I'm not a big fan of the NSW giants, it kinda covers too bigger area and gives the impression of standing for nothing.
If they want a general name that is still more specific to the city and it's surrounds (which was the point of their introduction), just drop the western and be Greater Sydney. Remember they can't be called just Sydney and keeping in the Greater helps emphasise the G logo. So I think in the end either dropping the Greater or dropping the Western would be best.
Western Sydney just has so much potential though and it's own distinct culture, which means if it ever does grow, it has the potential to explode into a big club.
AFL needs to seriously consider St Kilda, Melbourne and North's position in the league.
A Melbourne and St Kilda merger would make a lot of sense.
North relocating seems inevitable.
22 clubs is coming. 21 round home and away. Final 10.Team 20. Canberra.
Merge Saints and Demons. Back to 19.
Relocate North to Sunshine Coast.
Team 20 2.0 - choice between WA3 and SA3.
A Fitzroy supporters view on the world is clouded by emotion, not what's best for the league. Why?
How?
No it doesn't.

By a street.*cough Canberra *cough
Not to mention that there are serious questions about whether all of the 36 umpires now required to umpire 9 games each week are up to AFL standard. Would only get worse if we need 40 or more as the AFL expands.I don’t want anymore teams, the more teams the less likely your team will win a premiership. Plus the talent dilution. The state of the game between 2011-2017 was not good.
Afl wants to expand the comp. Not reduce it. Therefore mergers make no sense. Especially when they will struggle to find other markets. Outside an extra perth team i cant imagine any other club would be more profitable than the worst clubs from melbourne.A Fitzroy supporters view on the world is clouded by emotion, not what's best for the league.
They've played one game in two years on the Sunshine Coast and couldn't even crack 9000. And their average at Lang Park is significantly boosted by two sellout crowds against the Broncos. Regardless, following everything the NRL do is silly. The NRL think it's a good idea to promote their game in the United States and make the Dolphins play a game while their families are enduring a cyclone.

Its the expats kids who end up supporting the local team, the reason the GC failed early is because all the expats were retireesExactly this.
The expat argument is spurious. In my experience, what the majority of expats do is turn up to the 1-2 games a year their old team is playing in their new state. If expats in Qld were so keen on adopting a new Qld team, why aren't they going to games now?
All three of those sides have tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of fans which contribute income to the League. Position considered.AFL needs to seriously consider St Kilda, Melbourne and North's position in the league.

They’d need a smaller ground to play at to get them going. Can’t see them pulling big crowds consistently at the new Gabba from day dot, but they could play at least 3-4 home games at the Gabba against the Pies/Hawks/Tigers/Bombers/Blues/Cats/Lions and should be able to get 30k+ from those clubs.Brisbane is growing rapidly, especially as Melbourne/Vic goes further and further down the dumpster bin. I personally know more than a handful of people who have relocated to Brisbane since Covid, all of them love it. The growth will continue as more and more jobs are available in engineering and construction towards the Olympics.
a 3rd AFL team in a growth area like North Lakes makes a lot of sense, close enough to Sunshine Coast to draw from that market.
