PORT Adelaide Football Club board member Bruce Abernethy formed a conspiracy to steal trade secrets, create a rival company and reap the benefits, according to claims in court documents .

The Monteleones (sp?) that own/owned IJF have been massive supporters of the PAFC over the years. Many, many players have had "jobs" there over the years.

Lade and Poulton are two that readily spring to mind but there have been lots more.

Mr Abernethy has voluntarily acted in the best interests of Port Adelaide to avoid any unnecessary media focus on the club while he concentrates on resolving a commercial dispute that involves a company of which he is a co-owner and director.

Does anyone seriously think this will stop the media from making this a Port issue?

They will be hounding us every chance they get.

We really are battling at the moment aren't we.

I thought the heading could have read 'Channel 7 Sports Presenter' but I guess the media has to protect the media.

If he'd discovered the cure for cancer, he'd be "former Crow Champion and Channel Seven Sports Presenter, Bruce "Abba" Abernethy... "

lol i guarantee 80% or more of south australia only know him as that guy on the news but they still refer to him as that port guy when its a chance to to a shot at us.

what a ***king joke our media has become. what lofty ideals the profession was started with.

to be honest, not just in respect to sports reporting but in general, the fall of the media over the past few decades is one of the great tragedies of our generation.

ours was the generation when the media became less about the truth and informing a public and more about what we can sell. and i mean that in several ways not just actually selling stuff but in what we can spin.

as a guy fighting for his freedom right now said and i paraphrase;

at the crux of democracy is choice, and to make a choice you need information. when you cannot take that choice away you control the information and you control that choice.

I don't know anything specific about this case, but there would be over a dozen similar cases filed each year in each states' courts. Many are aimed at just stopping competition. I've even known of bookshops threatening these types of actions.

They are pretty effective at stopping competition as the remedy used to address the wrong, if it found to have occurred, is an account of profits. That means that the wrong-doer needs to give up the profits they earned as a result of using the confidential information, less an amount for their own effort. That means they can be up for a lot more than merely compensation. There is also the possibility that the new business may be stopped from trading while proceedings are underway. It is potentially ruinous.

So, in short, yes Abernathy might be in trouble but that trouble is that his business may be rendered insolvent and, depending on how he financed it, he may be at risk of personal bankruptcy. However, all of that depends on the outcome of the proceeding, so it might be a while off unless IJF get an injunction. Given that it has proceeded so far without them getting one, it is unlikely. So, again any trouble for Abba is a while off.

I alluded to this in the coaching selection panel thread; it's been common knowledge for months - I can't believe he was put on the panel to start with. Not many fans.

Police are involved, and the IJF guys are incandescent about this; could be in strife.

You really wonder what's going on at Alberton.

There are so many on the panel - who would've noticed if Abernethy wasn't?

Stephen Rowe suggested replacing him on the panel with Dom Cassisi. Laugh, cry, who knows?

It says the duo undercut its tenders,
um, free market economics. now if people intercepted mail or tapped phone lines, but thats not suggested here

poached its suppliers

um, how do you "poach" suppliers?
um, free market anyone?

and stole its workers

as in, they came at night wearing balaclavas and gloves, and had a horse float, and snuck in, and when no one was looking, picked up a few workers and ran out the door with them
how do you steal workers

how do you RESTRICT workers from choosing their own employer. i thought there was a thing called restrictive trade practices?

actually, the more I read this, the MORE i like this abernathy and he is PRECISELY the kind of guy you want at a football club

Makes you wonder what's going on. If we do the complete opposite of what Rowe says, we'll be unbeatable on and off the field.
