Ablett offered $1.2 million by GC

Ablett will go. GC's final offer will be a front-ended contract for something like $7M over 5 years with Gary earning $2M+ in 2011. Considering Geelong will be lucky to be able to offer him half that amount there is no way any sane person would stay. Then consider the fact that Gary is a media shy person and could escape this at the GC, he would be made captain of GC, his brother lives there, GC is a MUCH nicer place to live than Geelong and in 2011 Geelong may no longer be a serious premiership contender. He has achieved everything he wanted to in the game, has given Geelong everything he has during their most successful period ever, took a big paycut on his last contract and owes the club nothing.

Downside for Geelong is they get nothing in return as GC have 1st pick in the PSD, but I doubt Geelong will be the only club in this situation at the end of 2010.

Ignoring your comments on the salary the GC can apparently offer:

A) As a marquee player in the AFL's new hotspot, can he really escape the media?

B) If he's media shy, would he really want to be captain? If he was given the captaincy, wouldn't he be thrust under the spotlight more on the GC than at Geelong? (See the contradiction in your argument?)

C) Didn't Nathan leave the Gold Coast? I'm not entirely sure on this one.

D) Geelong MAY NOT be a serious contender in 2011, but realistically, will the Gold Coast?

E) So the above is an upside? The downside for you is that Geelong WILL get compensated for it. The draft selections the GC have will go to compensating the clubs who lose out of contract players. So, we MIGHT lose Ablett or Selwood, but by my reckoning, there's AT LEAST a number 1 draft pick coming our way. Compensation enough? That's up for debate. But still a fair way away from "getting nothing in return".

Shut the door on your way out, would you?

Yep and Geelong would already know which pics ablett or selwood would bring in compensation.

Loyalty is seriously overrated here. The Gold Coast are doubling his Geelong salary which means a lot more than you may think. Also, who said he was media shy? This year, he's been all over the television and I'm not just talking about awards. He's been on post-match interviews, appeared on the Footy Show, Press Conferences etc, he even stated he wanted to be the captain of Geelong so that disolves the media-shy theory. If Geelong want to keep Ablett from going to the sunny and clean Gold Coast, they'll have to offer him at very least 900k (Probably more) and thus making Geelong's cap problems a lot bigger.

In conclusion, if Geelong decide to keep Ablett by giving him an acceptable pay rise, they'll lose a key player in the process, most likely Selwood. It's just the way money works and believe me, Loyalty and Home-Love aren't key factors here, especially since living in the Gold Coast equates to a much better lifestyle and Ablett's woman will be hungry to get out of dirty old Geelong.

And the Gold Coast theory.

Offer him twice as much, but think of it this way. The tax man will take half of everything extra he gets. He has to uproot and start in a new area without his family, friends etc. Extra cash or not, it has its downsides!

If money is worth more than everything else and Geelong is such a horrible place then why hasn't he already decided to go?

Lol no ones going anywhere. The only people who think there is a real chance of Cats leaving for money are ppl who barrack for other teams and have realised the only way to stop the mighty cats next year is to have the team break up.

Its not like the players would be being paid a pittance at the moment anyways, plus winning premierships ( love putting a plural on that) with your mates would be terrific fun.

Not stressed about this one iota.

Highly doubt Ablett will leave given his rich history with the club. Whilst Junior is a different is a different breed of Ablett, i still feel dollars are not his main priority in life.

Selwood on the hand could be persuaded into leaving, however i think this is simply solved by making Joel our skipper next year.

Gazooka leaving would pitch G-town into a state of mourning: Di style.

Selwood leaving would pitch me headfirst off the Geelong Addy's rooftop... I just love him.

This little snippet from last year keeps the colour in my cheeks:

Geelong people will happily be inspired for some time to come; Selwood sees himself as a career Cat, hopefully with one of his brothers joining him some day - "or two or three of them!" He will sign his first proper contract later this year, but laughs at the prospect of a Lance Franklin-like sum (the Hawk's first big deal was for $1.3 million over three years).

“We've got a lot of good players around this club, and there will be blokes who will take pay cuts because they want to stay around here for the success the club will have. I'll be one of those, that's what I'm willing to do."

Heads in the sand down at the cattery :D

i think someone is pooing himself about gibbs kruizer murphy at the end of next year, because if they are offered the slightest dollar more at the gold coast, they will be off like a rockett, because god knows that morales and loyalty isnt existent at carlton.

This thread title is misleading and should be changed.

According to this article (http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/a...-from-gold-coast/story-e6frf9jf-1225781517812), Gazza has not been offered anything by the GC.

This is the relevant quote from the GC CEO:

"We haven't even spoken dollars to him," Auld said. "But I think he is one of few players to command that money ($1m+)."

So basically, the Gold Coast are interested in Ablett, and think it would take a large salary to get him. Hardly ground breaking stuff.

Wake me up when something of relevance is reported please.

I just can't see him going - he is too inextricably entwined with Geelong. His heart is with the club. I don't think an extra few hundred thousand a year playing for the GC mob is going to be enough to make him up roots and play for some upstart franchise.

I don't think Selwood will leave either but I think there is more of a chance that he would than with Ablett. Still think that he enjoys playing for Geelong too much.

OK I will admit this is a dumb question....

The only thing that is going to happen publicly between now and next year, whether that be in the next few weeks or half way through 2010 is that Ablett and Selwood may sign new contracts with Geelong. Even if they do this, presumably a trade could still happen at the end of 2010. And I am not sure if this is against AFL rules, but unlike the NRL I have never seen a player playing for a club with it already known he will be at a new club the following year - so Gaz or Joel wont be able to sign with GC now. So my point is, I dont think we are going to have an answer for 12 months? Did I miss something?

You would think if Ablett or Selwood had intentions of going to GC that they would at least do Geelong a favour and sign a contract so GC had to trade something rather than pick them up with pick 1 for nothing... or did I miss something again??

Sorry, it is a slow night!

They'd need to engineer a trade I'm pretty sure. As was said earlier, if Ablett or Selwood go, we'd be compensated pretty well for them.

there is no way in the world Selwood would leave, hes a geelong man thru and thru so that im not even worries about, ablett well im 90% sure he will stay but i wouldnt bet my life on it like selwood, selwood is as loyal ap erson as u will get and we will look after him as well as we can with him knowing that hes played in 3gf and 2 flags already, anyone who saw him at half time in the rooms talking to the players know hes a born leader of this club.

number 1# draft pick i would ask of the gold coast for either. if they werent prepared to do that, top 3 draft pick at the very least, if they werent prepared to do that, trade with the next lowest AFL club and tell demetrious gold coast love child to F off

I'd expect 2 of the top 3 picks and one of their young gun players for either of those guys if it came to it.

Yep, this one. If they are contracted, they can't threaten to walk for nothing into the PSD, so it would be this trade of look elsewhere GC. Of course if we can't get them to sign a contract they are gone for nothing.

But they won't go.

Gold Coast would be mad if they focussed their efforts on Ablett over Selwood.

Selwood is younger.
Selwood is not a member of a family with strong ties to the Geelong Football Club.
Selwood has a brother playing in Queensland.
Selwood would come cheaper.
Selwood is captaincy material.

Selwood much more likely to take the same money offered to Ablett. Not likely, but more likely than Ablett.

Agree completely...I just hope Sel doesn't go and that we see him captain Geelong for a very long time :thumbsu:

I've been saying all season that GCFC would have rocks in their heads if they didn't throw everything, including the kitchen sink at Selwood.

There's a lot a Michael Voss about him. He's someone who they could make captain and build the club around for a decade.

Who on here wouldn't seriously consider staying in the same field of work but going to a different employer for twice the money or more?

I'd be gone in a heartbeat.
