Ablett will go. GC's final offer will be a front-ended contract for something like $7M over 5 years with Gary earning $2M+ in 2011. Considering Geelong will be lucky to be able to offer him half that amount there is no way any sane person would stay. Then consider the fact that Gary is a media shy person and could escape this at the GC, he would be made captain of GC, his brother lives there, GC is a MUCH nicer place to live than Geelong and in 2011 Geelong may no longer be a serious premiership contender. He has achieved everything he wanted to in the game, has given Geelong everything he has during their most successful period ever, took a big paycut on his last contract and owes the club nothing.
Downside for Geelong is they get nothing in return as GC have 1st pick in the PSD, but I doubt Geelong will be the only club in this situation at the end of 2010.
E) So the above is an upside? The downside for you is that Geelong WILL get compensated for it. The draft selections the GC have will go to compensating the clubs who lose out of contract players. So, we MIGHT lose Ablett or Selwood, but by my reckoning, there's AT LEAST a number 1 draft pick coming our way. Compensation enough? That's up for debate. But still a fair way away from "getting nothing in return".

Loyalty is seriously overrated here. The Gold Coast are doubling his Geelong salary which means a lot more than you may think. Also, who said he was media shy? This year, he's been all over the television and I'm not just talking about awards. He's been on post-match interviews, appeared on the Footy Show, Press Conferences etc, he even stated he wanted to be the captain of Geelong so that disolves the media-shy theory. If Geelong want to keep Ablett from going to the sunny and clean Gold Coast, they'll have to offer him at very least 900k (Probably more) and thus making Geelong's cap problems a lot bigger.
In conclusion, if Geelong decide to keep Ablett by giving him an acceptable pay rise, they'll lose a key player in the process, most likely Selwood. It's just the way money works and believe me, Loyalty and Home-Love aren't key factors here, especially since living in the Gold Coast equates to a much better lifestyle and Ablett's woman will be hungry to get out of dirty old Geelong.

You would think if Ablett or Selwood had intentions of going to GC that they would at least do Geelong a favour and sign a contract so GC had to trade something rather than pick them up with pick 1 for nothing... or did I miss something again??
They'd need to engineer a trade I'm pretty sure. As was said earlier, if Ablett or Selwood go, we'd be compensated pretty well for them.
Yep, this one. If they are contracted, they can't threaten to walk for nothing into the PSD, so it would be this trade of look elsewhere GC. Of course if we can't get them to sign a contract they are gone for nothing.I'd expect 2 of the top 3 picks and one of their young gun players for either of those guys if it came to it.
Gold Coast would be mad if they focussed their efforts on Ablett over Selwood.
Selwood is younger.
Selwood is not a member of a family with strong ties to the Geelong Football Club.
Selwood has a brother playing in Queensland.
Selwood would come cheaper.
Selwood is captaincy material.
Selwood much more likely to take the same money offered to Ablett. Not likely, but more likely than Ablett.
