Posted by Fomoco in the media thread. Just ****ing knight Simmo already.

2014 - his first year - was the only year he didn't make finals - and even then we still had an 11-11 record. Effectively only beaten to the finalls by a miracle nine game winning streak from Richmond.

That's five years without a negative win-loss ratio and as highlighted above number 1 in the AFL from 2015 onwards in the key metrics for premiership success.

Long live Simmo.

Haha wow, interesting to see that I lost the faith there for a while. Can't remember posting that at all. Such sweet humble pie.

I think many of us did to some extent. I lost faith after the Round 5 thrashing by a then winless Hawthorn in 2017.

I think that game (v Hawthorn) was what set a lot of us off, we were expected get the job done, break the “hoodoo” against a team that was down and out. What followed was a horror show! If I recall, it was pretty hectic on here that day and in the days to follow. But I think that game did turn out to be a catalyst, I think Simmo had already known the team was in decline, but that game (and the horrid Essendon game a few weeks later) was evidence to the powers that be that things needed to change. And here we are now. And things have indeed changed :)

Always thought I was fair and knocked him when necessary (see: Carlton game this year) but that thread is proof that I’ve always backed him when it counts.

Bow to me ye doubting and concerned plebs.

Nah you’re alright, up the bloody Coasters.

The guy has had the goods from very early on.

The only thing I think he's erred on significantly was team selection in 2017 - we should have played more youngsters.

I was a little bit worried we still hadn't developed the real top line midfield over the last few years but we've won the competition regardless. It's probably fair to say it's not the best midfield in competition, but it's close to it and bats very deep now with Yeo, Shuey, Gaff, Redden with Hutchings tagging and a host of players on the next line who can fill in. And on the biggest stage of all it was our midfield which won us the game against an opposition midfield that - on paper anyway - should have us covered. 63 inside 50's to 48 and very little impact out of Grundy, Sidebottom and Pendlebury.

Tactically he is obviously very astute. The way our back line have become intercept marking beasts is brilliant. Rather than panic and change things towards the chaotic method of football that has been so effective for Richmond he has stuck to his guns and developed a game style suited to our strengths. Proving just copying the previous years premiers is maybe not the best recipe for success.

The way our list has evolved has been really good. Whereas some teams have looked to elite star power, we've built a high number of very very good players. By this I mean we probably don't have a player in the top 10 of the competition (maybe JJK fully flying?), which is quite unusual for a premiership team. But - by my count - we probably have 7 in the top 40: Kennedy, McGovern, Yeo, Gaff, NicNat, Shuey, Hurn... Whichever of those you rate as our 7th best footballer (I'd go Hurn, others may differ) I can't imagine any other clubs #7 is near as good as him. We've developed a large depth of really good players (can't forget Darling, Sheppard and Redden aren't far behind those top 7 either IMO) rather than looking to draft and recruit guys who are going to be top 5 in the competition as these players are exceptionally hard to get your hands on and can't ultimately end up a fruitless search.

I know some would like to see more fire and brimstone from him but it's just not his style... And if he tried it I think it would feel forced and unnatural and probably have the opposite effect to what was intended.

All hail Simpson and may there be more cups to come.

I think from the quick search of my posts I seemed to back Simpson in but question the mentality of the squad in 2017.

I stand by that, but the squad turned that around this year, they believed, they proved everyone wrong.

The midfield is still our Achilles heel in my view, and we aren't in the top four or perhaps even top eight midfields of the competition, but we got the most out of them at the right time, and did enough with a very good to elite back line and forward line. They say midfields win games but we proved it's not necessary if you have the cattle up forward, down back and in the ruck to make up for the deficiencies.

Wouldn't surprise me if our clearance and stoppage-related numbers are amongst the worst in the AFL.

Our midfield jumped up heaps this year, partly due to certain players no longer leaving us effectively one player down on turnovers, but also I think a major, major difference was having Sam Mitchell in charge of our mids. I’m more than a little concerned about whether we can replicate our midfield performance next year when he’s gone.

Equal 10th for stoppages, 11th for clearances.

Richmond are 17th for both incidentally.

Using differential averages we are 7th for clearances an 5th for Inside 50's....

Which is probably about right for where you'd rank our midfield. Just outside the top four midfields for mine. As mentioned above we don't have the top line star power of other teams in our midfield, but we do now have a lot of really good players who can rotate through there. And as you say FP they really stood up in finals when it mattered, particularly in the GF.

On the AFL stats how does winning a stoppage differentiate from winning a clearance?

While I don't actually know, I'd assumed the stoppage stat was when your team cause a stoppage.

Differentials is definitely a better way to look at it. Thanks for that :)

Nathan van Berlo is still there, he's our stoppage coach. Sure, we were relatively crap there but obviously it did the job enough. I am confident Mitchell's influence will live on for a little while.

I think Van Berlo's influence has/will probably been bigger, Sam Mitchel has been great by many accounts but I think it'd be just general midfield craft (i.e losing your player in congestion, linking, leadership) that he'd teach. You can take a lot of that moving forward, but I think stoppages are a more strategic area seeing as you come up against something new every week

Hopefully Van Berlo picked up a lot from him. Think Mitch was an excellent teacher and not every coach can teach, no matter how many good ideas they may have. Time will tell next year I guess, but the belief is there now by the boys so let's hope they can continue this belief into the future.
