Haha wow, interesting to see that I lost the faith there for a while. Can't remember posting that at all. Such sweet humble pie.

More attention to detail from Simmo, he banned the players from wearing sunglasses in public situations

The guy has had the goods from very early on.
The only thing I think he's erred on significantly was team selection in 2017 - we should have played more youngsters.
I was a little bit worried we still hadn't developed the real top line midfield over the last few years but we've won the competition regardless. It's probably fair to say it's not the best midfield in competition, but it's close to it and bats very deep now with Yeo, Shuey, Gaff, Redden with Hutchings tagging and a host of players on the next line who can fill in. And on the biggest stage of all it was our midfield which won us the game against an opposition midfield that - on paper anyway - should have us covered. 63 inside 50's to 48 and very little impact out of Grundy, Sidebottom and Pendlebury.
Tactically he is obviously very astute. The way our back line have become intercept marking beasts is brilliant. Rather than panic and change things towards the chaotic method of football that has been so effective for Richmond he has stuck to his guns and developed a game style suited to our strengths. Proving just copying the previous years premiers is maybe not the best recipe for success.
The way our list has evolved has been really good. Whereas some teams have looked to elite star power, we've built a high number of very very good players. By this I mean we probably don't have a player in the top 10 of the competition (maybe JJK fully flying?), which is quite unusual for a premiership team. But - by my count - we probably have 7 in the top 40: Kennedy, McGovern, Yeo, Gaff, NicNat, Shuey, Hurn... Whichever of those you rate as our 7th best footballer (I'd go Hurn, others may differ) I can't imagine any other clubs #7 is near as good as him. We've developed a large depth of really good players (can't forget Darling, Sheppard and Redden aren't far behind those top 7 either IMO) rather than looking to draft and recruit guys who are going to be top 5 in the competition as these players are exceptionally hard to get your hands on and can't ultimately end up a fruitless search.
I know some would like to see more fire and brimstone from him but it's just not his style... And if he tried it I think it would feel forced and unnatural and probably have the opposite effect to what was intended.
All hail Simpson and may there be more cups to come.
Wouldn't surprise me if our clearance and stoppage-related numbers are amongst the worst in the AFL.
The midfield is still our Achilles heel in my view, and we aren't in the top four or perhaps even top eight midfields of the competition, but we got the most out of them at the right time, and did enough with a very good to elite back line and forward line. They say midfields win games but we proved it's not necessary if you have the cattle up forward, down back and in the ruck to make up for the deficiencies.

Equal 10th for stoppages, 11th for clearances.
Richmond are 17th for both incidentally.

On the AFL stats how does winning a stoppage differentiate from winning a clearance?

Our midfield jumped up heaps this year, partly due to certain players no longer leaving us effectively one player down on turnovers, but also I think a major, major difference was having Sam Mitchell in charge of our mids. I’m more than a little concerned about whether we can replicate our midfield performance next year when he’s gone.

Hopefully Van Berlo picked up a lot from him. Think Mitch was an excellent teacher and not every coach can teach, no matter how many good ideas they may have. Time will tell next year I guess, but the belief is there now by the boys so let's hope they can continue this belief into the future. Our midfield jumped up heaps this year, partly due to certain players no longer leaving us effectively one player down on turnovers, but also I think a major, major difference was having Sam Mitchell in charge of our mids.
