We brought in Hinge less than 12 months ago.
Hamill is our future. Chayce Jones is moving in there. McPherson needs to be persisted with.
Milera will be coming back and likely going back before he can prove himself.
Smith still has a few seasons left.
We've been playing one small too many each week, bring in a key defender and this further reduces available spots.
I just don't see it as a need.
Hinge I'll give you, given he's pretty much an unknown quality

None of Hamill/Jones/definitely not McPherson, are Dawson (a metres gained, zone-breaking half back). Milera especially isn't either, his future is on the wing if anything

Dawson is as much of a Smith/Seedsman replacement as you'll get moving forward, the attacking outside player that Nicks seems to like to make use of. If you've watched the Swans this year, you would've seen how he impacts their attacking ball movement

Added to that, he's young enough to fit our age profile going forward (same age as Doedee). He's a need

Dare we call Stephens a bust ??

I know many here would
I certainly wouldn't call Stephens a bust, i'd just call him a young outside mid, which is generally one of the most unfairly scrutinized positions in BF. And TBH, I don't know if Sydney are playing him to his strength. From the games i've watched it looks like he's been instructed to play as the defensive wingman (and it looks really unnatural for him).

Just checked his game logs in the 2's and he's flat out crushing it. From what I saw his averages were;

Disposals: 29.5 (55:45)
Kicks: 16
HBalls: 13.5
Clearances: 3.8
Tackles: 4
Marks: 5.2

The kid can most certainly play.

We have no business going KP early with our draft picks. It's not a need. The reason it's not a need is we've got our anchor pieces for this rebuild. Thilthorpe for the forwards. Butts for defense.

The absolute last thing we need is key defenders at this point in time. Behind Butts you've got 4 people competing for that 2nd spot, and one we've spent pick 6 on. At the moment, it's a reassess in 2022 kind of deal. Likely what happens is McAsey wins the 2nd KPD gig with an uninterrupted preseason and what I hope we do is move Worrell to the 3rd tall and Doedee to Kelly's spot. That looks like the start of a dynamic defense on paper at least.

Same deal with key forwards, though not as cut and dry. We've got Thilthorpe to build around and 3 players fighting it out to be filthy partner. The only issue is it looks like all 3 are duds at this point, meaning it's likely we'll need to refresh at some point in the future. That said a 2nd KPF isn't an important position so we can hold off. Gollant will end up the third tall, looks a McGovern clone and Cook is likely a wing/half forward prospect.

The biggest hole on our list with young talent at the moment is in the midfield. You have the start of a dangerous midfield group, but it simply needs more. A lot more even.
Whilst totally understand your feedback re going forward and agree our top priority is to get either by trade or 1st pick or 2 first draft picks need to be future elite mids unlike currently have . I think beyond that especially up forward your belief we will be covered is wish and prayer stuff ,bearing in mind unless Himmelberg ,Frampton along with McAdam suddenly show something they along with probably Tex and end of next year would not be on list , especially remembering that Fog hasn't currently got a contract for next year along with Lynch.
They are serious possibilities and then what is left.
In defence we may be ok relying a lot on Butts unless Talia has 1 or 2 years left .
Just want to see Doedee play his natural game and a low or rookie back up be handy mainly on what they decide with Borlase.
But please lets give McAsey and Worrel games NOW.
Anyway that's my thoughts.

One is a defender we have many of. The other is a winger who could be something.
You think Dawson couldn't play wing just as well as he plays half back?

Think you need to have a closer look.

For such a talented player his first half last night was absolute trash.
I turned on the game just before he kicked his first goal. I wanted to assume he teared up the game before that... I was very wrong

That said, I think he has a place in our side over someone like McAdam, and still has quite a bit of upside, too

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth, you would take Dawson in a heart beat if the price is right.
He's a great size 192cm
His numbers improve every year and 480m gained at 80% DE, 3 tackles and 5 x 1%

It would be 1 less problem for the Nicks.
i would be happy for Milera to go to HF

You misunderstand what I'm saying.

We have a glut of similar size, age and types - Crouch, Laird, Keays and Sloane seems too many of the same type.

Sure, we can discuss Matt Crouch leaving or players taking different roles. But it is also relevant for a poster to discuss Keays, considering he is arguably the lesser player and we may receive more compansation for him.

I like Keays, sure he has deficiencies but I get the impression that he has an elite work ethic and gives absolute everything from week to week.
I dont think Keays will ever be elite but every successful club has those honest footballers that are integral in setting the right example regarding standards both on and off the field.
With a few of your senior players due to depart in the coming years I wonder if someone like Keays could step up and fill the void?

If our midfield going forward has Keays as, say, our 4th or 5th option (instead of our 2nd, as he is this year)... we'll be in a very good position

I'm of the view you don't trade in a player and hope they can Excel in another position.
Well one things for sure Dawson is absolutely proven to be game breaker at AFL Level, Stephens however?

For the record I'd still be going to the draft because at a bare minimum Sydney would want our 2nd pick and possibly more sweeteners to get either of Dawson and Stephens.

There are sure to be some pretty decent midfield prospects still on the table around our 2nd pick in this midfield laden draft.....i.e. Harry Schoenberg, Deven Robertson types.

No one is saying Dawson isnt proven. Just that he's a half back. Do I think he's good? Yes.
Do I want to prioritise him over a potentially high ceiling winger? No.
Stephens hasn't been given a fair go given their long list of young mids and wingers coming through. Yet doing very well in reserves. Only second season so not talking about a three or four year stalled player.

I'm working off the proviso our second pick remains intact and the Crouch compo finds its way to Sydney given the rumours.

I agree, when I look at Keays I think of a player like Mark Bickley who wasn't the most gifted player but was integral in setting a standard that elite players like Mark Riccuito, Andrew McLeod and the team followed.
Adelaide have a young list coming through which need guidance from the right type of players/people.
Gold Coast are a prime example of what occurs when elite talent is not driven/supported by the right leaders.

It's got me ****ed why we won't try Hamill on a wing. We're using our two quickest players as lockdown defenders, while we lack speed further up the ground.

Keays is still pretty underrated on this board. He compares pretty well with some of the similar aged GWS mids who were taken in the top ten.

His kicking might not be the best, but I'd go as far to argue he's most underrated here on Crows BF than he is league-wide

I think we're over-analysing him. He's not a first-class mid, but he's great at what he does

Amen, Mutineer

I wouldn't give anything into the 1st round for Dawson whatsoever (I'd give up our 2nd plus slight pick upgrades, but nothing more), but to say he's worth less to us than Stephens seems crazy to me

That said, if we don't get Dawson I wouldn't be too upset, for the reasons you say. Gives us a greater chance at hitting on an an elite mid in this mid-heavy draft

I think we're in an interesting spot with our list.

Some tough decisions are going to have to be made at the end of the year because most of the players who potentially are in the gun to be delisted are rookie listed.

Stengle (delist)
Davis (Rookie)
Mackay (Rookie)
Gibbs (Rookie)
Seeds will get another deal
Strachan (Rookie)
Murray (Rookie)
There's been big raps on Gollant so he will most probably get another deal
O'Connor is a potential delistee

That leaves Crouch, Talia, Lynch, Kelly and some tough decisions ahead for the club.

You can add Parnell to that rookie list too. Conversely, Stengle is already completely gone (unlike Gibbs, who continues to occupy a position on the list).

Seed has a contract for next year. Hit his triggers about a month ago.

I still can't get a read on Kelly

I would've thought he would be the type to commit by now. Is he looking to go back to Vic?
I've got a feeling that Kelly thinks he'll be showered with offers later in the season after other uncontracted players get signed up and the pool shrinks

And I have the exact opposite feel, I think he wants to be at the Crows and is waiting on the Crows.
