"you need a great ruck to win a premiership"

And yet the best rucks have won f*** all, and premiership sides have included absolutely forgettable rucks.

I would have thought the argument is clear.
Clarke keating was in no way forgettable. He was perfect as a ruck..tough as nails, no frills and loved belting the ball to advantage. The sock down mouth guard hanging half out look at the first bounce was always a sign he meant business. Super player and important in that brisbane side

Can you point out where someone has made the claim you need a great ruck to win a flag.

You said this morning it was the least important position on the ground. Nothing that’s been posted supports that.

A great ruck still needs a quality side to win a flag, just like a quality defence and midfield need a quality forward line, just look at our 05/06 sides. A ruck is just one cog but it’s laughable that their value is downplayed because their sides haven’t won and ignoring the weaknesses of the sides they played in.

Compare ROB to the great Shaun Rehn and the stats comparison looks much the same and in ROB’s favour. However, two points: the game is now much more congested with more ball ups favouring many more hit outs. Rehn and Clarke genuinely shared the rucking duties with another ruckman whereas ROB largely goes it alone.

Clarke was an elite tap ruckman to advantage and would have very high direct score involvements, however that was about all he did.

Where ROB is as weak as pee is as a midfielder. He just doesn’t have the disposal skills but foot and particularly hand to be a linking player in a chain of rapid ball movement.

And yet was one of the best kicks under pressure in the league in 2021.

He's not damaging, but his kicking is rather underrated on this board because of how horrible it looks.

I would think the idea that a mediocre ruck can absolutely be part of a premiership side has been clearly proven.

I don't think there's any evidence that an elite ruck is even remotely necessary to being a successful side.

The best small forward in Eddie and even Charlie haven’t won flags so there’s evidence an elite small forward isn’t needed and mediocre small forwards like Richmond’s is all you need based on that argument.

Im also sure there have been elite mids, Key position players, flankers who haven’t won flags but mediocre ones have.

Quality of coaching and game plan, plus injuries also need to be taken into account.

Ruck is easy to isolate because there’s one maybe 2 playing in a side per game so it’s easy to come up with biased analysis.

I watched a fair bit of Strachen, I think some people on here are over rating him a bit. He held his own against the good rucks but was far from dominating the SANFL and was beaten on occasions. He is a good AFL backup Ruckman but O'Brien is way ahead of him.

I think it's fairly simple, if we get a decent offer (3rd round or above which is unlikely) for him we trade him and recruit another mature age ruckman otherwise he is more valuable as a backup.

Bringing in Parker to this club would be one of the dumbest decisions this club has ever done and there’s been some horrific ones.
I want to see Hately, Pedlar, Schoenberg, Berry, Laird and Keays. Hopefully Scholl and Stephen’s or Cook on the wings. Throw in a one of the best midfielders at pick 4 and this midfield will awesome in a couple of years

Two types of rucks ....one's that nuetralize a ruck contest, and one's that win taps

The importance of Rucks is more evident now, given the introduction of the 6 x 6 x 6 setup

You can have the best midfield, but if you don't know where the ball's going, can't be as effective .....ala Bulldogs AP

Not underrated .....it was horrible this year ....ROB kicked the ball, generally under pressure, and without any thought or plan on where he was kicking it .....just terrible & impossible for players in front of him to read

I’m not sure what your point is. Teams with medicore/makeshift forward lines have won premierships too. You could uncharitably call Geelong’s forward line that, back in their golden era.

Yes, you can win a flag without a Shaun Rehn or a Dean Cox. But would you want one if you could have one?

You bet your ****ing life you would.

Lets hope he chooses Gold Coast for five years on $700 000!
We all saw how this book was read last year. If we have offered 2 - you bet a side will come in offer 4 at $550K and we will be lucky to get a 3rd round compo pick for what was our best pure mid - a previous all Australian mid. Oh and its not like he is 30 years of age - he is still mid 20's.

If that happens, it just makes us look like a total laughing stock

The Crouch deal news report from Fox is pretty ordinary.
Tom Morris' report includes the following; "I think he’s probably insulted...." hardly conclusive is it?
What he is really saying is:
"I think" - I don't know anything, I'm making it up.
"probably" - he might be, he might not. I clearly know nothing, so I will sit on the fence here.

I'm a bit sick of reporters making up their own bullshit and then using it as evidence to criticise us.

It will take a few years, and we need to be patient.

the majority of journo's these days use words like probably/possible/he may, and alike as it covers their @rse if it's incorrect.

it's saying things without really saying things

the whole lot are useless and probably write an article to meet the KPI's

as proven earlier this week, whilst it's nice to get excited about some rumours, they're not factual until one of the 2 parties involved makes an official announcement

Exactly. Now, has there ever been a premiership side with a forgettable midfield?
Well we had Jarman (A Grader), Rehn (A Grader) Bickey and kids Johnson, Goodwin and McLeod who were 21 at the time. We also had in the team Rintoul, Keating, Ellen (played once in a life time game) who were really barely SANFL standard. Have no idea how we managed it in 1997/98 but we did and we did it with 3 A Graders Jarman, Rehn and Hart. A handful of talented kids. And the rest were honest triers.

You're forgetting ....."I believe"

Morris knows Crouch looking for longterm deal ....Morris knows Crouch has been offered 2 years ...
1 + 1 = insulted

Gary Buckenara has a few good points in his article on what we should do over the trade/draft season.
In general he puts the team into A - 3 players, B - 8 players and C grades - 12 players, along with and future AB graders - 9 players and "Need more time" players - 13 players.
He's pretty accurate, although I think he is tough on Seedsman (C) and Keays (B) and generous with Sloane (A), Kelly (B) and Himmelberg (B). The other development categories are pretty much as you would expect.

A key part of his article is that we need to target only A or B players into the side and suggests we make a "why not?" play for Adam Cerra.

Cerra wants to be home around friends and family, his manager and Freo football boss Peter Bell made that quite clear, he'll get all the money he wants in Victoria.

"I think Tom Morris probably has a foot fetish".

Plausible deniability if I'm wrong though. And don't ask me to give up my sources, they need to be kept anonymous.
