You left out Trengove, Hogan Watts, Toumpas, Gysberts, Tapscott.

It's not like a magic formula where you get some early picks then move up. And it might take more than 4 early picks to get 4 elite mids
Actually there is. Get competent people and get the off field sorted. Look at Balmes influence at clubs.
Go look at when Melbourne changed their list manager. Look at who they have brought to the club in recent years.
Go have a look at what happened to Brisbane when Fagan arrived.
Buckenara became recruiting manager at Hawthorn in 2004

Avoid the definition of insanity by doing the same thing over and over a gain.

If there's no magic formula there is a disaster formula like appointing Mark Neeld coach, Burton head of performance, Carlton sacking coaches every 3 years while board is in turmoil etc etc etc.

Ah, so Buckenara was the one who drafted Beau Dowler and Mutch Thorp with consecutive pick 6s.

you got to love one who avoids the mass of evidence to spot the outliner, considering he took Ellis 1st who was ruined with injuries, over a long period of time who takes Birchall, Kennedy, Rioli, Shoemakers, Shiel, Smith, Hill, and recruits Burgoyne, Frawley, Lake, Hale, Gunston, Gibson, Dew etc and they only end up with 4 flags.

Did you notice the conversation was about building midsfields 1st and the only 2 you mention werent midfielders.
So pick the faults with Fagan and Brisbane going McCluggage, Berry, Witherden, Rayner, Bailey, Starcevich, suppose thats luck

No-ones going to bat 100% but its pretty bloody obvious their are poor recruiters or list managers or both and the teams that went down certain paths prioritising midfields have generally done better if they have a good development team and process

The point was just that you only focused on the hits, when almost every team has a large number of misses.
It's not a matter of:
Get early picks
Pick some midfielders
Profit

Whole bunch of random stuff happens.

People look back at what has happened, and weave a narrative through it which makes it seem inevitable that success occurred.

It's like people who predict economic events after they happen.

Was his defending any worse than Brodie Smith?

Averaged more tackles in 2018 than Jake Kelly did this year. Similar contested possession ratio as well. I've a,ways thought the knock on Milera's defensive aspect to be off the mark. His speed makes him very effective as a starting point.

Same draft narrows it down
It does. Future trading is a gamble. I'm talking making a specific move to turn one pick into two known picks.

As far as I can tell it's always spoken about but basically never happens. Clubs just don't trade top picks to move down the order.

The last time it happened was Brisbane trading pick 2 for pick 3 and 16. They only moved down a single spot.

You could also count Fremantle trading pick 6 for 11, 23 and 30. They lost that deal as pick 6 ended up as Ben King. However they ended up using 11 on a trade, got pick 6 back and also traded that

Bit weird, would have thought he still a had significant contribution to make to a senior squad. Was he mulling over being a Godden replacement?

2016 Port give
Pick 9
Pick 19
Pick 49

To Sydney for
Pick 14
Pick 17
Pick 31

One of the few times picks were traded in the same draft, and then all picks not on traded

Port got Todd Marshall, Sam Powell-Pepper, Willem Drew

Sydney took Oliver Florent, Will Haywood, Darcy Cameron

**** knows who the winner was...

Melbourne don’t win that game last night without Oliver and Petracca.

We are doing the right thing with our rebuild. It’s the only way to go in modern footy.

Ahmm, Oliver and Petracca are midfielders.

We have used our last 3 top 10 picks on a KPF, KPD and a HBF.

So when you say we are doing the right thing with our rebuild did you mean us deciding to bite the bullet and commit to a rebuild?

Because we havent used our top picks on elite midfield talent despite it being our biggest weakness.

2018 Pick 9 Chayce Jones
2019 Pick 6 Fischer McAsey
2020 Pick 2 Riley Thilthorpe

Rookie list, but will play mostly VFL it seems

Similar to Goldsack this year
Well that means we get nothing for him, as the only way they can put him on their rookie list is to draft him in the RD, or later during the PSSP. Either way, they're not signing him as a FA, and we're not getting any compensation.

I don't have a problem with that. The club chose not to offer him a new contract, so they shouldn't be receiving compensation for a player they didn't want at the club.

Actually I disagree to a point
We are yet to use a very high pick on a mid.
We went TT and McAsey with our very highest picks Compared to WB, Melbourne going for mids in Oliver Petracca Brayshaw, Bont Macrae with top 5 picks

I was more talking quality player over position but agree - we need to go after mids now.

Not for a lack of trying, seeing Jones was drafted as a midfielder, and Pedlar (pick 10, but also worth mentioning as it and pick 9 are splitting hairs) also had been.

Milera is also solid overhead when his shoulder was OK too.

He can play... when fit.
