Can't recall anything on Murphy but you could be right. Played for a few other clubs too I think.

All I remember about Wigney is him waving the football in his opponents face like he was Wayne Carey before kicking a Joe the Goose goal from 1 metre out. Copped a spray from whoever the coach was then, so probably makes the list for being a douchebag.

Na, that was Barry Standfield in 1997 at Waverly Park.

It was Blighty and never played fir the club again. Retired mid season with a foot fracture.

OK sorry Stuey if he's listening. How quickly we forget all these legendary megastars.

And Ryan Fitzgerald was pretty funny - just couldn't play...

Disagree with this.

Ryan Fitzgerald could play the game but his body wasn't durable and broke down far too easy. Knee and shoulders were paper thin and If it stood up, he could have been a superstar player.

All sorts of categories could come up in a thread like this:
How about "Dud Rucks"?

Alan Bartlet
Randall Bone
James Craig
Brett Chalmers
Ryan Fitzgerald
Mathew Golding
Aaron Keating (although he was a premiership player!!)
Shaun McKernon
John Meeson
Romano Negri
Fergus Watts
Will Young

Fair call - should have classified him as "couldn't get on the Park"

I thought that was Barry Standfield

and Ian Downsborough owns this thread, looked a million bucks, played like .38 cents

This squad needs James Begley. He was made for this squad, he even used to play for St.Kilda which makes it even more hilarious.

Hodges had plenty of chances.

He played well but a guy named Modra in 1993 played better in Hodges position and on team balance Hodges didn't fit. He walked in 94 because he wasn't enjoying his footy. Back then the culture of SANFL footy was against the AFL and probably never felt at home in at the crows because of the port debacle that happened at the same time. The only player from port that seemed to excel was Tregenza and Brown to an extent. Hodges had a great year in 1992. You don't kick 11 goals in a game against a team playing off in the GF if your no good. Im not sure how much Hodges wanted an AFL career anyhow. If he truly wanted one he would have moved interstate after 93. You only have to listen to his ex crows team mates though to know they held him in the highest regard and thought him to be a brilliant player. I don't think he got along with the Glenelg boys club too much though. I do remember him stating once he was never invited to Jameson's 21st and always felt on the outer.

Side thought though......The guy was one of the best set shot kicks at goal SA has ever seen. If anyone knows how to have a good goal kicking routine especially under pressure he is certainly near the top. Goal kicking coach? Only have to ask Norwood supporters about what they thought of his goal kicking expertise after the 96 prelim. ;)

Murphy was a villain. Didn't he get suspended fir like 5 weeks for punching a western bulldogs (or Richmond) player and after that 1993 finals series, Wigney was a coodabeen champion that turned into a never was after going to Richmond.

Michael Murphy could play was good for the Bays in the 80s, had great hands and managed to kick some decent bags when he actually played for the Crows in the early days, kicked a couple of big bags for the Bears in '93 as well. Him and Cornsey had a few bust ups according to McDermott that's one of the reasons he got the flick at the end of '92, the other as suggested was that his true calling was probably as a prize fighter, he in no way was an out an out 'Villain' he was just one of the greatest toe to toe fighters the game has seen, his suspension you mention was against Melbourne and was single handedly the greatest right hook the game has ever seen

(It's at the 5:09 mark, it's a beauty)

To be fair to Wigney when he moved in 1995 to Richmond he played in defence and had good season in which they made a prelim, at Adelaide he was the most slowest, least talented, unfit individual to play finals football for us (Keating included) he fluked some real easy goals in the final against hawthorn then we played a man down for the rest of the finals series by including him. His chase efforts in the forward line still make for some of the funniest viewing.

My "Misfits" Team

F: Wigney - Hodges - *Watts

HF: Gill - Standfield - *Gunston

C: L.Stevens - Saliba - M.Cook

HB: D.Gallagher - Ross - Picioane

B: Massie - Chalmers - Bown

R: Downsborough - Stenglein - Jericho (c)

I/C : Keating, Sellar, Rintoul, D.Brown - where he always has to start, on the bench

Emg: Matthew Smith - still pushing for that dream debut
.........Lawrence Angwin - (N/A) - Either currently breaking into a teammates house or just has the munchies
.........Dean Howard - this guy played for us, yep, believe it or not.

Out: Tippett (Susp./Concussion)

*Require Parent permission slips

Just missed out: Meesen, Jacky, Collins+Williams - they were the same player right?, McCartney, Ingerson, Herbert, Atkinson, Campbell, Byrne, Richardson, Hewitt, Nelson, Shell, Shir.

Went lenient on Bock & Davis due to the $$$$ factor.

He had more than a decent crack at it before Modra's arrival. Even in 1991, Rod Jameson emerged as a better option (and a better kick) than Hodges. For whatever reason, Hodges didn't handle what was thrown at him at AFL level. You can come up with all the excuses in the world for why he didn't perform (and Port supporters love to - didn't get along with the coach, didn't get along with his teammates, he felt left-out, heart wasn't it....boo ****ing hoo)....At the end of the day, the book shows he was, at best, an average AFL player.

He was an extraordinary player at SANFL level. No two ways about that.

Thank goodness somebody had Jonathon Ross in the team. You can't drunkenly steal the team bus and then when pulled over by the cops, pull your watch over your clenched fist and challenge a few coppers to a fight without demanding selection in a misfits team. For the youngsters here just think of an alcoholic Jeremy Cameron with a lot of issues and that was Rossy. Could have been anything that kid but he would have earnt his spot in the starting 18 of an AA misfit team with his behaviour.

Anyone remember watching the 98 GF thinking this bloke would be a star??

Must admit I did. But did he ever steal the team bus? More of a goody two shoes than a villain I would have thought.

I reckon there was a game vs sydney like he was going to be a star.

Keating and marsh. Do we need this type of player to win a flag now? ?

Keating no. Never though he would be a star or even a good player.

Marsh on the other hand, he gave Paul Roos the run around on debut and kicked 3 or 4 and looked like he could be anything. Then he did his knee and all was lost.

Agreed on relative talent.
But I was more thinking about blights deliberate strategy to play them.

Didn't blight give everyone a go and if they played well, they stayed in the side?

IIRC - Blight also needed 2 ruckman for his strategy to work and with Pitman playing at CHB on Lowe, Blighty needed Keating to play. That's the only reason, as far as I can remember.

1998 he gave up on Keating and went with Marsh in the same sort of role and Marsh played forward a bit with Mods going down.
