This is a great thread. 10+ years of glory and pain.
what is the holdup with re-signing Jarryd Lyons. Surely he has shown the loyalty, grit and determination that we need at the Crows. He has shown his ability this Year and hopefully is signed before the finals.

Intrigued as to where Cheney and Dear are at.

I have been wondering this myself, especially Cheney who really seemed to consolidate his spot this year. With Otten looking like he probably won't get back to his level pre-injuries and Shaw's future in doubt from his concussions, there aren't too many others on our list competing for this spot, are there?

so, 9 games for Henderson this year and then we cut him loose.

at least thats only half as bad as Wright's 16 games last year. As a club that seems to put an incredible amount of value in experience over form, talent, ability or anything else (see Thommo, Douglas, Mackay) I find our ability to waste games on people absolutely astonishing.

our selectors are an embarrassment.

They just prioritise winning games ahead of development.. as would most clubs in our situation. Might be different if we were heading for a finish down the bottom of the ladder, but that was never on the cards in 2015 or 2016.

in fairness to them Henderson only played because Hampton, Seedman and to a lesser extent Shaw were injured, but development is always important and should always be prioritised.

despite his (somewhat overrated) structural importance McGovern for example was played largely for the sake of his own development, and that's good, but we need to get in the habit of doing it more often. We may not be heading towards the bottom of the ladder but we won't be heading any closer to the top either if we don't get some new players up to speed (as has been all but proven by us over the last 8 or 9 years).

So it appears the Crows are persevering with Sam Shaw a bit longer ......just shows the esteem he is held in ......super talent :D
He's already contracted for 2017. Any retirement decision this year was always going to be Shaw's alone, on the basis of medical advice.

We had quite a few "development" selections this year - most notably McGovern & Milera.

I'd expect to see more of Knight & Milera next year, and possibly (hopefully) our new #13 draftee. All of these could still be regarded as "development" selections.

Like Bartels sole decision after triggering the extra year in his contract ;) .......of course it's the players decision

I was thrilled to see McGovern and Milera to get the games they did but they were really the only two aside from ROB's two token games.

we really don't do enough in this regard, understandable Milera was never realistically going to play an entire season in his first year but he easily could have made a reappearance later in the year. Knight also was fit and in form late but was ignored, despite showing he has some grit in last years elimination final. Jacobs clearly wasn't right when he came back and ROB could have kept his spot warm - I certainly doubt he could have done any worse. Similarly CEY in his two games didn't look lost and Wigg was solid for much of the year in the SANFL. Do you want to tell me that we couldn't have afforded to play either of them, even if it was only to give Thommo or Douglas a spell which they both desperately needed?

none of these guys except McGovern have much to build on heading into next season. Plenty of big opportunities gone begging in my opinion.
