I checked out this new patch, the training modes, markers up, and it looked like ultimate team is still missing. Not sure why Xbox users are dying for this mess of a game, the gameplay is terrible and it's still missing the modes they advertised before launch.

It’s almost as if…..the game wasn’t ready by May 4th and they’ve been taking everyone on a ride since….making it all up as they go and still not being able to rectify all the issues since then! Topping it off with ghosting their customers too

I picked this game up from Cash Converters on the PS5 after initially staying away at the start. I confess I'm a sports game nut and will give anything a go. Want to give a perspective as someone who skipped all the bugs/BigAnt tomfoolery from launch.

The game is not perfect, and definitely no better than Evo2 or previous games from a game play perspective, but I'm not finding it that bad. I'm having some fun playing a season through with St Kilda. I definitely haven't fully got the hang of it yet so winning and losing the odd game but it's not unplayable. I really wish they spent more time on the contested part of the game - the idea of raising your arms to get a handball out is actually really good but then you ping a handball 20m away which isn't realistic. I'd love to see in close, tight handballing replicated somehow. Player movement is okay but needs to be more fluid.

The presentation and graphics are a huge step up - you can tell they've spent a lot of times like the cut scenes/coin toss and so forth. I would be happier if they prioritised gameplay over those but it does make it prettier and probably easier to market.

The issue is that we keep changing developers with these games. Even considering how shit the launch was, these games would benefit from someone like Big Ant building and building on the same game akin to a 2K or FIFA type game. If you have to start from scratch every time it'll never improve. Makes me wonder if a Konami eFootball type approach may be better as I think continuous development will help here.

They had a better base game with Live 2011. I'm thinking their custom engine probably is a nightmare to program for, they should have just done what WW did for Evo 2 and used a industry standard engine with Unreal Engine 4, which is what eFootball also uses.

Quick handballs in tight are possible as you get used to the game, it can be a bit clunky but you’ll learn to do it.

My honest take is that right now after all the patches and post-launch, the game is the best AFL game in terms of Art designs, Graphics presentation, Audio+commentary, it's the closest we've gotten to a Fifa/NBA2K edition of an AFL game. The gameplay is good in some areas and lacking in other areas. So kicking for goal segment is good and well crafted, it's enjoyable to kick for goal after a grab and aiming for goal with wind direction and kicking bar graphic.

For me, i think you are tackled too easily, So finding any space can be difficult, but if you're quick on the button you can handball out before it's 'Holding the Ball'. I use ball-trail, and highly recommend it when playing. The gameplay is good but not great, it needs more fine-tuning. For instance marking feels a bit basic, like there could be 2 more animation variants that make it feel more dynamic. Handball has improved a heap, it's really good now, short, sharp kicks are satisfying, which is basically, "Get ball, quick fire kick, point in direction of player, do that fast', lol. Is fun. The game for me, is going for a Fifa style feel of end-to-end classic style football, simple mechanics, which i enjoy, but it's not quite as dynamic and fluid as i want, yet. It's still ok/good.

The five main problems i have with the game are this:

1. Marking animations seem too basic, but there is a specky function. (overall, fairly basic) [my suggestion: perhaps adding a chest-mark animation, and a forward jumping grab that has the player jump and mark on the lead.]
2. Tackling is 1-1 every time, there are no group tackles, so it's quite repetitive.(un-dynamic) [my suggestion: just a few more variations of random tackle animations that give it a more dynamic feel].
3. No sliders yet. So you can't really change the gameplay dynamics, like you can in 2K and Evolution 2.[ Again this can just be the main skills, a simple list of things like, tackles, marking, running, kicking, handballs, injuries, tapping, leading, etc].
4. Players and umpires feel a bit floaty, sometimes, like they are moonwalking instead of walking on flat ground.(Mainly in the forward 50 areas).
5. Sometimes a kick animation goes really fast, like it's in teleportation mode. Just something small that could be ironed out and slowed down.

Lastly, as i said, the gameplay could do with some more testing and fine-tuning to get it feeling really well balanced. Like when you take the car in for a service, but i'm not sure why this has taken so long to achieve. I would prioritise this over Legends' mode, career modes, etc

Is it worth buying for Xbox users?? Absolutely, just to check out a modern AFL game, but i am patient in terms of it being improved and updated over time, so it depends on your own wants and expectations as well.

Nothing annoys me more when your having a close exciting game, the AI masks it either just outside of 50 or just after the siren outside 50 and they never have a shot at goal.

After the siren they kick to a player and it just ruins the whole experience/excitement cause you know they aren’t shooting

The presentation isn't as amazing as people are claiming, the graphics are dated compared to triple A titles, fans picked up on this on social media, not sure why people are claiming it's what wowed people, check Facebook, it's the opposite. The commentary is poor, it's very repetitive. The AFL branding is why people wanted this. Certainly wasn't worth the effort and budget, the game needed its gameplay to be top priority.

For gameplay, you still can't turn properly, the players move into positions you're not commanding, players stutter, and you will have to fight the controls to pass the ball. There's no real reason to hand ball, it's mostly 1v1 marking contests where players glue wrestle with each other, and all you need to do is time the Y button with vibration to mark. You're right about the lack of contested play, all it is pinned tackles and randomly some slipped out passing, same with those rocket kicks, there's no gravity and weight to the game. There's no custom formations or quick commands in the game, I think that was on purpose to hide how broken the game is. If you had flooded areas, it would be nothing but pinned tackles. That's why BA have it unrealistically as players all spread out, and you can't change that. In Evo 2, players could flood, and tackles could be evaded.

Definitely worth a skip, at least wait for a sequel if they can actually fix those fundamental issues and also make the game more advanced, it's too bare bones and unfinished. You're better off going back to Evo 2 if you want something that at least functions. And they falsely advertised at launch that there would be modes that are still missing, like training, markers up, ultimate team, etc.

I’ve always found it strange that snap kicks like this are even a modifier at all, you should really just have the kick for goal button and your player automatically snaps or kicks a drop punt depending on their position/angle.

Yeah maybe...but then, what would determine if you preferred foot snap vs non-preferred foot banana?
Or the other way around (more likely)... you could opposite foot snap, or the player could preferred-foot banana.

Hello all I’ve been watching this forum for a long time now and decided to make an account now that I have the game on Xbox (some will say my biggest mistake lol). Honestly though I just played 3 play now games, while there are a ton of flaws this is by far the best AFL game (gameplay wise) in my opinion. Here are some notes I took of the positives and negatives:

Positives

• The uncontested side of the game is extremely fun when you get a roll on, the animations look smooth and the space created while moving the ball quickly is great
• The way key forwards have a high tendency to lead and outmark all the other players is a really good touch
• The ruck work looks far better than the evo games
• The goal kicking is AMAZING! By far the best part of the game
• The handballing I feel can be both a negative and a positive, but I feel the charge up feature on them is an improvement from the evo games, rather than just a standard and a lob
• Stadium design is awesome, played at Marvel and it actually felt like I was there, it just had that vibe lol. Played at the G and Giants stadium as well they also both look great
• Custscenes are clean, menu is clean looks really good and ui is passable

Negatives

• The contested game really just ruins a lot of the fun. It feels like whenever you get your hands on the footy, the game will simulate in advance and there’s no real way you can get the ball out in a lot of stoppage situations, the tackling is extremely frustrating as it feels like a locked animation, I haven’t been able to break away or get a handball/kick off like in the real sport (could just be me being a ****wit tho)
• The crowd screams ball every time a tackled is laid, gets very annoying
• Love Huddo but they somehow managed to make him painful to listen to with him repeating the same 6 lines the whole game
• Players still teleporting and sometimes when a player I’m controlling has the ball and is sprinting, manages to be sprinting backwards and the animation is locked and sort of bugs out?
• Somehow it’s better to just kick and mark from d50 to the forward line, marking seems overpowered (could just be me playing on a low difficulty)
• Stuck in the mud is a thing, especially in contested moments. Animation lock and easily tackled which is a bummer even though I’m mashing the **** out of my controller

Overall I’m in the position where I want to learn more and improve my skills in this game as the positives just outweigh the negatives (especially as I’m an AFL fanatic). Let’s hope that they keep on improving the game and can iron out a lot the gameplay bugs and add some new features. Be easy on them though guys, they’ve only had 6 months to do this. A lot of this shit has already been said I know, but I thought I’d give you all my thoughts from a new player on the Xbox.

I agree, Huddo was extremely annoying for me, they have to make him not talk too much as currently it there is hardly any silence. Commentary in the women’s game is much better with Jason Bennett

A couple of bugs have been introduced, most noticeably using the stick to move the white cross now selects different kick options only. Bit of a howler that needs to be rectified stat*. This major problem aside it's feeling like another baby step in the right direction.

What controller are you using?
I'm using a PS5 controller connected to the PC over Bluetooh, and have no issues with it. Wondering if there's some weird mapping that you're experiencing?
Does the D-Pad change the set shot cross, or do both it and the stick only change the shot type?

BA have clearly stated there were no gameplay changes in the patch.

6 months of 'baby steps' and still being far off from a real functioning product is a monumental disaster. I noticed in Twistie's latest 23 upload the CPU players were standing still doing absolutely nothing when there was an aerial ball to won, and he was getting the 'stuck in the mud' thing when he was trying to move asap, the game won't let you at times, whereas Live 2011 you could move whenever you wanted. Not sure why they're still having issues with movement, when other AFL games at least got that basic mechanic right.
