RICHMOND v PORT ADELAIDE
WHERE & WHEN: Telstra Dome, 2.10pm AEST, Sunday 1 May, Channel Nine, ABC News Radio, Triple M, 5AA
HEAD TO HEAD: Richmond 2, Port Adelaide 8
LAST TIME: Port Adelaide 19.14 (128) d Richmond 7.8 (50), Round 9, 2004 at AAMI Stadium.
THE MEDICAL ROOM: Richmond will continue to miss the presence of captain Kane Johnson who is at least another week away from resuming from a heel injury and Chris Hyde will be out for two to three weeks with a fractured skull. Brent Hartigan is also at least a week away from recovering from a hamstring injury. The two most significant absentees for the Power will be dashing defender Chad Cornes who continues to recover from a fractured tibia and Shaun Burgoyne will miss another two weeks with knee ligament damage.
THE STORY SO FAR: The Tigers sit comfortably in the top eight but doubt lingers over their credentials with their three wins coming over sides below them on the ladder. "Hangover" is a dirty word down at Alberton but there is no doubting the Power are struggling in the early stages of their premiership defence. Port is 13th on the ladder with its only win of the season a slender two-point margin over last-placed Brisbane.
THE WHITEBOARD: Confidence was growing down at Punt Road as Richmond put three wins together before the Saints handed out a harsh wake-up call last weekend. This clash should offer an intriguing insight into the mental state of the Tigers and Terry Wallace's ability to coax the best out of his young charges. Port's much-vaunted attack has averaged a mere 77 points per game so far this year while its once-reliable defence is leaking at the rate of 99 points a match. However, the real key to the Power's woes is more likely a midfield that has appeared sluggish at times and has missed the presence of the suspended Dean Brogan, while Matthew Primus and Brendon Lade struggle to regain touch.
THE VERDICT: Richmond was outclassed by St Kilda last week but is a different unit under Terry Wallace this year. The Tigers will want to hit back hard this Sunday and win it for Matthew Richardson who plays his 200th game for the club. Port Adelaide's players are hurting after an indifferent start to the season. Talk of a premiership hangover as well as last week's heart-breaking loss to Geelong may well sting them into action this week. The return of Byron Pickett after serving a six-match suspension will add some steel to the Power line-up and further enhance their chances of victory. This week, the sleeping giant awakes. Port Adelaide by 27 points
