A radical 24-page proposal to “reclaim the history’’ of the AFL is being presented to club presidents today and looks set to be accepted by the AFL Commission.

The landmark proposal calls for premierships won between 1870 and 1896 to be officially recognised and player records during the “foundation years’’ to be included in the official history of the game.

Since 1897, Essendon and Carlton have won the most VFL/AFL premierships with 16 and Collingwood is second with 15.

Including the foundation premierships, from 1870, would alter the flags leaderboard, putting Carlton on top with 22, followed by Essendon on 20, Geelong 16, Collingwood 16 and Melbourne 15.

The number of South Melbourne/Sydney premierships would double to 10.

If they want to do it, so be it, but I’d probably rather they sort out the rules, administration, umpiring, MRP and about fifty other issues before we get bent out of shape over the 1878 Premiers not getting their proper due.

Make it happen AFL

HS Logic at its best.

South Melbourne Football Club/Sydney Swans - founded 1874, won VFA flags in 1881, 1885, 1888, 1889, 1890, which the HS state would double their tally to 10, from 5 AFL/VFL
Footscray Football Club/Western Bulldogs - founded 1877 - won VFA flags in 1898, 1899, 1900, 1908, 1913, 1919, 1920, 1923, 1924 - yet by the HS logic that remains at two? Someone cant count. That makes it 11 flags, not 2.

So if they're going to include the Swans tally, logic states you include all VFA club flags won in that period from 1888-1925

Including 19th century colonial flags in the official records simply makes those official VFL records even more pointless than they already were. We've won four AFL flags, only the Hawks can boast better than that no matter how far back in time you want to go

It's not reclaiming AFL/VFL history though. Those premierships added are from the VFA. A seperate league that the foundation clubs broke away from to form the VFL. If premierships are added from that league Port have a fair right to claim their 36 premierships from the SANFL should also be included in the tally.

The concept is flawed. It should remain separated by the number of flags won in their respective competitions. AFL, VLF, VFA, SANFL etc.

Probably because in 1897 the VFL was considered the premier competition, and the VFA its underling.

The 6 founding VFL teams seceded from the VFA, then inviting St Kilda and Carlton to join, so that doesnt back the argument that the VFA was the underling. The argument among the power brokers of the league in 1887 resulted in the breakaway formation of the VFL
