Channel Seven launched its 2020 network upfronts for advertisers tonight. One of the announcements was that "dynamic" scheduling will be introduced during the last 4 rounds of the 2020 AFL season.

This will allow Seven in consultation with the league to swap their Friday or Saturday night primetime game with another game from the same round. This will avoid inconsequential and low-rating Friday night games like Melbourne v Sydney this year in the lead up to the finals. Under the new system, Seven would be able to switch one of the other matches from any of the Saturday slots.

Where did you get the last 4 rounds part?

Dynamic scheduling make organising travel from interstate awfully difficult

I could wear the last month or even 6 weeks of the season if that is what it ends up being - but particularly for teams (and supporters) who travel every second week - having some certainty is important so that bookings can be made.

I'd hate to be booked in to a Saturday night WC game with a flight home Sunday arvo - only to find out the game has been switched to 2pm Sunday

Terrible idea. There are people who arrange to travel to see a game as part of a short break and this will impact those plans. It is another example of the AFL compromising the live football attendee to provide a broadcast client with a greater revenue stream through advertising. Would also throw the games on FTA vs pay for each club. The corporatisation of Australia Rules Football is almost complete.

Basically its a good way to screw the non-Victorian teams as they are the ones that travel the most. In 2020, expect Eagles, GWS and Lions to be screwed.

Eagles play a home game on Sunday late arvo, then follow up with a Friday night game at the G.

Non-Vic teams needs the 7 day breaks more so than any Victorian teams. Not sure why Clubs would agree to this.

People constantly complain when we get a boring game on Fri / Sat night between non finals teams, and lots of them don't even bother to watch. Now fans get to see the best games in the best time slots, but yes... Let's pretend the fans are getting screwed by getting the games they want in the tine slot they want And on free to air...

5 day breaks not a concern, say Sun PM game in Perth, next game in Brisbane Fri PM. The problem is you do not need to worry.

Can you explain how having a game moved from Saturday afternoon to Saturday night will derail a team's season?

Once off is fine. Im talking about it regularly happening to the same team. Or one NonVic team being screwed regularly.

Of course it will hardly make a difference to Vic teams, but to Non-Vc teams that travel interstate every second week, coming off 5,6 or 7 day break makes a difference, what happens if there is situation where the breaks like back to back 6 day breaks? For a team that has to travel twice in a row?

In youre above scenario, Sat arvo to evening is fine but what about those nonVic teams that travel in and then have to fly out and sleep in the plane and have their entire body clock thrown out of whack.

One way C7 can negate backlash is they themselves are proactive and give Clubs a bigger headsup of what to expect.

I bet the biggest issue for the Vic Clubs will be is that the players get to sleep in longer. Thats it.

All these games will likely be at the Dome or the G.

It can only happen in the last 4 weeks and you need to be playing Saturday afternoon and you need to be playing against a top 8 opponent and the games already on Saturday night has to be a fizzer for your game to be effected... So let's not pretend this is going to happen regularly.

I highly doubt the AFL is going to give teams 5 days breaks, in fact I think it's against the rules of the agreement between the players and the AFL so they can't even if they wanted to, your fears are ridiculously over the top and unfounded. What's going to happen is maybe 1 or 2 games a year (probably between 2 VIC teams) will be moved from 2pm start to 7pm start...the sky won't fall surprisingly.

Exhibit A of reading the title, not the post.
It literally says they can only move Saturday games.

But hey don’t let the truth get in the way of a good conspiracy.

The OP literally says that Friday and Saturday games can be moved.

There will no swapping of games in rounds 20, 21 and 22. Round 23 is floating so that is decided later in the year anyway.

Expect Richmond, Collingwood and Geelong to fill the Friday nights slots in those rounds and West Coast and Brisbane to fill the Saturday night slots.

It seems like supporters will complain no matter what the AFL do. Many have been complaining about boring prime time fixturing for years. Now that they do something about it, there already is a chorus of “woe the non-Victorian clubs”.

Let’s just see what the AFL does with this before we slam the proposal.

All teams would have recover and workloads scheduled throughout the year. And a one or two day change can significantly impact this. This can result in poor outcomes for the teams whose recovery is changed, diminish the quality of the finals and ‘screw the fans’.
There is no guarantee that any game they reschedule will be a good game - no one knows the outcome prior to the game, not even you. A poor game between 1st and 4th on a Friday night whilst a rip snorter between 11th and 14th moved to a Sunday will ‘screw the fans’.
People will watch a Collingwood Essendon game regardless of the time slot - it equally applies to a SA showdown, a WA derby and many other fixtures. People watch a quality product and it is up to the governing body to ensure the product is the best it can be. What if the supporters of a team that get one Friday night game for the year and it’s moved? You don’t think they are ‘getting screwed’? The Auskick parents travelling in from the bush now spending more time and money they can ill afford late changes are getting screwed?
The broadcasters knew the product they were buying. It was a contested ball game. It could be low scoring. It was a game the restarted when the ball was returned to the centre after a goal and immediately restarted. It was Australian Rules Football. The broadcasters have try to influence the AFL to change the game to maximise commercial opportunities, not improve the game. Every chance the AFL has had to promote the integrity of the game over the commercial interests of the broadcaster, it has capitulated.

Richmond have rightly deserved to open the season by playing an exciting, ‘winning’ style of football recently. Carlton have been dog s**t and we have all complained. Why not change that game?

When the Essendon 34 were banned, it was predicted Essendon would be uncompetitive. They played a game on ANZAC day in a prime time slot. Many fans complained and it was predicted to be a dull game. Should the AFL have given the fans what they want and moved that to a graveyard timeslot and allowed two competitive teams with a chance of playing finals the converted timeslot?

but let’s pretend we’re ‘giving the fans what they want’...
