I'd feel a lot worse if we'd sent multiple picks out from several drafts into the future, but this is punting one draft. One and a half max.

We can survive without anyone born in 2001 on our list, riding the progress of our 1999/2000 and then eventually 2002 crew isn't an invalid approach.

Holy shit I am old. 2001/2002 was when I was draft age.

I maintain I was pick 33 worthy, but anyone that knows anything about AFL recruiting would strongly say otherwise.

Quinz i have to defend my honor brah.

Look it seems to me that the "general consensus" is that we overpaid.

Only difference between me and 95% of everyone else on here is that you lot are happy with overpaying. That's it.

You're probably right.

But what if 33 mattered in the next 6 years, while we still have TK.

What if that 33 played a key part in our next premiership the same way Ryan did this year? We'll never know obviously.

As for all you other campaigners @ me, i'll just say this, i feel we've shot ourselves in the foot here.

Particularly in a situation where it all seemed to fall into our lap, gun player, local, out of contract, nominates us, family reasons, what more could you want...

And yet still we've paid absolute top dollar 🤷‍♂️

That's it, i've said my peace. God bless you. God bless us all.

The point you are missing is that no one is saying well done Vosso we got our man and your the best ..

Every one is saying **** we got Kelly bring on 2020 you campaigners ..

Not happy with overpaying crew checking in.

Okay, so I think we overpaid a little - but seriously can people stop losing their bloody nuts just a little bit?

We can't draft mids for quids right now. I see no evidence to suggest that a) this draft crop is somehow notably better at the range where we had picks than years past or b) we've somehow got better at drafting mids.

Despite that, we've just secured a premium mid. Bugger me.

I don't love the trade myself, but I'm happy to see us be opportunistically bold when circumstances present themselves like they did here.

I think the way more interesting question is what do we do with our game plan this year, given the exposure we saw last year and the new talent in the middle? Get excited you sad sack campaigners.

Neale is the very interesting one. Shiel had just had to adjust to an entirely new system and had his worst year in 4 years this year. Same age as Kelly however easily the most important mid to Essendon.

Neale was banana number 2 at freo and then goes to number 1 banana at Brisbane and has a career best year. Both are also inside midfielders, both are also goal kicking midfielders, both the same age and both have 4-5 years at, just below or above the level of form that Kelly displayed this year. From a management perspective you work on 3 things. Exposed form, potential future form and cost.

Kelly has 1 year at their sort of level, they have 4-5. Realistically that should mandate Kelly is worth less in a trade than either of the other two.

Now i'm not saying i'm not happy to have kelly in the side, I really, really am. I also think he's a great player and to be able to put the performances he has in this year with the home stresses he's had speaks absolute volumes for his and his families character and the sort of people they are.

I just think our list management and trade team rolled over and paid well over the odds.

What do I think is fair based upon those previous two trades and this i consider generous. 2019,2020 first round for Kelly and Geelongs pick 36.
What do i think is a fair price based upon knowing what we know about the drafting landscape this year, next year and allowing geelong a media and draft win. 2019,2020 first round and 33 for Kelly and 36. They get the win in not only not giving us back a second rounder they get to upgrade theirs a touch.
What do I consider the absolute max we should have paid and held on for until the very last minute 14,24 and 2020 first for Kelly and 36.

What did we pay. 14,24,33, 2020 first for Kelly and a 2020 third round pick.

Kelly already had a pretty good first year at AFL level, not sure why you so readily discounted that. Then he went up another notch this year.

See, all this squabbling over late draft picks could risk in the deal not happening, then Tim Kelly goes to Freo and at the end of the day it means West Coast don't have Tim Kelly because we effectively wanted Geelong to throw in pick 36. Thirty-freaking-six. Now that would be worthwhile to be salty about.

Maybe I underrated this board's fascination with draft picks and the drive to 'win' trade week. End result however is we have addressed a key weakness with a top 10 mid that actually had a realistic chance of coming here. Who else could have come here to help us this much in our flag push?

I’m just happy to improve our already great list.

You’re scared of the dizzying highs! Too busy waiting for the drop to enjoy the ride.

I think the one thing in our favour is the fact that we nailed that Gold Coast trade and the 2016 2017 drafts. It put us years ahead in terms of our draft position and allows us to completely drop out of one in pursuit of the missing link. I agree that we probably overpaid as it’s now looking more like a breakeven now that we’ve dropped out of 2019 rather than coming out ahead.

But over the last 3 years.

IN:
TK

Think we still come out ahead, plus the trophy cabinet having 1 less empty spot.

Dark Sharks I'm still waiting to hear what a gun Laverde is and how we should get back to you in 6 years when you're right again bruz

Ya win some you lose some bruv. I'm not perfect, contrary to popular belief 💃

Laverde needs to ditch that spud team before he comes good i reckon. Don't think i wanted Cockatoo any more than anyone else on here though from memory.

Maynard i was right about, pity he went to that team. Jury's out on Scrimshaw, Bailey and Eli Smith.

If the difference between the 33rd and 52nd best kid this year, and the difference between a future 2nd and future 3rd means you don't want Tim Kelly then that would be extremely poor list management.

Is it ok that we paid the equivalent of pick 15 more than what brisbane paid for a contracted neale last year .

That should have been the maximum we paid for kelly .

We could have traded our future 1st + 24 for a pick around 10 to add to pick 14 then demanded a 2nd in return and kept 33 as well .

Everyone keeps complaining we have no young midfield talent coming through well thats not going to change for at least 2 years now that we paid massive overs .
