My appraisal of the top 8 performances:
1. Joshua Ledet - (if you don't know me by now) - I loved how he controlled it at the start and sang it straight, and then let loose with his tricks at the end. A WOW performance.
2. Jessica Sanchez - (“How Will I Know) - This girl is often compared to Pia from last year but in all honesty she is better than Pia. Her voice is to die for! She can sing ballads and up tempo with equal skill and believability. She is only 16! It blows me away just how much talent this girl has. Another WOW performance
Jessica and Joshua's duet the George Michael/Aretha Franklin tune, “I Knew You Were Waiting for Me” was a real highlight even though I didn't think they needed the big choir back up and I felt it restricted both of them really going for it vocally in the end. But the song really showcased why these two are two of the best in the competition
3. Skylar Lane (Wind Beneath My Wings) - at last showed some vocal dynamite rather than just her solid country twang. A bit too nasal for me at times and she needed to hold some of the notes longer which showed poor breath control. But despite these criticisms I thought she sung it beautifully over all. Great song choice for her.
4. Deandre - (I Like It) - I really dug him tonight and he sung well and had such a nice groove going. His best performance on the show so far by a long way.
5. Phillip Phillips - (That’s All) - While he ended the song well I think early on he struggled with the phrasing and it detracted from the performance. Solid but not as good as he has been on past shows.
6. Colton Dixon (Time after time) - a really nice version of it this guy is a great performer.
7. Hollie Cavanagh (What a feeling) - agree with the Judges she was over thinking it. Poor song choice because she had to start in to low a key for her so she could handle the key changes at the end. Bad choice.
8. Elise Testone (I wanna know what love is) had an off night as even in the duet she struggled. She wasn't hitting the notes and her pitch was off more than once. I thought you could see in her eyes that she knew it was going pear shaped and she tried to sell it with a bit of over acting on her emotions. Sounded like she was singing with a sore throat tonight. Hopefully previous good performances will save her.
I think Hollie could be in trouble this week
