My appraisal of the top 8 performances:

1. Joshua Ledet - (if you don't know me by now) - I loved how he controlled it at the start and sang it straight, and then let loose with his tricks at the end. A WOW performance.

2. Jessica Sanchez - (“How Will I Know) - This girl is often compared to Pia from last year but in all honesty she is better than Pia. Her voice is to die for! She can sing ballads and up tempo with equal skill and believability. She is only 16! It blows me away just how much talent this girl has. Another WOW performance

Jessica and Joshua's duet the George Michael/Aretha Franklin tune, “I Knew You Were Waiting for Me” was a real highlight even though I didn't think they needed the big choir back up and I felt it restricted both of them really going for it vocally in the end. But the song really showcased why these two are two of the best in the competition

3. Skylar Lane (Wind Beneath My Wings) - at last showed some vocal dynamite rather than just her solid country twang. A bit too nasal for me at times and she needed to hold some of the notes longer which showed poor breath control. But despite these criticisms I thought she sung it beautifully over all. Great song choice for her.

4. Deandre - (I Like It) - I really dug him tonight and he sung well and had such a nice groove going. His best performance on the show so far by a long way.

5. Phillip Phillips - (That’s All) - While he ended the song well I think early on he struggled with the phrasing and it detracted from the performance. Solid but not as good as he has been on past shows.

6. Colton Dixon (Time after time) - a really nice version of it this guy is a great performer.

7. Hollie Cavanagh (What a feeling) - agree with the Judges she was over thinking it. Poor song choice because she had to start in to low a key for her so she could handle the key changes at the end. Bad choice.

8. Elise Testone (I wanna know what love is) had an off night as even in the duet she struggled. She wasn't hitting the notes and her pitch was off more than once. I thought you could see in her eyes that she knew it was going pear shaped and she tried to sell it with a bit of over acting on her emotions. Sounded like she was singing with a sore throat tonight. Hopefully previous good performances will save her.

I think Hollie could be in trouble this week

My wife googled the elimination and was throwing out hints and counter hints to mask the hints. Annoying the crap out of me. Was out last night at the game and only just got to hurry through the show.

A matter of personal taste but in terms of enjoyment;

1. Colton - made it his own
2. Jessica - love the fact she can go up tempo
3. Phillip - just his originality
4. Joshua - I know everyone thinks he blew them away but I tire of the vocal gymnastics and he is picking songs where he can use his gospel runs like Jacob Lusk.
5. Skylar - Good to see her mix it up, pretty herself up a bit. Decent performance.
6. Deandre - solid performance. It's just not my cup of tea. Bores the crap out of me.
7. Elise - solid vocals on the chorus, flat and lifeless during the verses. Wrong song choice.
8. Hollie - Solid in the chorus, pitchy everywhere else.

Duets: Joshua went away from his solo vocal stylings here. Should venture out a bit more next week. Jessica was great.

Disagree that Elise was off in her duet. Thought she overshadowed Phillip and he struggled in it. Thought Elise should have done Stevie Nicks in her solo performance because I enjoyed her strong vocals in the duet.

Colton drew the Islands in the Stream short straw. Definitely out of his comfort zone.

I really ummed and ahhed about Colton's performance and though it looks like I marked him low, I did rate his performance highly. I just thought the others I put above him were marginally better. I am talking like 1-2% better.

No problem with that. I rate Joshua lower some weeks because he has too much gospel flavour and I can't get the Jacob Lusk comparison out of my head. He's way better than Jacob though, I admit.

What is the theme next week? Elise needs to find a way to rock out again. That is where she is safe. Hollie is the one getting by on the cute little non threatening to the teens vote for the moment. Has been very limited and made several poor choices or interpretations. I like her. She is cute. However I don't want her to stay at the expense of someone I really like.

Whispers around about it being Beatles week next week but then that was withdrawn. That would suit Colton to the ground, as he could do Let It Be behind a piano.

Colton has apparently said on Twitter that he is glad to be around another week and happy with his song choice as he is going to melt faces. Rock week perhaps? If so, Hollie and Joshua particularly might struggle.

Looks like Hollie will be gone next week. Never really liked Deandre sound so happy to see him gone.

The sad thing for Deandre is his performance last week was (for the first time) pretty good and based on all the performances that night did not deserve to go.

But when you take into account how average he has been in previous weeks it was the right choice in the end.

Hollie needs a big performance this week I agree.

My Critique of the Top 7 Performance show

Firstly the quality of performances tonight on a whole was probably the best I have ever seen on AI across the board. They all did a great job!

1. Jessica Sanchez - (Stuttering," by Jazmine Sulivan) - The judges told her she wasn't dynamic enough and nearly spat out my milo. She sang this song note perfect with so much soul and emotion that she outshone Joshua IMHO. Flawless again.

2. Colton Dixon - ( "Love the Way you Lie" by Skylar Grey) - I love it when Colton breaks down a song like this and puts his stamp on it. Powerful performance, soulful, emotional, and beautifully arranged.

3. Joshua Ledet - (' "Runaway Baby" by Bruno Mars) - The judges think the sun shines from his bum but in all honesty I get the feeling he is cruising, doing it by the numbers. He was pitchy on a couple of his grungy screams which broke the groove for me. It was good to see him go up tempo and he will be a star no doubt. Still it was a really great performance overall but I worry he is going to sing his way out of the competition if he continues this by the numbers approach.

4. Elise Testone - ("You and I" by Lady Gaga) - Elise was back this week with a song that was perfect for her in style and tone. She sang the bjesus out of it and got a great response from the audience for it.

5. Phillip Phillips - ("Give a Little More" by Maroon 5) - the song title was apt for what Phillip had to do tonight but unfortunately all he did was give a little of the same. He is another who could sing his way out of the competition is he isn't careful and needs a wow performance to put him back in the top tier again.

6. Hollie Cavanagh - ("Perfect" by Pink) - Much improved and I thought she relaxed a lot compared to her last performance. I thought the judges were a bit tough on her to be honest as I really enjoyed her vocals. But is probably the favourite to be eliminated this week.

7. Skylar Laine - ("You Don't Know How Much I Loved You" by Kellie Pickler) - She was solid but something happened to me during her performance my mind started wondering and thinking about other things. That's why I put her last because these formulaic country songs really bore the crap out of me. But she will stay another week most likely.

Elimination - Holly

Yeah they all did a pretty good job. Would be pretty hard to single anybody out this week. I'm thinking Hollie and Skylar are the ones that don't fit but not sure what the voters will think. Maybe Hollie goes home and Skylar keeps getting the strong country vote.

The judges will use their save if the final 5 isn't:

Jessica
Colton
Phillip
Joshua
Elise

They can only use it up to a final 5 anyway so this week or next week it is.

I like Holllie for some reason and really dont get Jessica and Joshua.

Love though Elise

I hadn't watched for quite while until this week. Not sure why Josh is getting such a massive reputation based on his performance this week. It was good, but it certainly wasn't OMG THATZ CRAZY good, like J-Lo seemed to be going. That little latino girl, Jessica, my God she is good. Give her a few years and the right songs and she is dominating charts around the world.

Colton and Phil seem to be the pretty boys of the comp this year and are skating by on their looks, especially Phil from this weeks performance. There is something about Colton that intrigues me. Will need to see more.

Skylar and the other blonde chick (forget her name) are pretty much cookie cutter singers with not much to offer imo. It seems like Josh is the favourite but Jessica is my favourite now.

Elimination show Top 7

Bottom 3: Joshua, Elise, Jessica

A real WTF? moment as three of the best singers get into bottom 3 after really good performances this week.

Elimination - Jessica - another WTF moment but the whole way the Judges handled "The Save" was extremely contrived and made the drama of it a bit of a joke in the end. Especially when Steven Tyler said they wouldn't send any of the bottom 3 home tonight. So we all knew they were going to save her so the big dramatic rush onto the stage just looked stupid.

Randy is right about one thing Jessica possibly is one of the best singers in America and her lack of votes had that Pia flavour to it from last year.

Hollie & Phillip dodged bullets this week but IIRC having a save this week usually means 2 get eliminated next week unless they decide to eliminate only one because they sent that bass singer guy home because he was a wanted criminal.

It will be interesting to see how they handle it but at least we get another week to hear these 7 very talented young singers perform.

My jaw dropped and my hands were on my head in disbelief. Would never have picked that result after the performances last night.

I thought it was a bit odd Colton was going to be in what everyone was thinking to the bottom three, but he was with Hollie and Phillip, so I just thought he was a bit stiff, but when Skylar was placed with that group I was in shock.

Followed by the news that Jessica was "going home" topped it all off. Glad they saved her, obviously deserves to win the thing. Still don't understand how she did not poll votes after that performance last night, thought she was absolutely fantastic, unless it was an unknown song that did it? Who knows. Glad she is safe.

The thought of it being rigged kind of did cross my mind briefly. Hmmmm.

I missed the ep. Thanks.

They had to use the save this week or next anyway as it can't be used in the top 5. We have seen this before. A favourites fan base gets complacent, especially as she hasn't been in the bottom 3 before and voila ..... That's why they introduced the save. Her fan base will now vote strongly the next couple of weeks. Happened for Big Mike a couple of years back.

It doesn't bode well for these 3 though. Elise has been in the bottom 3 a few times and clearly does not have a teen vote going for her. She simply MUST rock out more to survive. Joshua has been bottom 3 more than once.

The fact that Skylar is safe compared to those 3 really highlights how strong the country vote is. I mean they got two country singers through to the finale last year.

Just because I think Jessica and Joshua particularly would have been save, doesn't mean I am a fan.

If I was buying music from these singers, my preference order would be:

1. Elise
2. Phillip
3. Colton
4/5 Jessica/Hollie
6. Skylar
7. Joshua

I have to admit that I have heard some great singers on this show over the years and what I find is that when some of them put out albums of original stuff or when I see past contestants spruking their latest release on the elimination shows, it just doesn't quite have the same oomph for me. So I have never bought an album of any of the performers from the shows to be honest.

You can have a great voice but to release a song that sets the world on fire (and not in that top 40 they 'all sound the same' kind of way) is make or break for any recording artist. When you think of the great artists that you love, their signature songs pop into your head immediately. It must be so hard to write or find someone to write you songs like that. Then to record it in a way that it just doesn't become more of the background noise that makes up most of the music charts these days.

Having a great voice and a good look is a start I guess for these kids but there is so much that can wrong along the way. Most likely most of them will achieve some moderate success in America but I'd love to see a singer like Jessica take the world by storm in a Celine Dion /Whitney Houston (without the drugs) kind of way. But we may have to wait until she grows up a bit more before we see it.

I'd hate to see her turn 20 and be burnt out and used up by the cynical music industry.

:thumbsd: at the result show.... WTF

too many teen girls voting for looks over talent. Very disappointing.

Next week they sing two songs each. Loved that they finally went for a current theme. I thought it was a really good show. Hopefully the theme is similar next week.

Hollie and Phillip need to go next
