Roast An open letter to Josh Jenkins

JJ's basketball tap down to Eddie for a goal made me think of this thread.

I know it's not what you're getting at but it still made me laugh.

Perhaps a bit of perspective for people here

Jenkins sits 14th in Goals Per Game averages this season. Of the top 14, Jenkins also has the least AFL experience. Of the top 14, Jenkins has the 2nd most hit outs per game (Tippet is less than 1 per game ahead). Of those players in the top 14 goal averges this season, he averages the 9th most scoring shots per game. So yes he is a little inaccurate, but many of the games best forwards have similar accuracy stats.

That isnt a bad ranking when you consider some of the players above him are their sides number one target such as both Reiwoldts, Kennedy, Schulz, while Jenkins has 3 other forwards in Betts, Pods, and Walker to compete along side. Each of those forwards would be an automatic inclusion into most teams forward line.

I think his biggest problem is the coach, Bicks isnt a forward. I wouldnt get a plumber to wire up my power points, as I wouldnt want a midfielder coaching my forwards.

Jenkins averages right now have him at around 50 goals a season. Id take that every day of the week. Betts and Tex are also kicking at around 50 goals a season averages, and Pods at around 30-35. That is a pretty hard forward line to stop.

Im all for Jenkins getting better, dont get me wrong. But im happy with what his outputs are

Agreed. Good summary. Imagine where he might be with a specialist forward coach?

I havent seen this acceleration in weeks. Looks so slow to get off the mark to put a chase on.

Isnt he a top 3 over 20m at the club?

JJ is soft. Genetically soft. That cant be changed. What he is now is all he will ever be. He will pop up every third game with 3 or so goals and thats all we will get from him
He also isnt new to the game. Played alot of jr football before going into basketball. He is not the answer to our forward line. He is a depth player.

Last time Jericho kicked 40 goals was.........

Sorry, I do get your point but that comparison is insulting. Yesterday he took 2-3 pack marks and even chased opponents down and I thought 'here we go' and then...... back to type.

He's a work in progress
At the moment we can't afford works in progress
But due to the draft sanctions we have few other options..

He's a work in progress

Was having a pretty good season but has had a very poor month or two. He's a missing man at the moment.

Our tall forwards just look terrible right now. Walker isn't dominating games, Jenkins goes missing, and we're stuck relying on Podsiadly. No wonder our forward line looks poor.

Jenkins actually looked slightly better last night but still way off where he needs to be.

When your best pack mark is a 32yo guy entering the last year of his career, you know theres an issue. Walker was never going to dominate games this year, but a goal return of 30+ and most importantly no signs of impaired movement are fantastic. Jenkins doesnt need to improve much, but it seems as though he knows what he needs to do. 2nd full year of AFL footy and kicks 40+ goals, neither Tex nor Skirt did that did they ??

He wont reach the level of those 2 but he doesnt have to providing he starts throwing himself about more. With him, Tex, Lynch, Betts and CC we still have a potent forwardline.

Flick him to the backline and see how he fares. It's not like he could do much worse than our current options.

Watching Gunston playing at FB against Geelong last night, Clarkson demands flexibility from his players. It showed just how far we have to go as a club really and it got me thinking - Jenkins wouldn't be able to shirk contests and tackles because if he does it In the backline he'll be exposed horribly.

Not like we have anything to lose from the experiment.

When he was drafted it was with this in mind. Some of his early footy at Sturt he was flicked from forward to back and I agree we need our guys to play more than one spot.

Opening my paper today to see Jenkins lying there with his dog made me want to punch the paper

Jenkins runs to the wrong spots .......he does not put the fear of god (or his size) into defenders as he runs himself out of position

That's what they call going out of structure ......IMO Jenkins has not improved one bit this season and we may have already seen his ceiling

I agree ....doubt he'll be more than a 3rd tall ...he is definitely not a KPF

Play him on Riewoldt this week…will get 10+ kicked on him but it will be an education in work ethic, desire, footy smarts, courage, leading patterns.
