Society & Culture Animals as "things" - where's the logic?

A middle ground would be nice. Yes, animals are living things and they have feelings. But please don't talk to them like people and treat them as if they're your child.

Yeah good post.

I've always grown up with dogs. My old man is a hard bastard who grew up on a massive property. He loves animals, and is amazing at interacting with them. But to him, they're just a dog, and I guess thats the way I've turned out as well.

Dog stays outside, dog doesn't eat our food at the table, dog gets told to piss off when it's lingering around food. Dog gets disciplined.

At the end of the day that's the way the dog needs it anyway. They're a pack animal, and are more than comfortable being submissive to a master. You end up with a well behaved, loyal companion.

My best mates family are the complete opposite. The type of family that gets family photos done including the dog. The dog stays inside, sleeps on their bed, eats food with them. And the thing is a royal pain in the colon. House stinks of dog, hair everywhere and they have no control over it. It's the boss.

And when they talk to it like its a human, I have to leave the room.

Some studies have shown that dogs have the intelligence of two year old toddlers. Do you mean, like, talking as in a conversational sense, or talking as in a doting kind of way?
