Yes I was there. I was 14. It was my first Grand Final. Why do you ask? It was afwul. LOL

By the way, I gave you a crowd figure from last year which you havn't comented on yet. You said that Collingwood would be able to match Essendon if the Maggies were at the top of the ladder.

Well, last year in Round 6 you were equal top. You were 5-0. Unbeaten. You played North and got 55,000. We played North later a few weesk later on a wet day, and we got 67,000 against them. Can you explain those figure for me please? If you think you can match Essendon, how come you got only 55,000 on a perfect day when you were unbeaten. I mean, the Magpie army should have been out in force, shouldn't they? After all you were unbeaten and equal top on the ladder.

You were 13-0.........67,000 is what you would expect.......55,000 is a good crowd so im not worried about that figure.

Jesus Dan you can rig the stats to look however you like. How about in the same season, Round 10, we got 64,000 to Rich vs Pies (after we had 4 consecutive losses) and in Round 2 when you played Richmond, you didn't even make 50,000. Or in Round 1 when Hawthorn vs Coll got 54,000, and yet in Round 4, Essendon played them and only got 46,000. Need I go on? Your stats mean sweet didly.

JLC,

There is nothing wrong with 55,000.

But you seem to be in denial about Essendon's following. Just accept that we have a shit load of fans, because we are a great club. 2 premierships greater than Collingwood as a matter off fact :D

We played Richmond on a Thursday night. A weeknight. Why the AFL did that is beyond me. We played them in Round 17 (with Richmond coming off sucessive losses) and we got 73,000.

Our Hawthorn match at Colonial in Round 19 was a lockout at. It would have drawn over 65,000 at the MCG. In Round 4, Hawthorn had suffered 2 massive losses in rounds 1, and 2, and had an unconvincing win in round 3. It didn't promise to be much of a contest, and it wasnt. We won easily in front of 46,000

When all factors are equal however, Essendon will draw more than Collingwood.

Dan, you have absolutely no proof of that. All factors are never equal. It is pure speculation and hope on your behalf. However, we at least can turn to the record books. Biggest Australian sporting crowd ever? Coll vs Carl, GF 1970. Biggest AFL/VFL Home and Away Crowd? Coll vs Melb, 1958. In fact, if you look through it a bit more thoroughly, almost every record involves Collingwood. Funny that really isn't it..

Brilliant!!!!!!!! Couldnt have said it better myself.

Swoosh,

That's because, for 90 of the 100 years of the VFL-AFL, Collingwood were the most successful, and therefore most supported (hence the crowds)

Gradually, as the decades have gone on, the Magpies have got worse and worse, and now, over the last 10 years or so, have been overtaken by Essendon.

Collingwood hold the VFL park record (92,935....how the hell did they fit them in?)

Collingwood have the biggest home and away crowd record (99,500)

Both Essendon and Collingwoos share the second biggest crowd (94,825 in 1995)

Essendon holds the record for any club vs West Coast in the home and away (55,000). We also drew 69,000 against the Swans in the home and away in 1996, which Collingwood have never come close to.

Excluding Jason Dunstalls last game for Hawthorn at Waverley against Freo, we are also the club who holds the record for the 3 biggest attenances against the Dockers in Melbourne. This is one of the best indicators, because the crowd is made of entirley of one team, and shows just how much support that team has.

WE also are responsible for the record crowd for any Geelong home and away match (87,653).

So, yes there was a time when the Pies had the most fans. But you have to understand that people don't support losers, and as Collingwood continued to go on, and lose, and lose, and lose, Essendon overtook them. We now have the most

We dont want fickle "supporters" who will change like the wind. Thats fine Dan people only barrack for essendon because they are winning at the moment. When the hard times hit they will desert you.

I will admit Essendon draws big crowds to watch interstate matches. Congratulations......

JLC,

We had over a million fans watch us in 1997, and we finished 14th.

Collingwood had "about" 800,000 fans wach them last year, and you were 15th.

Our fans don't desert us. The Bombers have had a strong following for decades and decades. It didn't just "happen"

Dan read Saturdays Herald Sun and see what the players think of the Collingwood and Carlton clashes.

"100 years of unrivalled rivalry"

Very interesting quote dont you think Dan. That was the heading of the lifout in the paper. Do you think there is a message in that Dan ??

JLC,

They were saying the same thing when Essendon played Collingwood, and the papers hyped up the Essendon-Carlton round 3 match as well. The newspapers will hype up the blockbuster of the moment.

Why the disappointing crowd, anyway? If it was such a great rivalry, wouldn't you be getting 90,000 every time, regardless of ladder positions?

Same article predicted a crowd of 90,000? Crap all round wasn't it. Bandwagon lost a wheel? What's a lifout anyway?

Dan, firstly, your mindless statistics and figures prove sweet jackshit. It's your word against everyone else's. I say Collingwood has the biggest drawing power in the league, you say otherwise, who gives a stuff, I say you're wrong and I'm right. The debate is pointless and becoming extremely boring.

And secondly, if the Essendon-Carlton rivalry is so damn great as you say.. then how come we drew more against Carlton on Sunday than you did in round 3? As you say, if it is such a great rivalry, you would be getting so many more people to it. 63,000 is a pissweak crowd considering Essendon are the 2000 premiers and Carlton were considered the next best side.

People were away on holidays for Easter in Round 3. Essendon and Carlton average more than 73,000 since 1995, which is MORE than what Collingwood-Carlton average over that time. That tells a story.

Collingwood have always had massive support, but you now play second fiddle to Essendon. It was bound to happen, when you win only one flag in the last 42 completed seasons. You have been overtaken. And it's not surprising either, especially considering the Bombers have won 2 more flags than the Magpies.

Dan
There was 300,000 people lining the streets of the city for the Federation Parade on sunday, yet another 74,000 still attended the footy. You think a few people would have gone to the footy if the parade wasn't on, or had the intention to go but stayed at the parade instead? Possibly.
Oh and there were no trams either.

Who the hell gives a rats tossbag who has more supporters, no one will ever know who has the most supporters so leave it as that.

All four of the top Victorian sides (Richmond, Essendon, Collingwood, Carlton) have a huge supporter base some bandwagoners included.

Also unless you were around in the early part of last century, you wont know who had the bigger rivalry between fans, Lou Richards actually rates Richmond as his biggest rival in his days at Collingwood, now isnt that a suprise.

The good thing about this year all 4 teams (the big 4) are doing well so all supporters can come out and say things like "We are bigger", "No we are bigger"!!!!, and thats whats great about footy, whether you like the opposition or not the rivalry is great for football.

So in conclusion, shut up, sit down and ****ing support your team through the good and bad, and look at there success as a team and not as whats in the stand. Also to the Collingwood supporters, give respect to the Kangaroos, they are an example of even though the dont have the fans the hurt you where it hurts most.....with successs.
