McCarthy on rape charges
07 September 2003 Sunday Herald Sun

FORMER Kangaroos and Fitzroy star John McCarthy has appeared in court on three charges of rape.

McCarthy, 36, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

It is alleged McCarthy r*ped a woman, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, on January 11.

He was remanded on continuing bail to appear for a directions hearing next month.

McCarthy appeared before Judge Michael David in the District Court in Adelaide. The offences were allegedly committed in Ethelton, an Adelaide suburb.

McCarthy grew up in Tasmania and began his playing career at North Hobart. In 1986, he moved to the Kangaroos and played 92 games.

His moved to Fitzroy, where he played 71 games, before returning to North Hobart in a player-coach role.

McCarthy, who kicked 101 goals in his VFL-AFL career, was lured to the SANFL in 1999 and played 52 games with the Eagles, including in their 2000 grand final loss.

In September 2001, – then playing for Woodville-West Torrens – he announced his retirement from the game.

At the time, McCarthy said he needed to get football "out of his system".
