My computer got rammed up the arse by a virus that seemingly came out of nowhere. Lost a lot of important files that just shits me off if I think about it too much.

**** those *****. Probably masturbating to this post because their only joy comes from other people's misery rather than the actual feeling of a vagina itself.

It's a pretty poxy hobby but you can understand the attraction. I'm sure for most programmers there's few better challenges than coming up with new and innovative ways to beat internet security.

Were you backed up?

Is that not the most single annoying question in the world?

Seriously though, if the files are that important then back them up :)

Who still gets viruses?

We should all be smarter by now.

Hard to stop 0 day infections.

Though you're correct in that majority of viruses are easily avoided

trend internet security PRO

yes it blocks a few websites but I'm abit of a net surfer and i let it run out.

Got destroyed by viruses downloading a movie from piratebay through bit torrent.

Got trend updated and now I'm all good again.

Started looking at hacking/malicious coding in my IT years simply out of curiosity... but then CBF and spent spare time gaming, with GF and mates.

Simply put there are 3 reasons people create viruses:

1 - Curiosity... often no major harm done by these newbs who find better things to do.

2 - Power/Recognition... those who do actually dedicate time to it do so to create a field in which they can control others... in order to be known and feared in a way.

3 - $$$... again people spend time building skills so they can make $$ (either legally or not).

As others have said most viruses can be easily avoided... a combination of common sense, good browers (and settings), good security software, good network security (WAN, Router/Modem settings)... etc.

At the end of the day connect your computer and files to the internet is like parking your bike in public bike rack... with no locks/security anyone can walk by and steal it if they choose. If you use more security it can still be stolen, but it makes it harder to steal and only determined crims would do it (if worth while).

This is a cool video that graphically represents a computer defending against attacks.

I've never had any major virus problems. Found a bit of spyware and the like here and there, but never lost any files, never had info stolen (to my knowledge), etc. I don't know if I'm just lucky, since I just use free AVG, wouldn't know the first thing about internet security, and I download torrents a fair bit.

It would be nice though if people creating viruses made happy ones. You know, viruses that get into your computer, and instead of doing really annoying shit, just cause a message to pop up saying, "You are an amazing person. By the way, you need to either improve your internet security, or stop downloading pr0n".

I got this one just then saying that BioWare accounts had been hacked and click this link etc etc - I clicked it because it looked legit, and now I'm waiting for a real password reset from the site.

Agreed that you'd have to be a total w***er to sit around writing malicious code in order to **** up someone else's day. But there is no shortage of w***ers getting around these days and they all need to have something to do.

I use https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/account/upgrades ;) and (occasionally, because it's a pain in the arse) NoScripts (at least with Firefox) and that seems to do the trick.

back in high school a mate wrote a simple dosshell thing.

Blank screen.

"Yes means no and no means yes."

"Format Hard Drive Y/N?"

Hid it in the IT guy's machine (from which all machines were re-imaged over holidays) and it took weeks, perhaps even months for this guy to "fix" all of the school's machines, as they had been infected with a really bad virus that wiped the hard-drives.

Couldn't believe anyone would fall for it, let alone a supposed IT professional.

That would've been a massive mind**** though.

Did yes really mean no, or did yes really mean yes? Make the wrong decision, all the hard drives get wiped.
