This week i'll be changing my sig in honour on the Anzac's :thumbsu:

I'm pumper for a massive game. hopefully be partying it hard that night celebrating.

This is the game of the year in terms of Football in Australia.
Hopefully it is a sold out game reaching the high 90,000's.
this game is more than just 4 points at the end of the day, but pride.
we have respect for essendon as they have for us for this blockbuster game.

we will be desperate to get back at the bombers after last years shattering result, was heartbreaking, i was almost in tears.

but hopefully we will come out pumping and with this historic match.

post your best memories from the past 15 years of this epic occasion

my favourite was paul medhurst's inspirational performance of 2008s anzac day match

LEST WE FORGET.

Worthy of a thread.

This game is as much about footy as it is respect for our ex service men and women.

Seeing as you stole my Medhurst memory as my favorite ANZAC day memory I'll take something recent. I think it highlights the significance of this match and came in the for of this weeks message from Mick Malthouse:

"Now we prepare for the annual ANZAC Day game with Essendon. Clearly the AFL feels Collingwood and Essendon have been able to produce football that is worthy of the day, and conduct themselves in an appropriate manner, and we're delighted to be considered for what is a very significant day."

May we play with pride and respect.

Go pies!

The Anzac day game is one of the more tasteful tributes going around (some of the shameless nightclub promotions not so).

It is a big day, starting with the Dawn service, and hopefully ending some time Monday morning with a headache and a recording of the Pies v Bombers game to watch and refresh my memory of the big win!

I have no doubt that this game has become an "event" rather then just another AFL home and away game now.

Also, through the efforts of Kevin Sheedy and Bruce Ruxton (then RSL president) this game has also helped developed awareness of what the day is truly about, with record numbers at dawn services around Australia in recent years, and I can see a direct effect this game has had on that.

The day itself should never be "tarnished", I am glad the 1pm limit on most businesses is still in place, as it ensures some respect is given on the day from all corners.

My ANZAC day routine is to wake up and watch the dawn service on TV, then to arrive at the G rather early and watch all the pre match festivities.

My favourite ANZAC day match has to be 2002, when as huge underdogs, against an Essendon side coming off a GF loss, Burns and Buckley tore Essendon apart in the wet.

I have been to every game since the initial draw at the G (still one of the best H & A games I have ever seen) and have noticed that each year, during the last post, the amount of "idiots" yelling out has got lesser and lesser.

Collingwood and Essendon should be proud of the job they have done in building up not only the match, but also the awareness of what the day is truly about, remembering anyone who has put their life on the line to make us the country we are.

LEST WE FORGET.

Do yourself a favour and get to the Dawn service in person. Then go for a long breakfast somewhere along Southbank. Plenty to do in between the Dawn service and game, and the day feels that much bigger for having attended.

I agree, if possible, try and get to the dawn service. It is simply incredible!

Sends shivers down my spine even thinking about this.

FWIW this annual game has led to me having a stronger understanding of what happened in Gallipoli, and for just that, I think Coll and Ess have done a magnificent job in honouring and respecting Australia's proud history and our courageous diggers!

I've been to dawn services in the past, including Turkey (ANZAC cove) when I was a little kid.

Because of traveling arrangements now (getting the family to the game) I would have to come into the city for the dawn service, then out again, then in again to go to the footy.

I will get to one again, just not this year.

But yes, anyone who can get there, should go, it does the make the day a little more "special".

Just a question, does anyone know where you can buy the ANZAC day badges from online? (or if you can).

Great song ^^^.

I recently learnt about Lieutenant Colonel Leslie Maygar from Kilmore, who died after leading the 8th Light Horse at Beersheba. He was also at Gallipoli and was possibly the last man to leave Anzac Cove. Will be thinking of him on Sunday.
