I'm just pointing out that I wouldn't describe him as unathletic. To me, guys like Oxley and Shaz, who aren't strong in any physical departments are the ones that I'd describe as unathletic. I'd call Kirby an explosive athlete who has to significantly improve his endurance
Agreed. My point is that you can't be an explosive athlete if you are always fatigued and Kirby isn't going to get the recovery time on the bench like players did 20 years ago.

He may do but can he still produce all of those things by midway through the 3rd quarter when his direct opponent is starting to run circles around him?
Yet Jetta did not.

He wasn’t embarrassed by Jetta, but let’s not kid ourselves, he was well beaten by him. I’m one of Kirby’s biggest fans, but he can’t put up AFL standard performances at his current fitness levels.

Jetta held him goalless and to 4 disposals whilst picking up 19 for himself. I think Jetta may have won that battle.
Yes Jetta did, but not as convincing as the stats show, also Kirby was unlucky not to get a couple of goals. Got to the right spots.
Not saying his fitness is good, just saying give him time.
Some need it. Last year ran laps this year doing all the drills this

Look not saying his fitness is great at all. I have watch that game a few times and after kk ran down Jetta he payed more respect. I just think he is a project that we new at the start of last season it was going to take several preseasons at least for him to get were he needs to be.
If he is still running 8+ mins for two kms this time next year then he probably won’t make it.
Running laps last year, doing all the drills this year. Fitness has improved.
I did not expect much better times than he did, would have been amazed if he had.

sorry to throw a spanner in the KK works, But...

I took my young fella down to training on Monday as it’s holidays and watching the 2km run Kirby definitely completed his third lap at pretty much the same time Tom Phillips finished his run.

Wasnt there stories last time they did it of Kirby being lapped pretty early on by Tom??? If Kirby hasn’t been lapped this time surely that has to equal a massive improvement on time?

Someone smarter than me can probably use some maths to work this out Lol. Takes me back to my school days and old maths equations haha

I expect improvement after half a preseason. If every other player who ran the TT then he should at least be able to match or slightly improve his time. Honestly with such a low base he should be one of the big improvers, not have gone backwards by 5 seconds. Tyler Brown managed to improve by 20+ seconds, and like Kirby he was coming off a low base with only 1 year in the TAC system, and he didn’t have the advantage of a full year in the AFL system that Kirby has had so far.

The kid has all the talent in the world, and could conceivably become a top 5 player on our list if he gets his shit together, but it’s increasingly looking like he just doesn’t , and won’t ever have the application needed to make it at the top level. It’s incredibly frustrating to watch.

If that’s true then it sounds like he completely blew up on his final lap, because he was 5 seconds slower than the November TT. Likely didn’t pace himself properly in that case, which is the only explanation I find acceptable for his slower time.

I assume the Oval is 500 metres and it’s simply a 4 lap effort? Certainly to my eyes it looked like it.

He finished his 3rd lap almost identical to Phillips who ran a 6:00 according to the timings. Which means Kirby ran a 2:15 last lap which meant he only slightly fatigued in the last lap.

The other thing that I noticed was that he got plenty of encourage ment when he finished including from Buckley which I thought may have meant he did well.

Not as much as Big Coxy who everyone celebrated getting under 7mins! The big fella crossed the line with a massive smile on his dial!!

I enjoyed reading that, but what the hell was this line:

"for those who claim that Buckley was an ordinary kick when he played"

Do people actually claim that Bucks was an ordinary kick?
Yeah I was like a bit wtf. But I think I remember there was a bit of a feud on there a while back about Buckley’s kicking. Think it was a troll.

at the risk of getting my head kicked off i dont think Buckley was an ordinary kick but he did kick the ball too hard. His passes did not need to be bullets all the time but they generally were.

There's another thread up there currently on the topic, so I guess it's a contextual statement :P

I'd agree with that, particularly in the late 90s when noone in the team was good enough to mark his short passes. I'd also suggest that his round the body kicking technique result in a few more shanks than desirable; nonetheless, he was still the 2nd best kick I've ever seen in a Pies jumper -Daicos 1, Pert 3. The regularity t=which Bucks hit blokes from 60 metres with perfect passes was phenomenal.

Didn't J Stephenson run a 6:21 in the combine but hasn't come close since?

2 Km running times are only one small part of fitness measurement. Plenty of posters have mentioned how different the requirements are in Kirby's role to those in say Phillips' job. There is no point in being critical of his fitness or his conditioning management when we know so little. Later in the year, when we have seen a few games, some comments may be in order, but right now, on the outside looking in, we are like Jon Snow. We know nothing.

Oh please, can't the next series start now? The only thing worse than waiting to see Collingwood play in 2018 is waiting much much longer to witness John Snow in action again!!! Must you remind me??!:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:
