is ponting right ? using specialist fieldsman instead of the normal 12th man and letting their pace bowlers rest up ?? we had better fly symonds back over !!

Yeah why are their bowlers going off after every spell?

I think Ponting has every right to complain.

Yeah he has the right to complain, but really he should of said something before he went out. insted he was run out by the sub and then he cracks it, it just looks bad for the australian captain to do it after being given out.

Apparently they did complain before.

Its on the boundaries of the rules and certainly isn't in the spirit of the game - that said it was a bad call that saw ponting run out as much as having the specialist fieldsman there to take advantage of it.

I don't really understand all this subbing the poms are up to - I'm sure it's within the rules but it sounds a little more like basketball than anything. I've never heard of such frequent subbing of bowlers until this series. I think I can understand Punter's frustration.

the rule states that you may leave the field for an injury or a toilet break and you get replaced by the 12th man. But the bowlers are just going off after their spell and are being replaced by a better fielder who is the english's 13th man!

It is the umpire's call on the substitute...the Aussies asked about this before the start of the series, but the English use of the sub was approved.

As for the fieldsman as opposed to the normal 12th man- I don't believe there are any specific rules governing who may serve as 12th man- folks have commented about Tassie pulling somebody from the stands, I think...

I would say they are pushing the spirit of the rule with their bowlers being subbed out, but again, it is up to the umpire to say yea or nay.

Good thing Pratt was where he was for the Poms- had Butterfingers fielded the ball, could have been four overthrows...if he actually hung on to it...

No, they are not cheating- they probably are stretching the rules, but let's not turn our support into a bunch of whinging....very un-Australian

Rubbish - we're second, behind the poms, for whingeing!

isn't there some rule that you can't bowl for a certain period of time matching the time you were off...or is that just for batsmen.

yeah i believe there is, but im not sure the maximum time your allowed to be off before you start to get penalised.

yep, if your off the field for a period of time you can't bowl for that same amount. i.e. 45 minutes off the field, means 45 minutes you can't participate in the game when you return.

It also includes batsmen. If the opening batsmen goes off the field for an hour then returns, 30 minutes into his return the opposition have collapsed and are bowled out. He then can't bat for 30 (it may only be 20 - i'm not sure if it in includes the 10 minutes for change of innings. I know it doesn't include breaks - lunch, tea, stumps or rain) minutes meaning his team must bat with a different opening batsmen.

England have been doing this since the start of the one day series and it should've been bought to attention then and stopped. Easy rule to stop it - for every minute a player is off the field, it's two (or three) minutes he can't participate in the game.

And if England were allowed to do it, Australia should've taken their tactic as well and rested up McGrath and co. after spells of bowling and bought Andrew Symonds onto the field.

It depends if the player had the injury before the game started or during it. If a batsman comes into the game with an injury and doesnt field at all, then the earliest he can bat is No7.
If the injury is sustained during the game then its up to the captains whether to let the player come on in his normal position or at No7.

A bowler can be off for 8 mins before the penalty kicks in.

bowlers already get fed drinks inbetween overs when they field on the boundry , so theres no excuses to just go off the ground.

Remember when the WIndies bowlers used to go off the field a fair bit and Roger Harper - who just happened to be the best fielder in the side- was always 12th man and always seemed to be on the ground.

i dont know whats going pi$$ me off more.

england winning the ashes or the fact vaughn is gonna be made a hero when infact he was 2 runs away from losing it and when its the bowlers who are making the difference.dont need to set fields for lbw's and caught behinds and bad shots cause of the pressure the bowlers are putting on.

The funny thing about Ponting having a bitch is that the sub fielder was on there legitimately as Jones was actually off injured
What about Harmison?

Who gives a ******** maybe Ponting should concentrate on playing CRICKET and if the umps are letting it go why doesnt he do the same hing when they field. Wouldnt call it cheating just smart.

hahahaha typical arrogant Aussies 'we're not winning, someone must be cheating then'.
I'd be walking off the ground trying to find someone else to point the finger at if i were him too....needed a captain's knock and he takes a garbage run and gets run out. Out captained by Vaughan in the series and he knows it. Well done Vaughany, exposed the dud yet again. :D

Another Pom...whining about something.

It's funny how you think Vaughan has out-captained Punter when the commentators on SBS even said that it's about even it's just that Vaughan looks better because his team is in a better position.
