Looking ahead to the most important series for a long time, we all of a sudden have a gap in what was just looking to be a solid-ish lineup.

As has been stated by some in another thread, opinions on our batting depth appear to be split differently
Thought i'd do a poll with what I feel to be the main replacement options for the Ashes

Usman Khawaja - The frontrunner at this stage
Alex Doolan - One of the more in form domestic batsmen
Glenn Maxwell - Is he good enough to be played as a pure bat, probably not
Steve Smith - As above
Callum Ferguson - Largely forgotten
George Bailey - Leader at T20 level, probably hasnt had the domestic season nessecary
Rob Quiney - Been tried at test level albeit very minimally
Joe Burns - Probably too young at this stage in what is an unexperienced side
Michael Klinger - Selectors could choose to go for older experience, especially English experience
David Hussey - As above, but less likely

I think that the last four rounds of Sheffield Shield will be pivotal in deciding who gets that last batting spot. I think throwing a lifeline to one of the older blokes with English experience wouldnt be the worst idea, cause I would not feel confident of a middle order of Hughes, Watson, Clarke, Khawaja

Didnt see this coming very bad timing with the ashes around the corner, but being a father myself you can understand his reasoning.

I dont follow domestic cricket so I dont know who is doing what but I hope we go with youth for his replacement try and blood a batsman that will be there for 7-8 years! But as we desperatly want the ashes back you'd almost back in experience. Either way ill sit in my arm chair with a beer in hand and cheer them on like I always do!!

Well done to Huss and congratulations on a great carreer it has been a privilege to sit back and watch

Khawaja>Doolan>Quiney. That would be my order, although D.Hussey would be awesome to see.

I think Usman SHOULD be the best long term mature option.
Would love to see Sir David get a shot, but its about 5 years too late.
mongo's should have had him in ages ago but meh.
Khawaja SHOULD be the choice.

Yeah I get the feeling we are in for some pain. Huss was the glue that kept us all together.

Personally I'd love to see Ferguson given a crack at it. Having a goodish season and I thought performed well in his limited over international appearances. Don't know just feel like he is one to step up at that next level.

Otherwise I'd love to see them blood a youngster at 6. Even a Maddinson or Burns. Hughes has come back a better player after experience early.

Doolan or Kawaja, fine with either!
Could even put in Paine as an opener and move Watson down.

I will say though it would be nice to have some Sheffield Shield on at the moment to see some form line.

Just cannot get into the BBL

Ugh...

His name gets mentioned an awful lot around here, but if anyone has watched him bat or even looked at the stats in the last year and a half they would see he shouldn't be in the NSW side let alone given a Baggy Green.

Does it look solid?

Not from where I'm sitting.

It's the weakest Australian batting line-up, with the weakest depth outside the side, for 20 years.

Khawaja is the clear front-runner. To the point that this is almost a redundant discussion.

He was the guy on standby when there was some doubt about Clarke playing in Melbourne.

Is someone going to leapfrog him between now and February?

Yeah just a name I was throwing out there. Trying to get that I'd like to see a younger guy given a crack at it.

Maxwell leapfrogged him from Melbourne to Sydney, as Khawaja is still only standby for Clarke.

Oh and Quiney did at the start of the summer too, says to me the selectors are only including him reluctantly.

Maxwell is only there as an all rounder option for Watson. Not as a pure batsmen. Khawaja will replace Hussey.

Has to be Khawaja. If he fails again, Doolan should be the next cab off the rank.

1. Warner
2. Cowan
3. Hughes
4. Khawaja
5. Clarke
6. Watson
7. Wade

So if Maxwell comes in and performs well in Sydney, they will just dump him for Khawaja no matter what when Watson is fit? Especially with the queries over the ability of Watson's body to hold up when required to bowl more than a handful of overs? Pat Howard was quoted the other day as saying that someone has to take on that workload if Watson's bowling is reduced, and even if Watson is playing this still seems a likelihood.

India comes before England, Khawaja can't play spin, why would it be impossible that the selectors pick someone out of the pack due to this fact? Plenty of reasons Khawaja could be leapfrogged (again). It's not closed for debate as the poster I quoted suggested, IMO.
