I know Okeefe is better. But the choices for no. 6 are Marsh, Maxwell and Agar. Atm, we have no idea how any of them will perform in these conditions so l would have thought a bat off would be good in these conditions.
Waste of time. Rather just make a call and give SOK/Lyon a long bowl.

I dont think a bat off will make any difference to the final selection. The preferred bowling make up will be the decider & that could be impacted by the pitch condition. However I think Marsh will play 1st test as they will want a 3rd fast bowling option.

Ok didn't look into that but still surely Maxwell is better than M.Marsh with the bat. Probably signals that M.Marsh is playing first test and Maxwell is only in the side due to us resting Starc and Hazlewood and there being only one other quick in the squad.

Now I think of it we could even bat O'Keefe ahead of Starc and have right, left, right, left etc all the way down except the openers.
I don't disagree with you on Marsh vs Maxwell. Maxwell would be in my side. It's a gamble either way with any of these options to bat 6.

Won't shock me to see Okeefe bat at 8. He's good enough.

And then what spin options do we go do when they attack Lyon which is going to happen successfully. Maxwell and his part timers werent even used in the 1 dayers. Now, l do agree that Maxwell is probably a better bat, but everyone is talking about the batting and how calamatous it is but our bowling is just as bad imo. Starc in India was terrible last time and hasn't bowled that great for a few months. Hazlewood was pretty bad in SL. Lyon wasn't good either.
We are so focussed on batting that we neglect our bowling which is more important imo. Bowling wins matches, batting saves matches

Btw, just so everyone doesnt forget Marsh did get his higest score on subcontinent conditions. I wouldn't say he is absolutly deplorable idea, but he does have to bat with the tail alot which would impact him

Please tell me you aren't pumping Agar up for his bowling. Take out his 10 for against nsw and his average is terrible. I just don't see his bowling near test standard.

As it is we barely have 2 spinners but Lyon and SOK are the best by a mile.

Maxwell and Smith are decent enough part timers. Maxwell more than part time.

You pick the better bat when talking about a test number 6. Itnis the reason we dumped the useless MMarsh as he couldn't bat!

You cant just pick and choose which performances you do and don't include. His average for this season is his average for this season

He should be used to it- he bats like a tail ender anyway!

It is a rubbish idea...Wade who has averaged about 10 since his recall, Marsh who averages 20 at best....

If you are going to do that then why not take out his games where the pitches are not conducive to spin and see what we get then. You have to realise that when he bowls on pitches without spin (WACA) then he is not gonna get many wickets, looks what he did when the pitch had spin (NSW) and the intraclub match.

Smith is not a part timer, he doesn't bowl himself at all, maybe 3 overs every 5 test matches and even then only when the batsmen are bout over a century each where he is like "**** it, might as well give it a go).
Maxwell is not more than a part timer imo, as l said before he wasn't even bowled in the ODI's and he doesn't get that many in Shield either.

If you are saying to pick the better bat, then why is Wade in the team averaging under 15 l think from the past 4 test matches?

Agar barely puts revs on the ball they are straight up and down darts. I can't see too many Indian batsmen troubled there.

Maxwell was saved for this series and it's a good thing he wasn't bowled as you bowl differently in Odis to test cricket. Smith will bowl a bit more over in India

I don't want Wade near the side you won't get one complaint from me if he was left out!

Leaving Wade out with only Handscomb in the squad would be akin to throwing.

Cmon mate, Okeefe is the one that doesn't put any revs on the ball, they are just darts. Not sure how you think you are qualified to see how many revs Agar puts onto the ball because once again l am going on the game where he tore NSW apart. They weren't just up and down rubbish, they were going square (because there was spin in the pitch -same as India)

Read this:
http://www.news.com.au/sport/cricke...l/news-story/feccd9766f292c1d7fd6bae02a2671f2

“That off-spin is not even handy. It’s dross (rubbish),” O’Keeffe said in a recent video uploaded to YouTube.

“It’s perhaps the worst action for a spinner in first class cricket in Australia. Maxi’s action has fallen apart, because of that drive to bowl dot balls in Twenty20 cricket."

His off spin, is not handy. In India, l believe you need an all-rounder because if one of the bowlers breaks down - which is entire possible - then it puts so much stress onto the others

Smith chronically under bowls himself. I can't see him bowling more than 4-5 overs a match maximum. He obviously has put his leg spinners into the "too hard basket"
He averages over 50 with the ball in first class cricket at more than 4 an over, and a strike rate of 75.

Those aren't the figures of someone who should be bowling more.

The selectors probably said if you hit the chair in practice, you're not playing :p
At the number 6 spot I'd be more inclined to pick a player that would knuckle down and stay in. We've seen too many collapses in previous sub-continent series playing all-rounders.

you wouldn't bowl him 15 overs a day, but 5 a day would be good cos he can chip in with the odd wicket or 2. Remember the Ashes a few series ago, took our 3 wickets i think in the last few overs of the day. And he did start as a spin bowling all rounder so he does have some skill, its just he doesn't practice it anymore.

Staggered that they are looking to drop Khawaja for Marsh. Not because I disagree, but because I thought they would never do it.

Bowlers are picked based on pitch conditions, so should batsmen.

On the sub-continent I'd prefer Marsh and in Australia, SA, WI, NZ, England I'd prefer Khawaja.

FWIW - I wouldn't be picking M Marsh - too heavy footed for turning pitches IMO

Are we seriously considering putting Mitchell Marsh or Glenn Maxwell in the side ahead of Usman Khawaja?! These selectors are a complete joke. Don't get me started on their unwavering infatuation with Shaun Marsh...the guy can bat but jeez he has a charmed life when it comes to selections. What Khawaja or others would give to get the favouritism he does.

FWIW here's the XI I'd be going in with:
  1. Warner
  2. Renshaw
  3. Khawaja
  4. Smith
  5. Handscomb
  6. Marsh (Shaun) - although I think Henriques would actually be the best option if in the squad
  7. Wade (only because Nevill and Hartley aren't in the squad)
  8. Starc
  9. O'Keefe
  10. Lyon
  11. Hazlewood

Exactly my thought; SMarsh should be playing, but the selectors have always been reluctant to drop batsmen for conditions. I hope it's a sign they are making the brave call. And perhaps MMarsh and Maxwell are playing off for the same position.

Khawaja will the Indians bunny if he gets a run over there, probably better for his cricketing stock if he actually just sat the thing out..

I think this is a reasonable point and probably is an example of a common bias favouring batsmen...however (unlike spinners v quicks on Indian wickets where the contrast is obvious) I'm not sure if a few innings is a reasonable basis on which to assess a batsman as being suitable or not for those conditions. I think Khawaja is quality and could perform well on those decks all else being equal.
