GOLD Coast recruit Michael Barlow wasted little time in putting his best foot forward to smash any questions about his fitness.

The 28-year-old recently joined the Suns as a delisted free agent, having been cut by Fremantle after seven seasons in the west. Barlow played 13 games in 2016 before a shoulder injury requiring surgery ended his season in July.

But Barlow starred in his first official day of pre-season training on the Coast yesterday, blitzing a field of about 20 Suns in a 2km time trial.

The man with 126 AFL appearances to his name easily eclipsed the seven-minute barrier to finish first.

Matt Shaw, Aaron Hall, Alex Sexton, Pearce Hanley and Tom Lynch were among others running well, with triathlete Courtney Atkinson watching on.

For all his effort, the man at the rear of the field was big Sam Day – more than a minute behind the leaders. Day, though, is said to be as quick as any across a sprint distance.

Barlow’s performance is an excellent first impression as an intense competition for opportunities in the midfield looms.

Suns coach Rodney Eade indicated the former Docker will be a likely starter in his side’s 2017 season opener against Brisbane, along with fellow recruits Hanley, Jarryd Lyons and Jarrod Witts.

“There is a few spots up for grabs which is pleasing,” he said.

“Obviously the four new players from other clubs, we think they are in for Round 1, everything going well. We think at least two of the picks in the draft will at least be pushing for Round 1 as well so it’s a whole new team.”

The Suns head to the draft on Friday with four top 10 picks (numbers four, six, eight and 10) at their disposal and, as reported by the Bulletin, are intent on snaring some midfield talent.

Meanwhile, Eade said David Swallow is progressing well after a couple of injury-hit years and is well on track to be right for Round 1.

Michael Rischitelli, Touk Miller and Matt Rosa were among those focusing on skills work in the rehabilitation group, nursing their way towards main squad training.

Eade believes the club can enjoy a positive 2017 campaign if they are not subjected to the same injury crises of the last two seasons.

“If we can have a reasonable run we’re pretty confident we will do OK,” he said, taking encouragement from their efforts when severely undermanned last year.

“… I thought our form was quite encouraging so with an influx of some new talent plus the injured players getting back, we’re fairly confident we can push any team.”

So Barlow's legs are still good. If his shoulder is OK, he will be a top 5 player for GC. The B&F isn't out of his reach if Lynch or GAJ miss games. Hope he sticks it right up us.
We won't beat them again with him in that side, unless they've got injury concerns.

They flogged us on the Gold Coast - WITH injury concerns. GC will be right up there this year if they can keep most of their team on the park.

We weren't without them ourselves but yeah, even when we were flying they always got within a goal of us. I think they'll be thereabouts for the top eight. Competition will be hot.

Nicholls, Swallow, Barlow, Lyons, Ablett, Hanley, Rosa, Martin, Hall, Sexton, Lonergan, Miller...

VS

Sandi, Fyfe, Neale, Mundy, SHill, BHill, Bennell, Walters, Sheridan, Crozier, DPearce, Blakely, Weller, Tucker, Langdon, Balic

Let's not go crazy. At full strength I think our midfield is far superior and has better depth. They'll be grabbing plenty of classy mids in the draft this year but don't think they'll be upgrades for them just yet - give it a year or two and it might be scary good though if they can hang on to everyone.

Did chuckle. Fyfe, Sandi, Neale, Bennell, Mundy & Hills beats their midfield. Personally, I think they've lost a lot with Prestia & the oft-injured O'Meara leaving. I can't see them pushing for the 8 in 2017.

Sick in bed all weekend so I watched the 2013 final in Geelong last night.

Barlow was an absolute beast that day. Kicked two big goals in the second quarter and ran his guts out getting from contest to contest. Such an awesome game.

It was surreal seeing Crowls, de Boer, Mzungu, Elvis, Duffield and Barlow running around...

Hell, even Mayne, Ballas and f***** Suban were playing well!
