Think I may be allergic to wheat. Will this be the end of my beer days or is there a wheatless beer? Or is it called cider? :(

Rick, most beers are not made of wheat. Barley is the ingrediant.

You can buy wheat beers such as the german schofferhofer, or red back made by the matilda bay brewery, but are few between.

But your main stream beers such as coopers, west end, cub ( vb, carlton draught ) yada yada yada are all made from malted barley. So you shouldnt be allergic unless there is something in common between wheat and barley that makes you allergic. Maybe a scientist could answer that one :p

Wheat and gluten are kinda the same thing right? Cause I had a bloke tell me once that he drinks german beers because they are made with a much lower gluten content than other beers

Gluten. Rick, if you are having issues with wheat then you may be a Coeliac, which is essentially a gluten intolerance. The same strain of gluten in wheat is found in barley. Most coeliacs cant drink beer, or can only drink certain beers made with specific low gluten levels. Maybe see a dietitian about it.

I love beer, or more specifically, ales. Therefore when I go to the footy I have to drink something else, because the normal West End sh*t and its cousins are unpallatable to me. Thats where cider fits in. OK, its 5 Seeds which gets a bit sweet after a while, but hey, I get through 4 quarters with it.

Anyway, point of this post is that those with gluten problems now have a great range of different ciders they can turn to.

Monteiths from NZ, mentioned earlier in this thread as a good beer, can be found in some establishments with their Crushed Apple cider. Made from real apples not apple juice like most others.

Bulmers on tap is recommended. Also, if you can find it on tap, Dirty Granny made from granny smith apples.

And there are a heap of others. Go out, discover, and enjoy.

Red tins and Pure Blondes, only 2 beers i drink i should really expand more

Or just start by seeing your regular doctor and they will put you in the right direction.

My son is allergic to wheat, dairy, soy, corn and eggs - makes it interesting when trying to work out what he can and can't eat/drink - end up making most of his food ourselves.

So you guys are the ones keeping West End alive. I know it's apparently popular but I only know one person who drinks it. I can't stand it personally, although I wouldn't mind West End as a brand as much if it wasn't for their cringe-worthy ads.

Currently trying out "Ranga" red ale, I bought a 4 pack for the lols, but it's not bad actually.

PS: I'm not a ranga.

I've been drinking Little Creatures Original Pilsner since Australia Day. Sensational beer.
