Best #1 Draft Pick 2000 - 2009

As the 2010 draft gets closer, just wondering who poeple thought was the best number 1 draft pick from 2000 - 2009.

Cant go past Goddard, probably the most versatile player in the league. But the poll probably isnt fair to the last 3 number 1's.

Only the 2000-4 should be considered the others have their prime in the futute. On that basis it would be Goddard for me.

I think Goddard will be the best of the lot, but Hodge is the best at the moment.

I'l have a crack at ranking them in order. I rank them in sections.

The 3 elites:
Riewoldt: Probably the best player out of these number 1 picks, and has been for a while now.
Goddard/Hodge: Honestly I couldn't split them. Hodge has a premiership, but so what? So does Leigh Brown. Goddard has played in two/three grand finals. Both absolute guns, versatile and can play back/mid/forward and dominate.

The next group, on the cusp/not there yet:
Cooney: WB fans will jump down my throat, but I have him here because injuries just held him back a little bit recently. Sure he won a brownlow, but it was a few years ago, and I don't think his recent form has been as good. Can't class him on the same level as Riewoldt/Goddard/Hodge.
Deledio: Very, very, very good player, probably another season or an AA away from being considered elite. That is not beyond him in 2011, also, his ranking will rise as the tiges rise up the ladder.
Murphy: Better than Gibbs IMO, again will continue to improve.
Gibbs: Good player, not as good as those above him.

Too young/still have time:
Kruezer: Excellent start for a big man, injuries hurt his progress, will still be a gun.
Scully: Again too early to call, should be at the least a good mid, potential to be a great one.
Watts: The most dissapointing of the number 1 picks for mine SO FAR, but has plenty of time being a KPF and can't be expected to do much yet.

cant split the first 3, then the rest are no where near, so that suggest there is still much improvement left in Cooney, Deledio and Murphy. The rest are obviously no where near their best.

the list makes you think, personally iv judged Deledio, Murphy, Gibbs and even Cooney in the past and havnt been that impressed. but seeing Goddard mature from an already fantastic player to a top 5 player reminds me that those other guys could get much better (even though they are already great player).

Riewoldt, Hodge and Goddard are the three stand-outs IMO. Not much between them at all at the moment with Riewoldt slightly in front but I think Goddard will have the best career.

Not a great idea to include the no. 1 picks from the last three years, especially when you consider that two of them are talls.

It's no coincidence that those on the list who are currently the best players have been in the AFL system for the longest periods of time.

Whilst Cooney is certainly a challenger, the brownlow is a very poor excuse.

Brownlow = best midfielder that didn't backchat to umpires in the opinion of the umpires for that year.

A better question would be how many brownlow worthy years (ie season warranting that player to be amongst the top handful of best midfielders or overall players of the comp for that year) have each of these guys had? Of course cooney gets a tick for 2008 for this.

The rest havent had enough time to prove themselves yet.

The first five are all excellent players and great choices. The others haven't had all that much time to prove themselves, after all Brendon Goddard in particular took a long time to get into his stride.

Overall, I'd probably pick Hodge but honestly it's a toss up between the first three, Cooney and Lids aren't that far behind either.

For me it was between Hodge and Goddard, Love the way they both go about it, they are both versitile, and have both stood up in a GF (unfortunatly for Goddard hardly anybody else did). I went with Hodge only because i think Hodge had a better year this year.

That being said though, Goddards 2 GF's were probably the best individual performances of the year.

Hard choice between those 2 for mine. If you had one in your team you would be wrapped.

exactly, the last 6 have gone to Melb, Rich, Carl, none of whom have been anywhere near a premiership.. what sort of cretin equates that with them being inferior players

True, but winning the Norm Smith suggests he wasn't riding coattails either. Also has a few more accolades to his name on top of 'premiership player', unlike the Dempster's of this world.

I'm not denying that Hodge is an absolute superstar. More having a go at the logic behind the suggestion.
