Re: Best #1 Draft Pick 2002-2006

that was the 02 draft actually

I voted Murphy, so composed and effective. All class

Even though the drafts are done in November, they are recorded for the following year, eg, records will show Bryce Gibbs being the #1 pick in the 2007 draft even though it was in 2006.

Therefore Goddard was in the 2003 draft

Toss up between Hodge and Cooney - Went with Hodge for the footskills.

Murphy is very quickly catching up though.

Incorrect.

That is true for the Pre-Season and Rookie Drafts which take place in December, but not for the National Draft.

For example, the 2007 Pre-Season Draft and the 2007 Rookie Draft took place in December of 2006. However, the 2007 National Draft will take place in November of 2007.

Sorry guys, my bad.... meant to be 2001-2005. Looking at a dodgy website instead of official AFL records.

Don't think any of the clubs made a real error with selections. Bar Chris Judd who was overlooked based on shoulder history (and even then Hawthorn have to be happy with Hodge) no other top 10 player has really outshone the top pick taken.

Been a few about equal but no glaring misses

Re: Best #1 Draft Pick 2002-2006

Lids craps on them all,he's next chris judd mark my words.

Re: Best #1 Draft Pick 2002-2006

I picked Hodge, only for the fact that he has already shown what he can do.

Lids and Murphy still have a bit of a way to go until they can be considered the best of that list, they are however better than Goddard and Cooney.

Re: Best #1 Draft Pick 2002-2006

Murph's the obvious standout. What is more interesting, is who is the second best from that group. I actually think Cooney is the second best - was disappointing late last year, but has star potential, with natural footy smarts, nice skills, and very dangerous around goals. I think Hodge is grossly over-rated. I've seen a lot of this guy play. Has a stupid angry demeanor on field, that some people confuse with leadership attributes. You often see him pay out on a team-mate during a game - hardly inspiring stuff. He's also a favourite among the footy stat watchers (i.e. the majority on BF). For those that watch the game, you'll notice a lot of his "possessions" are soft uncontested defensive receives, and he gets a lot of them because of Clarksons bizarre, ultraflood-and-chip-sideways game plan. :)

Re: Best #1 Draft Pick 2002-2006

Tough one. Probably Hodge but Cooney is a close second. Murphy will be thereabouts I'm sure by the end of the year.

Re: Best #1 Draft Pick 2002-2006

Cooney. He carries the ball. We could do with a similar player in that mould. If not Cooney as himself, he is as close to ready-made as you can get, and his best years are ahead of him.

Re: Best #1 Draft Pick 2002-2006

Stupid.

Hodge was 2001 draft, Deledio 2004 etc.

Your are one year ahead, hence wrong.

Re: Best #1 Draft Pick 2002-2006

hodge, his ability to play middle, defense and forward, would be fantastic with goodes, kenelly, and keefey

Goddard is also the only one in that list that can play midfield, back and as a KP player.

Better kick than the others too.

No doubt if Carlton hadn't cheated you'd have him ranked ahead of Judd.

Re: Best #1 Draft Pick 2002-2006

Murphy, wouldn't take any of those players on the list ahead of him. Last night showed why. Poor first half, came out after half time and won hard ball situation, carried, used the footy well and his tackling was outstanding. Would take Cooney next.

Mm. JD, might be best if you stick to the Football Administration threads. You struggle when the topics about the actual game don't you. :)
