I don't often give Eddie credit, but last night I think he may have re-invented the old art perfected by Lou Richards of the Football Nickname.

Matthew Lloyd, will now forever be known as 'The Velvet Sledgehammer'

This brought back some memories of 'The Galloping Gassometre' 'The Flying Doormat'and many others.

What are some of the best nicknames you have heard on the footy field - include local as well.

PS Make sure they're printable!!!!

The computer lets you make more mistakes faster than any invention in human history - with the possible exceptions of handguns and tequila (Mitch Ratcliffe)

I had a mate who played in the Ovens and Murray leauge (I think it was), a few years back, and some guy on his team had the nickname "Chobby Monaro". It wasn't his real name, and don't ask me how he got it either!

He was a bit of a cult figure, apparently . . .

My favourite was Rick Davies from Sturt was and still is called the "Jumbo Prince".

Michael Graham also from Sturt was called the "Black Flash". Call him that now though and you'd be done for racism.

When I first started playing footy in the mid 70's I was in a team that was virtually full of nicknames. Even today I still don't know some of their real names.

The mandatory ones like, Animal, Ratso, Tubby, Bluey, Killer, Choco, Cobba etc.

But then there were the more unusual ones like, Blue Balls, Bongo, Puss, Clacka, Splat, Muff (Hunter), Stirfry, Pink Bits, Smigsy, Jock, The Legendary Colonel etc.

But the one that held the most intrigue in my club was from a no hoper player in the 70's. He played only about 50 games but is still talked about. His nickname was simply Nuh and he is legendary.

I like "Baked Bean Head" for Ben Hart

And "Cement Head" for Craig Kelly

"Chili Toe Cutter" for Nigel Smart

Dont have any football ones so here is a few from the NBA.

Dominique Wilkins - The Human Highlight Film
Charles Barkley - The Big Mound of Rebound, more commonly known as Sir Charles.
Toni Kukoc - Croatian Sensation or The Waiter for his nice passing skills.
Shawn Kemp - The Reign Man or now we call him the Cocaine Man as he is in rehab and missing the playoffs with a coke problem.

I was always under the impression it was just "the Flash", but maybe PC was taking hold when I started following footy.

Kouta - the one handit bandit
Hulme - Minnie Me
Mansfield - kleenex
Rice - Bubbles
Whitnall - Blinky
Christou - rake

Hey Olmy, I know of that guy you're talking about, with that name "Chobby Monaro". Not sure if he played in the O & M league though. But it was with one of those teams around the Bright/Myrtleford area. The team wore something a bit similar to a Hawthorn guernsey. Yackandandah, perhaps?

I don't know how the guy got his name, but do remember him. He was some tubby-tank type of flipper, wasn't he? With curly hair, and used to run like a lame donkey?

Apparently he had an attack of the "Jimmy Hirds" out on the field once. Lucky they have dark shorts.
