Just a theory, but I'd like to see a couple of our guys that struggle with accuracy, adopt the old style of drop punt - thumbs behind the ball, beside the lace, and lay back a little on the kick. It's more natural and relaxed than hunched over with hands in front. Also helps balance and timing, and guiding the ball onto the boot. Someone like Menegola may benefit. I guess it depends on the mechanics and flexibility of a player.

Laying back on the kick is exactly what Dangerfield described as the problem that he had in missing those easy shots against Hawthorn in 2016.

I hope we see more of Buzza (and he doesn't get the 2nd year blues) in 2018. The kid has real potential. I think the team picks itself mostly. Menzel will be interesting as his lack of defensive pressure was an issue despite kicking 30 odd goals. He's really playing for his future next year. Will they keep playing Taylor as a CHF, which means Tim Kelly might slot straight into the back line next year. I thinks there's going to be a bit of musical chairs for positions early next year. Can't wait to see Gazza back out there and I hope we see flashes of his old self.

I think that he will avoid 2nd year blues by playing his 3rd year at the Cats in 2018. ;)

Cool, didn't realize next year will be his third. I can always count on someone around here picking these things up. Still, I like the kid and I hope he makes it.

I like to keep a fairly keen eye on the young recruits who are AFL/Rookie listed.

I like the kid too and hope that he improves on last season. He looked lost in his first season. So 2017 was a big improvement. I hope that he grasps the game as a 6'6" or 198 cm 102 kg kid who can kick 60 meters could be handy. He has a long way to go due to only playing AFL for a few years due to a rugby background in QLD.

I also hope the PNG kid Ratougolea improves on his first season.

Further proof you hate Geelong. ;)

would rather play Buzza who might become good over Stanley and Blicavs who have reached their limit and are only 4/10 players

Buzza also provides good forward pressure that can make up for the lack of it by players like Menzel

Buzza , Blitz and Stanley ...

I dont see those three group together... and the one who should be thinking about alternatives is Stanley. If he has any ability to play back then perhaps like Lonergan when Scarlett retired he should be trying to find a way to fit a role with a vacancy and vacancies to come. Who know maybe if played full time down back in the VFL he could develop .. I think he has shown he is not going to be the solution in the ruck or forward.
Blitz will probably continue to play as he has , much to some peoples chagrin , although id try him in the ruck rather than Smith for games where we want more mobility
Buzza's problem for mine , we appear to be heading in the direction of a smaller forwardline. He does give us relief in the ruck , and its another reason id like Blitz in the ruck. A forwardline with Hawkins ,Crameri , Menzel and small forward and a resting mid would seem to make it harder for Buzza to get into the side.

If they have had SavRat practicing his kick it would be a good start.

How could he possibly get second year blues? First, this is his third year not his second. Second, he was clear worst on ground in 4 of his 6 games. He cant get any worse.

Anyone at this stage who still thinks Blicavs is capable of rucking by himself really shouldnt be posting anymore.

One doesn't need to go to North Korea mate... the world is being over run with precious opinionated people who have little tolerance for others with different opinions.. The headlines in Melb papers today talking about riots and injured police all because Milo Yiannopoulos was speaking at a venue. I'll leave the labels out of it as Liberal in the usa has a different meaning than here but I find it ironical that minority groups thats scream their opinions can not stomach other who just wish to talk , and want to threaten others who just want to listen. One should not exclude different opinions or talk them down by deriding someone's worth based on their opinion.. discuss it and nut it out . Are some peoples opinions so fragile that they can not abide others having something different? God knows where we will all be in 10-20 years.. some sort of Handmaids Tale type society.. no wonder ninnies like Trump get elected .. there are people just searching and desperate to hear something other than PC mindspeak.

Rant over

Blitz could not be much worse in the ruck than playing some mids there as several teams did in 17 ..at least as a relief tactic. If Smith is to be worth selection he has to do more than just be tall. He must bring air dominance , he must be someone we can kick too , and someone who marks. He really is a super tall that has at times done his best work away from the ruck role.
And as I have said before..I doubt he will get dropped from the team.

That's a pretty extreme viewpoint given Blicavs' best season at the club was as a ruckman.

It doesn't mean it's inaccurate though.

Ruck is definitely the best position for him personally to stay involved in the game. That doesn't necessarily mean it benefits the team. In 2015 it worked so well we missed the finals and then had to recruit an actual ruckman in Zac Smith.

I agree he isn't a #1 ruckman and the rule change has been to his detriment but he was quite useful as second string ruckman/midfielder who could use his height at the stoppages. I still see his best spot in the side as spelling Smith or whoever they choose to be the preferred ruck.

I must say that was an excellent rant. Fully agree too.

Back to Blicavs, you're completely correct, no doubt Scott's insane infatuation with him will continue. The overriding concern is, if he does play ruck (he averaged an impressive 6 hitouts per game in 2017) no one should be surprised if we suffer in that area.

P , the issue will be on going because we have Smith who at his best is an A- ruck ..but his best is a fairway from his worst..and he seems to struggle to put 4 6 games together. Its not like we have a standout best in league ruckman... and we have not looked to change that... so I don't think we value the role that much.

Gary says he is back to make us "super competitive" .. well there is little he can do to make our big men better..and that (imo) is one of our core failures the last few years. When was the last we had a big man bog in a big game at the G? I still feel we have to do it ..in spite of our talls , not because of them.

Tigers ranked 18th for hitouts this year and 13th for clearances, Bulldogs 16th and 6th the year before, which suggests that the first touch isn't as important as people like to think.

Blicavs would be alright as a no2 ruck if he could play as a forward instead of a useless midfielder.

The problem is that ruck is his best role and he isnt very good at it.

Reckon Stanley could be turned into a key defender like Liam jones and tom Lonergan
He's agile, good off the ground and would do well IMO
Well domsy leaving just mean we lack someone to take the Gorillas. Stanley has all the attributes, but you could say he has them all to be a decent footballer in general and we haven’t seen that yet.

He can't nail a spot down as a KPF/Ruck
If he wants to save his career he needs to go down back
