I am SO KEEN for a huge 2018.
The thread will be back again of course to cover our last 22 games of the rebuild.
Questions i have on my mind are:
- will Lang contribute and become auto best 22 or will he languish
in and out of the side ala-kerridge
- how high can Charlie go. Big breakout year for the kid. Is top 150 in the comp possible???
- what will McKay and Cuningham do, its their third year and im ready for a breakout.
Im looking forward to some great stats for the graph. Lots of kids and lots of improvement

Not yet, Harry not ready to ruck, especially if Kreuzer gets injured during a game.
Wright was brought to the club to do a job , a bridging type player if you like and he has done it well .
He will play games this season but the winds of change are nigh and the future of the club need senior games now .
Kruezer as we know does his best work solo .
McKay looks more than capable of a 5 minute chop out in the ruck , he's a 3rd year player with an aggressive attitude that appears to have developed significantly physically this off season .
Grundy took the mantle of senior ruckman at Collingwood as a teenager and bloody Grigg rucked half the finals series for Richmond .
Sometimes we tend to want to cotton wool these blokes but as "Milton" Daniher has shown , when they are naturally competitive types they love it .
Wright is sadly under rated by too many. He is growing still as a player. Released from midfield minutes as "the kids" build
tanks, he will become more effective as a forward. He may not be Eddie Betts, but has tricks and above all game smarts.
Was head and shoulders above his team mates in some match simulation I witnessed on the Sunny Coast.
Under rated opportunist who will thrive as our young forward line builds pressure. Would not ne amazed if he has a breakout
year of sorts.
Note previously liked, not loved. Surprised when cut loose from Adelaide, always seemed between roles. Still upside there.

Big fan of Wright. When he is playing well we are - barometer? Would like to see more consistency but he loves a goal and kicks straight. Keep.

Don’t get me wrong i love wrighty and would be more than happy to see him play 22 games this year (would mean he is having a great year), but i think barometer is a bit much.
I would say him kicking goals would be more a by product of us playing well.
I think his 1%’ers and game starts is there regardless of us playing well, he is an exceptional professional and footballer but wouldn’t say he is a barometer.

I just hope our young mids can step up this year so Wright can spend as much time around the goals as possible. I'm not a huge fan of Wright as a midfielder but I really do like him as a goal kicking forward. I'd be happy if his midfield rotations are minimal and he spends some time at the feet of Harry/Charlie/McKay or running into the space they create when the lead out and/or suck defenders with them.
He kicked 20 in 2016 and 30 last year so the trend certainly suggests he's good for 40 this year...

Really enjoy reading and contributing to this thread - looking forward to doing so again this year.
We are now 44 games into the 66 game rebuild. Two thirds of the way through and the significant progress we've made in that time is clear for all to see. We still have a long way to go but a really strong foundation has now been set.
SOS really has done a terrific job since returning to the club - he came in with a clear plan and to his credit he has carried through exactly as advertised. You can nitpick and argue over the success of a particular trade here and there but the overall result cannot be questioned - it is positive and overwhelmingly so.
His comments post-draft gave a very clear insight into where we're at right now...
"We have had a lot of list changes over the past three years, 42 changes in three years and we need some stability in our list now, so I wouldn't imagine we would be making a lot of changes at the end of next season.
They're young boys who have got to build some chemistry now and synergy among themselves.
We said we would go to three drafts, we have gone to three drafts now and we need to build some stability and keep these boys and get them playing together."
Phase one of the rebuild is now complete. We've completely overhauled the list from one in no man's land to one that is widely acknowledged as being full of promise, and one of the best young lists in the competition.
Phase two as outlined by SOS above is now underway. We've got to get these kids playing together so that they can develop not just as individuals but as a unit. That's how you set yourself up not just for one tilt at a flag but rather for sustained success - Hawthorn and Geelong being the classic recent examples. Look at their lists in their respective periods of dominance and the importance of a core group playing together for an extended period becomes clear.
Which brings me to our list...
I think we can safely drop the players born in 1992 from this discussion now. None of Lamb, Mullett, O'Shea or Shaw are what can reasonably be considered youthful.
Having included 1992 last season we can keep 1993 this year before dropping them off in 2019.
With that in mind here is our youth (by birth year) as we head into 2018:
1993 - Docherty, Kerridge
1994 - Plowman, Byrne, Graham
1995 - Cripps, Lang
1996 - Marchbank, Pickett, Garlett
1997 - Weitering, Curnow, Kennedy, Silvagni, Cuningham, McKay, Glass-McCasker, McDaid
1998 - Petrevski-Seton, Williamson, Fisher, Macreadie, Polson, Kerr, Lebois
1999 - Dow, O'Brien, De Koning, Schumacher
This thread promises to be a busy one in 2018 - we've got 29 players to discuss! Of course, not all of the above will 'make it' but the club believes this is our core group. This is the group from which the nucleus of our next challenging side will form.
As a reference point here is where we sit with regards to AFL player ratings heading into 2018:

I think they very well could. It'll be all Kerridge though considering Smedts was delisted...
Having a closer look at that post-1992 split of our list. The most obvious improvers (AFL player rankings) are Polson who is currently on negative points and Garlett who doesn't appear to be there because he wasn't on an AFL list last year. I reckon Lang and Kennedy are in for a bit of upwards movement too as they'll now get proper midfield minutes for the first time. Should be plenty of improvement through guys like Charlie, March, Plow, Fish, Cuners, etc all getting up towards/past the 30 game mark.
Would think Graham would drop. Expect Kerridge to still get enough games to maintain or thereabouts. I do think he improved as the season went on and still think he'll feature fairly regularly in the match day 22 (for now).
Also worth noting we've got 29 players born after 1992, which is about two thirds of our list. Those 29 players have an average age of 20 yearas and 9 months with 21 games and 7 career goals. Obvious that's impacted by 7 yet to debut plus Polson, McKay, Macreadie, Pickett and Cuningham having not played more than half a season worth of games. The other 16 guys have an average age of 28 years and 3 months with 121 games and 64 career goals. Pretty stark differences between the two sections of our list.

Hoping Plowman, SPS and Charlie break into the top 100 and Cripps into the top 10 by the end of the season.
Expect steady improvement from Weitering, Silvagni, Marchbank, Byrne and McKay. Hoping for rapid improvement from Williamson, Polson, Cuningham, Pickett, Fisher and Macreadie.
Looking forward to the newbies from other clubs settling in and making an impact, a couple should play early, the rest will need to earn it on the field. Expecting very little from our draftees, will be happy with whatever they are able to achieve in their first year, gone are the days we expect them to be best 22 and in the leadership group from day one.
Expecting Doc, Kerridge and Graham to be the sliders, mostly from lack of game time. Doc wont play and I would hope we have better options than the other two, unless they do a Liam Jones and bang the door down in the reserves.
