BigFooty Official Big Footy 2016 Phantom Draft

Taking over from POULTERBEAR for Geelong. Done a terrific job with Cox giving them the speed they want, Begley someone who can play up and down the forward middle area, Garthwaite down back and then Lipinski who is a bit of favourite of mine and think could develop well. I am told they would like to try a project tall forward but there isn't a lot there and with Clark and Vardy going for mine the player should be;

Darcy Cameron / Claremont / 204cm / 104kg

21yo who was a touch unlucky in his draft year and has just kept plying his trade at Claremont and improving every year. Surely this year he gets a go. Big mobile ruck who gets hands to enough ball at the stoppages and can influence the game around the ground, particularly forward where he can take a good contested mark and be relied upon to convert. In fact he averaged nearly 2 goals a game there this year. Nice fit for Geelong as that replacement for Vardy and Clark and who can back up Smith and rest forward if need be. Size up front would undoubtedly help Hawkins out a bit as well as they could legitimately attack through Cameron. Cats have had a bit of luck with mature age WAFL lads lately.

Cameron I really rate and I think whichever club gets him he will play afl next year. That said in the real thing there is no chance Geelong doesn't take Tom Stewart with one of their later picks (unless another club has taken him first).

Pick # 55. West Coast . Jake Waterman. 191cm 82kg. Medium Forward / Midfielder. Claremont.

Waterman is the second son of former WC dual premiership player Chris Waterman and as such he is taken under the father / son selection status.

Young Jake has been in the spot light for a few years now as his footy ability has been monitored by the media for some time now as the "Father Son bit" always garners additional media hype and attention.

That said Jake is an extremely handy footballer in his own right and is a natural leader.

His leadership qualities are demonstrated as follows: he Captained the WA under 16's in 2015 and then backed that up by Captaining the WA 18's in 2016. He was the Claremont Colts Captain in 2016.
In the 2016 Colts grand final Waterman was judged best on ground when he stared in the Claremont Colts Premiership side, that day he finished with 20 possessions 8 marks and 4 goals 2 points.

One of the standout features of Waterman's game is his overhead marking he takes the ball very cleanly, has strong hands and is a hard opponent to nullify.
Another is his silky ability below his knees at ground level.

Jake is predominantly an outside player and whilst he does this well he is going to need to develop his inside game significantly if he wants to make his mark at the next level. In round 19 of the WAFL he made his League debut and impressed with 15 disposals and kicking 5 goals 1 point.
After such an eye catching debut against Peel, Waterman was always going to be in for a lot more attention in the following weeks , as he indeed was.
As such until Jake finds more of his own footy he is going to be easy to nullify , I though Jarrod Korewha did a great job on Waterman in the WA V Vic Country game as he played him close and tight.
If Jake can learn to become more inside then he is going to be a lot harder to shut down for opposition sides.

Other than ramping up his inside game a notch or two the other aspect of Waterman's game that he needs to work on is his consistency.

The talent is there in spades he just needs to do it more often, as he can drift in and out of a game and even in and out of a quarter.
Having said that Jake is a burst player and make no mistake when he is hot .......he is red hot.

If he gets the mix right Jake has all the tools to become a skill full player who's combination of speed , ability at ground level coupled with his aerial ability are going to prove a difficult match up for opposition. He has all the attributes to make it but I think he is still a few years away from playing regular AFL , he will need to hone his craft at East Perth for a couple of seasons.

Happy to have Waterman in Blue and Yellow and I genuinely hope he is joined by his brother Alec at some point in the future and may they too ( like their father ) both become dual WC premiership players.

you are that sure?

As sure as you can be with these things. Matty Scarlett who was his defense coach at Sth Barwon who is now our defence coach is very keen as is a lot of our list mgt team.

Back to the rest of the phantom draft really surprised Morrish hasn't been taken by anyone very underrated for mine.

Strongly Agree with you on Morrish.

Absolutely. I think he's top 30. This draft has a lot of those 188-192cm utility types, but I'd rate Morrish as one of the best. Many players taken who shouldn't have gone ahead of him. I just couldn't justify taking all 3 of him, Rotham and Berry.

Not to mention Atkins or young Guthrie either.

I presume you mean Tom Atkins who has some fans but he will be a rookie if taken (players that small just about always are) although your club is keen on Stewart. I am a fan but I doubt Zac Guthrie gets drafted there isn't enough consistency in him yet to warrant a spot on an afl list although I defer to the guys on this thread who are much more knowledgeable about the drafts than me.

Top 30. I like. Like you just couldn't justify as have enough HB types but I have him closer to 50-60'ish. As an aside though how do you see Berry and Rotham scope to play up through the middle.

Geelong select Ryan Garthwaite

Ryan Garthwaite

DOB: 30/6/98, Height: 192cm, Weight: 83kg
Position: Key Defender
2016 Stats:

Profile: Rangey key defender who rarely gets beaten one on one. Garthwaite reads the ball well and positions himself well against his opponent. Also shows he can peel off against his opposition and become an intercept player. Has arguably the most unconvential kicking style in the draft pool but it is reliable. Second in the 2016 Murray Bushrangers B&F, Third as an U17 in 2015 and finished equal first in the clean hands test at the national combine.

Rational: Needed stocks in the key position/defender department for Geelong, and getting a very highly rated defender. Also considered Elliott Himmelberg and Patrick Kerr.

Ah i think no one saw it, Geelong bid on Ryan Garthwaite again haha.
Geelong select Patrick Lipinski

Patrick Lipinski

DOB: 17/7/98, Height: 188cm, Weight: 79kg
Position: Midfielder/Forward

2016 Stats:
WYMTPnj.png

Profile: Patrick Lipinski might just be the most athletic player in this year's draft pool and very happy to snap him up at Pick 54. Started off 2016 as a goal threat for the Knights, as he kicked a goal in each of his first 6 games. Then a move into the midfield beckoned as he has averaged 27 disposals a game in his last 3 games. So he has showed he's able to be thrown into the midfield and not be a one trick pony, which will set the alarm bells off to AFL clubs. A former elite basketballer, which has served some other great up and coming players of the past such as Pendlebury and Petracca. Possesses a great leap and pair of hands as well, is a former Eltham JFC player, which as produced players such as Nick Vlastuin and David Zaharakis. His promise and athleticism grabbed him the required 4 nominations to be able to attend the National Combine in Melbourne later in the year.

Rationale: Provides a great option for the future, with the ability to play both midfield and forward, while crafting his trade in the Geelong VFL side. Also considered Oscar Junker, Judah Dundon and Jack Henry. But got an absolute steal here at #69.

Both Garthwaite and Lipinski profiles up!

One pick away from the rookie draft it seems. I might do a bit of a review later on today, apologies in advance if I give anyone a poor grade.
Monocle - don't you have a final pick for Westcoast? We have 5 spots available. If you need help, there are a couple of local lads I would be happy to take in the senior draft and not risk the rookie.
