Consider in 2019 we traded down and took McAsey instead of taking Ash at 3.

So there's been posts lamenting us not taking a half back with pick 3.
And Will day in that same draft was drafted as a rebounding half back and started in that role for the first few years.

.
The problem is that it's poor value for money. Not all positions are created equally. You don't need top picks to get a decent half back. That's why that position is often used as dumping ground for people who failed in harder roles.

Can you imagine the outcry on here if we had pick 11 and used it on a HBF? People would be spewing.

With respect that’s effing crazy , attacking half back is one of the most important positions.

Half back flankers are seagulls playing one of the easiest roles on the ground. They're a dime a dozen. It's why someone that looks like an absolute spud playing mid/forward can go back there and look good.

Have you suddenly turned over a new leaf

TBF .. you have a rich history of derailing threads .. going all the way back to your epic nonsense discussions with Marty
I have until posters annoy me.

In all seriousness, there’s a shit load of threads that derail which is fine especially now as there’s nothing happening.

But in this one given the effort Bigman goes to and how his reports are appreciated by so many, it would be good if this one was left to the training reports and how the preseason is going.

Patrick Dangerfield played a hell of a lot of half back before we drafted him also. I remember Hamish and Rendell saying it was a game where he played in defence and was doing the kicking in on a windy day and kicked 2 out of bounds in a row but had the courage to also go for the same kick the 3rd time and hit it flush. That sealed the deal for them.

Jeff, IF the stat had any value ...the AFL Clubs would be requesting the info ...they measure everything

What people forget with CBA stats, are the various Midfield roles .....who gets the clearance stat, if Crouch gets first touch, and handballs 1 mtr to Rankine who drills it to Tex ?

Using that stat as a measurement of a player's worth .....well good luck ....the unfortunate tagger / blocker gets no credit (GWS McMullin ):(
M.Crouch's first touch when he doesn't have an opponent on him isn't where he is valuable, it's the contested first touch when he is surrounded by 2 or 3 opponents and he somehow has the strength to stand up in tackles and disposal the ball at an advantage. Sydney missed this type of midfield in the Grand Final which was why they chased him.

Is it irritating for you, when the tables are turned, and there's something that seems important to you and yet no one else gives af?

Just learn to scroll past the sh*t you don't want to read. Just like we've all become accustomed to scrolling past .. oh never mind

When did Sydney chase Crouch?

Charlie Cameron was the 2013 draft.

Jordan Dawson spent 6 years as a half back/wing before he forced himself into the midfield.

And again, we don't know what he'd have become if he stayed fit. In no sane universe is this a recruiting issue.
People forget how good Milera looked the year he was drafted, and what it looked like he could be.

That must have slipped by me
Maybe we tried to Jarryd Lyons him.

lol, good to see you aren’t holding on to any bad blood, shouldn’t step 6 of your anger management program be to let things go?

Now see what you’ve done.

You’re right, a simple suggestion to leave this thread to appreciate the great work of Bigman is too much to ask. As for irritating me, it hardly is, it’s actually for Bigman and those who appreciate his work I’ve made my post.

Anyway, I’ve offered my unreasonable suggestion, I’ll move on.

He was a perfectly fine pick #11, in what was thought to be the weakest draft in a decade. Stop trying to re-write history.

What .. what is this bad blood you speak of .. what is this paranoia that grips you?

I'm not sure I've done anything?

Good for you though, having a massive whinge about something most of us don't give a rats arse about is incredibly admirable (lol .. it's not)

And thank you .. again .. for telling us how we should think :thumbsu:

I'm not convinced, finished 10th in the BNF when he got a clean run in 2023. He is an average player. Maybe he would have been something more if he didn't decide to play a cruisy half back role.

For me he sits in the Andy Otten / Tom Doedee category. Very promising players that had a serious injury, made it back to AFL level but never hit the same heights. Ended up forging careers as reliable AFL footballers.

Milera was building nicely. Played 60 games across his first 4 seasons before the injury bug struck him and he has managed 30 games across the last 5 seasons. Should be a handy depth / role player for us as we push towards a premiership window opening up over the next 2-3 years.

Nank has been a very astute pick up. Has almost all bases covered in terms of a footballer now and should be a lock in our 22.

Hard to argue with this. His 2024 was very very impressive.

Part of me is concerned though - over the past few years we have seen young players have a really solid season and then regress - Sholl & Schoenberg in 2021, Berry in 2022, Jones 23.

Also feel like he is so much better suited to playing in the attacking half. Maybe they put him at half back in 2024 for development, but really think he would be a lot more valuable on the Wing / HFF.
