I had a 'source' back around 2000/2001 who was one of the groundsmen at Princes park. I was amazed at some of the info he would get for me and how often it was spot on eg: The Hamill trade and the amount he was being offered by the Saints etc. Most of it was gathered by standing around outside the clubrooms talking to guys like Goughie etc.

AFL clubs are like suburban and country footy clubs - there are a lot of people who love to give the impression they are 'in the know' and a lot of stuff does get leaked.

Yep. Also I've found a good way to get information is to stand somewhere near the group of people gathered around the players race at VFL games or training as many of them obviously learned to whisper on a helicopter.

Well that rattled the cage.

In theory it sounds great, however if I were doing those deals it would be exclusively with each club and things would sound peachy with each club. As a collective there are a lot of things which need to fall into place, so if you ended up with 3/5 so be it. If all those clubs knew what you were planning and the strength it would create to your list would they deal with you?

I have read a number of posters on here say we should just stick with the draft and go along our merry way, but, I think even though this may be our mantra, I would hope that we still have flexibility to change tack when the need arises. If a good player comes along like Kelly, then you must be prepared to see if you are a chance, although he may not be in our plans now, he is a 10 year player so when he does become a part of our plan, hey we already have him. His work rate and class could inspire others as Judd did. No problem handing over # 3 and then some.

Probably me, although I've only ever attended one Box Hill game with a mate.

Never did I learn the art of whistling - always comes out as a croaky whine that no one can understand.

edit: oops, can't whisper either.

Buyer beware on Schache IMO. Cant handle being away from home, leave of absence, then RE-SIGNS then cant even finish the year out and talk of being traded. That to me shows a softness between the ears and an indecisiveness that is a character flaw if you are wanting to make a career as a KPP. Im all for family and sympathy but the boys out there on the field are not going to be nice and the KPP more so and I see a guy whos gotten by on size during his junior career but if you wanna tangle with the best in that position in a professional sport especially against the gorilla 195cm+ players you need to be sure what you want. If he wanted to go hom he never should have re-signed. Needs to make a decision and commit. That will carry through to micro decisions not just large life macro decisions. Whats gonna happen when hes hesitating to give it off or have a shot.

That is if this big house of cards rumour is to be taken and gospel.

The thing about BB's trade is that its not actually a monster trade - its a series of calculated moves that cannot happen in isolation as they require the previous step to succeed - but they dont need to all happen at once like a normal "monster" trade would be involving a lot of clubs.

This is what makes it believable, whilst also reducing the probability of it occurring as written. It sounds like a pretty sound plan A - and doesn't fall too far from last 2 years of SOS trades:
- trade out a best 22 player for picks that will be of value in trades elsewhere (Yarran, Henderson, Menzel, Touhy)
- improve trade position where possible (2 seconds to WB for the a first round pick that landed us Charlie)
- trade for GWS players at a slight discount to market value but take on a salary cap dump - (Phillips, Plowman and Sumner - took the Lamb salary dump, Marchbank & Pickett - took the palmer dump)
