Well, we could do what we've always done. Draft midfielders and turn them into flankers or taggers.

Im not sure if anyone here remembers our former long serving club director Simon Wilson QC?

Since leaving the committee he has stated on multiple occasions that back in 2002/2003 when the AFL banished us from the draft, he campaigned within the club and wanted the club to take the AFL to court over the punishment handed down, believing;

a) the punishment was overly excessive, and

b) we legally were still entitled to retain our priority pick in 2002 (which he wanted reinstated retrospectively).

Given he is a QC, he believed that we had a rock solid case against the AFL - however he was overruled by fellow board members as they did not want to instigate any conflict with the AFL given the state of our club at the time and the assistance the AFL was providing to us (they did not want to bite the hand that fed them).

I find it sad that some 12 years later ... we are still worried about not wanting to stand up for what we are clearly entitled to by not wanting to rock the boat too much because the AFL have provided us with favourable prime time fixturing.

I'm referring to our drafting experts in Hughes and Rogers who were at pains on draft night to say:

"we expect him to start on a half forward flank but then step up into the midfield after a couple of preseasons".

Moral of the story, If you want a bloody onballer, start with the guys that are regularly accumulate 25-30 touches at the U18 championships.

Guys with neat skills but no running capacity aren't the guys you build a midfield around.
