Is there anyone who doesn't boo him ? He seems to inspire more dislike than any other player in the comp.

I wouldn't boo him, but I certainly don't like him, and why does he deserve respect ?

Because he left Essendon and didn't have the guts to speak to his team mates and tell them ?
Because he manhandles umpires and gets away with it ?
Because he was appointed captain of Port and failed to demonstrate any leadership qualities at all?

I'm a bit disappointed in that...the excuse seems to be "where's the club loyalty?", but in reality, Wanganeen was a Port Magpie long before he was a Bomber.

I suppose there's nothing really wrong with wanting to go home.

i think it was absolutly disgusting that they booed him, i was horrified

the guy is a champion and how quickly they forget how good a player he was for essendon, he won countless games for us (lets just forget the final in bris ok)

no matter what circumstances he left the club in you should never boo a champion, in particular a former champion of your club

Walshy,

I tend to agree, but all players who leave a club cop the boos when they play at that club again. A lot of Essendon fans feel he turned his back on the club.

I remeber Ports first game in the AFL against Collingwood at the MCG. Port had a cheersquad at the Punt Road end, and they booed, and jeered Nathan Buckley when he was kicking out. Buckley had rejected a big offer from Port to stay loyal to the Magpies. And these Port idiots booed him, because they considered him a former player. Nevermind that he used to play with a different club (for all intents and purposes) when he was with the SANFL (i.e thr port magpies). If anyone should boo him, it should be Brisbane fans.

Port fans would do the same thing as Bomber fans have done to Wanaganeen if, say, Primus left them and joined a rival club.

Dan

yes it happens but it still sucks !!!!

Personally I think Gavin's departure was staight down the line....after all he was coming home.

This is different to say a Buckley leaving Brisbane just because he didn't like the club.

Gavin grew up playing for Port and it was only natural that is where he should go. All the more reason not to boo him.

Yes Port fans do it too, but it still gives me the shits.

Well you need to get over it then. We put up with this every week. All it really means is that he is a great player and the Bummers didnt like the fact that he wanted to go somewhere else.

DAN -They don't always get booed when they returned.Stephen O'Rielly at FREO never got booed when he played against Geelong because he left Geelong to return home to WA.Yet Andrew Wills left for FREO and he gets booed all the time [don't know why,he was useless].

Sydney supporters don't boo Anthony Rocca.Thats because he was useless

"FIGHTING WITH ALL OUR MIGHT"

Walshy et al, you miss the point.

The issue is not that he decided to leave Essendon, it is, as CIK rightly points out, the manner in which he did it that angers many Dons supporters.

Absolute disgrace.

Gavin Wanganeen is a respectable man.
Sure, he may have manhandled people in the past, but who hasn't?
Look at James Hird on Micheal Wilson last night!
We elected Gavin as captain because he was the most loyal port man out there. He displayed leadership enough to help us reach the finals series and play against the kangaroos didn't he?

MODEM.

Trample Carey
So then we can hurdle his dead, bleeding body
---------------------------------------------

But, another thing!
It happens with everyone.
Take Buckley for example.
He wouldn't come back home from Collingwood so we booed him.
The collingwood fans will boo Saverio Rocca now that he's gone to kangaroos.

It's a part of footy and is a shame but it's always gonna happen.

So that is your only comment on the game?
I dislike supporters booing ex players, but it has always happened & always will unfortunately.
Anyway what did you think of the game & where are all your port mates that couldn't wait to post after your AC win, seems they are in hiding. As, pa1870, etc etc, started bragging too soon hey people.

There's two factors at play here:

i) The way the player left: if your club dumped him, or traded him for a good player, he tends to get treated a little bit more kindly than a player who leaves for money, leaves to go home, or leaves under ordinary circumstances (Wanganeen, Paul Hudson).

ii) There are also club issues involved. All clubs will boo some of the former players, but some fans are more inclined to hop into their ex-pats. Now, I'm not trying to start an argument here, but Bomber fans are world champs at it - it took until 2000 for Paul Salmon to get through a Hawthorn vs Essendon game without getting booed by some moron element in the crowd. There's other clubs too that give that sort of treatment, such as Carlton.

That proves you know **** all CIK. He got suspended for manhandling the umpire. And he was a great leader of Port.

I wasn't talking about the GF, you definitely had bragging rights there. I was talking about the game against us, port fans had plenty to say then, but are strangely quiet today, came back to bite them on the bum.

Please dont misquote me or use my name as a collective "Port are gonna kick everyone this year quoter "

Port did phenomenally well to win the Anset Cup G.F., they started off very well by beating Brisbane...but for realities sake, The form Essendon are " The " club and we performed reasonably against them..

As I have stated before the Ansett cup were practice Games...The real stuff will bring the cream to the top...suffice to say Essendon are pure Cream.....Port are still distilling...

Errr??? Dan"for all intents & purposes"25, Buckleys payslip whilst playing for Port Adelaide read...
The Port Adelaide Football Club

Please tell me...which football club from Port Adelaide is now in the AFL.....?

knew you wouldn't let that one go PA!!!!

Re: Judas, erm Wanganeen, James2 is absolutely right - we don't really resent the fact that he went back to SA and to his old "organisation". We really, really, really resent the way he did it. He lied to the EFC all through 96 saying that he'd discuss options at the end of the season when he really had no intention of doing anything of the kind. He just walked out without saying anything to the club that gave him a AFL/VFL Premiership medal and a Brownlow medal and all his mates. I think it sucked.

On the other hand I think it was a disgrace that Salmon ever got booed by anyone ever - great player, leader and human being IMHO.

Also James Hird DOES NOT manhandle umpires.

BTW, thanks for the "well played" respect we afforded you port fans after the AC... sheesh!

You don't need us to comment on the game after articles like this one by Michael Stevens in the Herald-Sun today http://afl.com.au/news/story_219356.htm - what a total w@nk that was

I thought that was a pretty good summary of the game, the only real problem I had with it was that he neglected to mention CCC, who I thought was one of the best players of the night. Damn, you people should be happy we let you have him.
