Yeah, well I'm not totally bagging him. The O.P. says we have a "curious relationship" with our coach and I'm having a dip at why he isn't revered by the Cat faithful

Speak for yourself. I certainly respect and revere the job he has done with the Geelong Football club.

Too many around here have short memories. Geelong was a basket case before Thompson arrived....a total basket case. This man, along with Costa and Cook, turned this football club from a joke to a power in the League within 10 years.

Name me one coach of the Geelong football club who could possibly claim the success Thompson has engineered so far in his career, not only in terms of on field success, but in the development of a culture that will ensure the ongoing success of this club.

There isnt one.

IF the Geelong faithful dont revere Thompson as you suggest, they will never revere anyone.

Gee, Bomber Thompson has adopted the same mindset and approach with the current Geelong playing group. He will stick by Tom Hawkins, Tom Lonergan, Mark Blake and Travis Varcoe. And, with Brad Ottens coming back in 6 weeks time, he will find the room to play Otto, Blake and Ottens as a 3 man ruck combination come September!!

THE GOVERNOR

Are we cloning Otto while he's on the shelf? :p

If you are all correct in your analysis of Thompson then please add some words to this thread, in case he reads it, to tell him to back of from having a go at Gary Ablett. From the man, Thompson, who once famously said that being the coach of Geelong was "just a job" ,the continual snipes at Gary are uncalled for and nasty.
If he was a real leader Thompson would understand how difficult it must be to choose between the club that you love and have grown up, with to the point that it is your life, and the promised $2m from another one. And, that perhaps Gary sees it as not just a job.

I think some of Bomber's comments have been totally blown of proportion, particularly the one after the Carlton game. It was obvious Bomber was angry at the lack of effort of the entire midfield as a whole, the media took that as a swipe at Gaz and ran with it. IMO, it was a bit like taking the footage of Bomber eating a salad roll in the coaches box before the Eagles game a couple of years ago, and inserting it in the footage of the game to make it look we were doing it so easy, he could afford to have a bite to eat. I noticed for a few weeks after that, Bomber was hesitant to even pick up a can of coke to have a drink during the course of a game in case he had a camera on him at the time. Was totally unfair to Bomber, and it made him look like he's extremely arrogant, which he isn't.

I'm sure Bomber is getting absolutely sick of being asked about Gaz, so some of his comments on the issue were probably tainted by the anger of being constantly asked about it. I'm sure every coach in the league would snap if they were repeatedly asked the same questions week in, week out.

Still can't go past Wells. Without him we'd never have the talent to develop in the first place.

That said I agree with the OP about praising Bomber (and all the other coaches too, I'm sure they have just as much as him to do with developing the players).

Must say about Lonergan, they perservered because they knew something about the person they were dealing with, his single mindedness to somehow recover from adversity and claim a position is to be admired.
He is now truely vital to Geelong premiership hopes, adding the necessary height to the defence, as Pods has to the forwards.

Further to this, I think some Geelong fans are a bit wary of Bomber because of his petulant display after keeping his job post 2006 (the "crappy process" comment), the Kent Kingsley thing, and his ridiculous and unnecessary baiting of Gary Ablett during the Gold Coast saga.

Mike Sheahan reported that Gary was swaying towards staying about 4-6 weeks ago. But is now reporting that since Thompson's continued taunts in the media, Gary Senior is now not happy and Junior may be shifting back towards heading north

Bomber has played the Gold Coast thing poorly, you must say. He's a good coach, but not in the Phil Jackson mould
what is the kent kingsley thing?? he didn't deserve too many games in his last season. you think he was hard done by? i agree with your comments but the kingsley comment seems out of nowhere, ???relevance, or am i missing something?

People tend to forget that Bomber Thompson's only VFL-AFL coach was the great Kevin Sheedy

You could also argue that Dennis Pagan was instrumental as well - Dennis was the senior coach at North whilst Bomber was the assistant. Dennis too had a pretty good talent for nurturing young talent.

It's not worth worrying about, mate.
It was just a stupid, categorically incorrect rumour that was floated by mischievous people with too much time on their hands.
They took a legitimate personal issue Thompson had, embellished it and turned it into this 'story' for their own pathetic ends.
Sadly some believed it.

Can we remove this?
go and talk about it in the relevant forum.
wouldn't u be bitter if your son said that "I want to be adopted by a richer father"?
Bomber has a full right to be bitter.
He has brought up Gary (as a footballer for 8 years).
He has reallly tried hard to take care of his players as we know.
He deserves at least to express the disappointment about his players.

from memory bombers the second longest serving coach in the clubs history, he built the side up from near nothing and has created a champion team.

on the ablett matter, i think what his saying is being taken out of context by the media. i think he believes that gary is likely to leave, and this is effecting the "tone" on which his comments are coming out. if this whole gold coast debacle wasn't around, i think his comments would have been interpreted as "challenging gary to do more" rather than "having a go at gary".

If Bomber just kept his mouth shut then he wouldn't be taken out of context!! It's something that people like Walls and Parkin have been telling him to do for the whole season!!

Just a one line answer for every GA question, and the problem goes away until the end of the season

I respect, and to some degree understand what you're saying. But I totally disagree.

We have probably the only coach who will say what he thinks, even if he regrets it later (and who, when in that situation, will also admit publicly to making a mistake). What you see is pretty much what you get, and I find his press conferences a breath of fresh air.

The man is passionate and a true believer, and I have no problems with him saying what he thinks up front rather than dropping subtle hints for the roiling masses to interpret as they see fit.

But to each their own. I'm just glad he's ours'.
