Bomber Thompson has been at the Cats 8 Years. Anything less than a premiership this year and he will certainly be sacked. Thoughts?

It would be a smart move to sack a coach who has built a list that gets you to a clear position on top of the ladder if you went out in straight sets.

It would be a very Geelong move.

Port should have done it with Williams.

Really?...when do you think was the last time Geelong sacked a coach?

Not the actual act of sacking the coach - more finding away to **** things up when things are rolling along beautifully.

he has done well, built a list capable of doing great things. They stuck with him through last season which was a bit of an aberation, but in the next year or so he would really want to win a flag.

I've heard that Bomber Thompson has refused the club's overtures about disregarding an understanding he and the club arrived at earlier this season about the extension of his contract not happening until after the season finishes.

Bomber Thompson = Essendon 2008 coach, IMHO.

Or maybe he just wants to focus on winning a flag.

You spend 8 years building a list that can genuinely challenged for a flag and then you chuck it to go to a team that is a few senior retirements away from full on hitting rock bottom?

The man isn't an idiot.

Its been suggested that Geelong are trying to resign him now because they are worried about Essendon. Bomber has apparantly refused, which is very interesting

This is equalisation, reward for mediocrity, success managed AFL. Coaches don’t get sacked for not winning flags. Coaches get sacked for losing the confidence of the financial backers. In GT’s case they get sacked for breakups with the president and the lack of a premiership gets blamed – in the same breath as a statement that he would still have been sacked had they won the flag. Then again, no one bases anything on how St. Kilda operates.

If he's been there 8 years then he has 7 years remaining in which to bring a flag before he becomes less than average.

Simple isn't it?

I thought Bomber was in trouble at the start of the year and said so

But right now the Cats are playing so well to a plan and they are committed to it, it may not be a flag this year but I can’t see bomber getting the flick unless they went out in straight sets.

And I think they will be playing in the GF.

Yeah the coach isn't important at all as to a teams success, makes perfect sense. Never mind he practically raised the players that are currently playing for the Cats. His done nothing.

(sarcasm)

It's all about the sustainability of the football club. Thompson should be judged on his success over all 8 years, not just one year. If he doesn't win a premiership this year, he never will.

The only difference between this and last year is Neil balme. Balme should be given full credit for the success of the cats this year.

Well, he spends 8 years getting experience under his belt and possibly winning a flag this year before moving to the club he played for, captained to a premiership, and loves. Makes a lot of sense to me.
