It doesn't need to be relevant, just needs to be good. Lionel Richie, Bryan Adams, heck, even Tom Jones, are hardly relevant, yet are the better acts of the last decade.

But let's compare. Black Eyed Peas have endless hits and absolutely sucked.
Gang of Youths have greater popularity than you have given them credit for, but don't come close to the BEP's. They were great as the NRL entertainment.

Some people said The Killers sucked too, but doesn't mean were right.
Nah look, opinions opinions etc etc. I'm not even a big Gang of Youths fan, but watching them objectively I find it hard to believe anyone could have thought they were terrible. Not saying you said they were, but there wasn't anything bad about their performance unless you absolutely detest rock music going in.

NRL entertainment only looks good because its at night, any band would look good if you had lights smoke lasers and fireworks to distract as part of the atmosphere. But got to agree the sound come through ten times better tonight than yesterday with BEP and Barnesy, the sound was shocking yesterday not sure if that's the broadcasters fault or the venues.
Nothing will beat the Killers last year! Never seen anything that good!!
I don't know what would be better, Radiohead, Pearl Jam, Blur, Jane's Addiction from the Strays Era! (the vocals would be great at the G')
As for a hard rock band, maybe Van Halen, The Hellacopters!

If the AFL dropped the BEP and just had Jimmy Barnes, would have been good. Hard to make it look good during the day. But I feel the NRL had a better pre game game this year. AFL was better last year with the Killers. End of the day, it doesn't really matter.

The people saying that were basic bogans to be fair.
Rod Stewart could have been an amazing choice once upon a time. Might be a bit too old and weathered to leave out in the sun for fifteen minutes nowadays, but the number of hits he could roll out is as good as anybody. Plus of course you'd still have those "too old/irrelevant" complaints from some.
