you dislike the Australian of the Year? Avast ye unpatriotic Curr.

Can someone actually explain what Goodes did to gain / earn Australian of the Year?

Sure he's a good footballer but I can't recall a good footballer being that high up in the criteria before. So it must be something he does outside football, and it would obviously involve his role as an indigenous leader.

I'm not a big believer in elevating sports stars as national figures. I think there are a lot more deserving people who make real sacrifices in life for others but some political steering committee wants to gain more votes so they pick the person who they think will deliver that instead.

So when All Australian of the Year and duly appointed Representative Leader of the Free World Goodes all 191cm ripped 90kg of muscle lip reads a 13 year old girl of 50kg and grand stands at the MCG and makes security escort and embarrass on national TV a 13yr old minor. I thought that lacked class and could have been dealt with differently and still got the message across.

This and all those hand outs / favourable tribunal interpretations the AFL has gifted Goodes and the Swans over the years is why I boo and will continue to boo!!!!

Yeah I booed he can play but I have no respect for the man he is a gutless sniper has been all his life.

When they introduced the rule to stop players taking out other players legs by sliding in with their feet/knees first they produced a DVD with examples. B & FAIREST Goodes provided more than half of the examples on his own!!!!

In the 2012 GF he nearly ended Rioli's career by a dog act but luckily Rioli's sense and reflexes avoided Goodes's disgraceful attempt.

Your true champions have all bases covered and Goodes definitely is not in that category.

With the 13 year old girl 'racist' saga I lost a lot of respect for him. Then to get Aus of the year, seems a bit silly. I'm not sure his fierce stance really achieves much, all he really did was persecute a young girl for calling him an ape. If he was a strong character and simply brushed it off I feel that he would have earned a lot more respect from most Australians and furthered the indigenous cause.

Still, overall a terrific player and an impressive person. An icon of the game. However I feel his response to that situation was attention seeking and self serving. I think he made a situation out of a minor issue just for the sake of doing so. Racism is not rife in football, in fact, I'd go as far to say as it is not even a problem. If that is considered a 'terrible racist attack' then the game is in very good shape.

He said the face of racism is that of a 13 year old girl, irrelevant saying it's not her fault, he has labeled HER the face of racism, and it was bloody pathetic!

The amount of people who completely failure to comprehend his point here is truly staggering. His entire point was that the face of racism was a girl raised in a society that failed to educate her to know better, and that's the reflection on the society. Not that the girl is the source of all hatred and evil.

And that's exactly what Goodes said in his media conference after the event. There's this incredible revisionist history around this that shows how easily misinformation can spread. Goodes said everyone should support the girl and use the event as a way to educate people of how certain words and insults carry a history and meaning that can make them extremely hurtful to those of colour.

Meh, big deal. A lot of the great players get booed.

I think it was partly because a) he's been such a great player; and b) he's been such a protected species over his career.

As much as Steve Waugh and Pat Rafter?

So players should just put up with racial abuse. That's your point?

His entire point was that no matter how successful and respected you are , it is fine to pull out the "victim" card when it suits. Terrible example to set.

The crowd was being racist by going 'ape', which in turn caused the latte-sipping sweater vest-wearing Sydney PC twitterati to arise from their mother's basement and be outraged

I find it staggering how people can choose to be this ignorant. How has society not moved past the 1950's and White Australia?

News flash: When he gets racially abused, that's not "pulling out the victim card". He IS the victim.

That whole 13 year old girl thing was almost one of the worst ever jokes told by the AFL. She had no idea that calling him an 'ape' was racist, in fact I didn't know that was a derogatory term for an Indigenous person, and I am in my 30's. I am sure he copped more flack than I can understand on the field, but to be praised for bouncing it all on that little girl was really low.

True...Imagine the trauma a fully grown man who is a football star/millionaire must go through after a 13 year old girl yells out 'ape' during a football game.

Poor guy.

He has been through so much...

Imagine someone called you an animal name.

Can we nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize?

The problem I have with the Goodes incident I didn't even know that 'Ape' was a racist comment, at least from where I'm from I'd heard a multitude of insults towards aboriginals growing up but this was a new one on me.. Heck I could have accidently called the bloke at footy one because he is a big hairy bloke, fair enough it obviously means something deeply to him but then all of a sudden you are branded as 'the face of racism' across the entire bloody country over a simple misunderstanding.

In all seriousness on the racial abuse incident with the girl, sure Goodes could of shown some resilience however it was a great thing that he did because it will forever impact on Australian culture. One he highlighted that racial abuse is not on and two that the term ape is indeed extremely derogatory which a lot of people at the time were not aware of. We can thank Adam Goodes for doing what he did that night because his actions resulted in a valuable lesson to all and will change of society for the better. This IMO is a big reason why he got AOTY.

I reckon he does look a bit like an ape though, he's big, dark and hairy. I also reckon Paul Little looks like an old chimpanzee.

Can we somehow blame Eagles' fans for this? That get-out-of-jail card has worked quite well in the past.

Nah, that's old and obsolete. We need to be blaming Essendon, Essendon supporters (and especially James Hird) these days. They're the cause of every problem, apparently.

The number of people who are willfully, arrogantly and proudly stupid in this thread, unfortunately does not stagger me.

What does stagger me is why this thread is allowed to continue.
