On Friday night when geelong ran out onto the ground the boos that reverberated around the mcg was something most had never heard before. It was like the cats were an interstate side as the boos drowned out any cheering from their fans. The boos continued throughout the night when they kicked the ball into play and on other occasions throughout the night. While the roar of the tiger army was something to behold I reckon the booing was something I've never heard before on that scale.
Where do people sit on this? I've heard lots of complaints from cats fans and even heard a tiger supporter on 3AW tonight say she didn't like it.
I for one liked it, it made for a very intimidating experience for the cats players and who knows may have effected some of them especially the younger ones.
I imagine it will happen again in the prelim to the Giants or eagles so what do people think? To boo or not to boo?
I think it's great and I've never understood why people get so offended over it. Any professional athlete should be able to block it out anyway so it's a good litmus test for mental fragility

I don't get offended but think it's a bit, I dunno, childish unless there is a reason for it, like Carlton with Milburn or if someone belts a bloke in the game. Or if a player is a regular dickhead like Ballantyne or Greene. It's a bit of fun, probably does up those players anyway.

Crowds from all teams have started booing oppo set shots. Meh like it makes a difference.

At one point on Friday it was quiet when the cats had the ball then when Motlop got it the boos came all of a sudden. I didn't get it.

So in Australia things are a little different. Unlike other countries fans here believe they're entitled to a seat whereas in other countries you miss out then stiff shit. Now as for athletes if they're booed they either call it racism or come out claiming to have a mental related issue so people back off. Again happens nowhere else.

Not implying people fake mental issues but there's no surprise that the ones who have been coming out with them (bar Buddy a few years ago + he wasn't booed) have been booed by opposition fans in general and their own fans deservedly due to playing like shit which would obviously take a toll on someone who clearly can't take it.

Booing is part of the game... If more of your club's supporters rocked up and your booing is having an influence, you boo.... are we really getting to the stage where the crowd has to sit in silence or be so sterilised that they cant cheer or boo.... ffs, what a joke.

If a group of 22 players cant put up with some booing at the football they probably shouldn't be AFL players...
This isn't an Auskick match, this is full grown mens final's football... cant handle the heat? get out of the kitchen.

So only home teams are allowed to boo?
So as an away team you shouldn't boo the opposition? Is that what you are saying?
I'm saying it wasn't fair that at our home game 80,000 classless 'supporters' booed our players as they ran out onto the ground.

I thought that was because they had mistaken Motlop for Parfitt, who had accidentally clobbered Houli with late spoil. Like Zempalis a few years back who would regularly mix up the couple of indigenous players we had (Stokes, Christensen, Motlop).

I think there might have been a few 'neutrals' who were also happy to get stuck in to us and join in the booing, in the Afl members for example.

What number of supporters are we allowed to use to boo then? 40,000? 60,000? I'll pass it on to the club.

34,892 would be acceptable.

It's mostly theatre. I'd be surprised if it actually affected the players, but having never played sport in front of 95K I can't say for sure.

Maybe it was a Stanton boo from Geelong people. He seems to be on the nose down there.

Well we probably play you at the MCG next year for our home game so I'll allocate our supporters a number.

You reckon your supporters will turn up next time? Would have thought they'd do it for a final but clearly not.

I hate it when highly paid athletes are made to feel sad by a bunch of people who they don't know.

I say we don't allow crowds into the games anymore so nobody gets upset.

Especially with all the mental health issues. I'm still furious they keep scores. Why do we need a "loser" ffs?

Btw I don't really have any contacts for your club so can Sydney supporters please pass on that only 34,892 of their supporters are allowed to boo Geelong this weekend at Geelong's home game. Any more than that will upset their supporters.

I'm surprised this has reached a discussion point, but based on some of the comments in here, maybe I shouldn't be.
It's called an atmosphere, for those that thought this was bad, I would steer clear of the South American soccer league or the Croatian league.
AFL is at times, maligned for having little to no atmosphere but then when a supporter base actually take it up a notch and make it a cauldron atmosphere, we get some people starting to complain that it's a bit much.

"Away fans should realise they are the away team"
Please. Most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.

Harden up. I was at the game, right between the Richmond Cheer Squad and the infamous "Grogg Squad" and I didn't witness anything where I thought to myself, wow that's a bit much.
Bit of background about myself, spend the home and away season on level two and I don't drink, so I think I'd be a good judge of what is acceptable behaviour.

There are always going to be some flogs, but that's with every supporter base.

Be surprised if anyone boos the Cats to be honest.

I actually think that they should bow, followed with a polite clap - you can't be dissin the home team

The Adam Goodes booing was quite clearly racist based and always from a racist minority. It's disrespectful, and borders on disgraceful, to have fans boo injured players.

Without starting another shit fight - it is quite plausible it was Adam Goodes that was disliked not the colour of his skin as evidenced by the lack of sustained booing of other indigenous players across the league and before you call me racist, I'm indigenous

Oh FFS, I have never seen a more purile debate in over 40 odd years of following football.
You would think that after holding one of the games longest wining streak, that they would show a little bit of grace when that finally got broken, but no, all we get are petulant, bratish , whines that most 12 year olds would find embarrassing.
"Oh they were louder than us and they booed us".....
"There were more of them that bothered to turn up, and that intimidated us"......
"It's so not right when it's our finsl, not there's"....
Fair Dinkum I've never seen more pathetic carry on over a football game. I heard that "Anne" on the radio, and it speaks a lot that she couldn't provide any specific examples of abuse.
Simply, Geelong have been far to arrogant towards Richmond of late, and it's that arrogance that did em in on Friday. They got found out and they can't handle it, and sooked it big time .
Grow up Cat Fans, you're embarrassing yourselves.

I ****ing love booing. I jeer everyone: opposition players, opposition supporters, umpires, rule infringements (real or imagined), I'll boo my own players and supporters if I feel like it, idgaf. Making dumb noises in public spaces is awesome, get into it you flogs.

The booing coincided with the Collingwood incident and persisted until he left the game, not retired. It was downright disgraceful.

Other indigenous players have been booed. Winmar and Thomas immediately come to mind. Farmer copped it a bit.

Classless act from a classless supporter base devoid of any success whatsoever for decades.

Respect that you are the away supporters.
Someone need some tissues?

I can't believe it either. I mean, I literally can't believe that the lack of games being played at the end of the season (due to finals and byes I assume) means that people have nothing better to do with their time other than whinge about things that if they had a functioning life they wouldn't have time to think about these petty things for one second.
The day we have to stop booing is the day the game died

As A spectator you must do your bit to make the opposition feel uncomfortable and put them off their game.
Well yeah, exactly.
