Couldn't find a thread on this. If there is one then can the mods please delete this one. I just thought that Bower's efforts on Buddy were amazing and should give us much inspiration looking to 09. He didn't seem in any way overawed and imo beat Buddy on the night. The only area where he looked in a little trouble was the one on one mark in the first quarter. He seems to have so much pace and most importantly the ability to react quickly with his reflexes. Haven't followed Buddy's stats throughout the season but wouldn't have thought he would have had too many games with less scoring shots.

one on one Buddy was too strong

but on the lead, Buddy was checked by Bower and more than likely spilled the mark or was spoiled

another pre-season for Bower to get him stronger will be great for him

was very happy with the Mini-Cattogio!!!

One on one Buddy is too big/strong for anyone, so no disgrace there.

Was good for Bower to get that kind of exposure, too. Big crowd, big TV audience, the man everyone was talking about (Buddy)... it got the commentators talking about Bower, and actually taking notice of what he did.

He did fine. Is very young and has plenty of scope for improvement.

Bowers got a great future and i agree broke even if not beat buddy sat nite.Consider its his second game back after a serious shoulder injury he still doesnt look 100% and his body size looks smaller compared to earlier in the year.(Unable to do full on weights i think?)
I rate Bower our most important backman because of how vesatile he is.
Imagine Waite or Thorton on Buddy sat nite he would of kicked 8 at least considering how much ball was cominig in.

Our backman in order of importance
1.Bower
2.Waite
3.Jamo
4.Carlos
5.Scotland
6.Carrots
7.Thorton
39.Saddington

good thread and good responses.

should be a backman we rely on for 10 years. has all the attributes to become a real tight checking back but also shows he can play with a bit of dash when he gets the ball. When its buddy a good measure of his output is possessions and marks and he didnt get too many - around 12 - 15 i think with not a huge amount of marks (6???). The one thing that stood out was he was so nervous. You could tell when he did everything right to get to that ball first in the 1st quarter but then dropped the chest mark. Good signals though.

I really like the looks of this guy. He was doing great early in the year until he got injured (broken wrist wasn't it?) and you'd think he would fill one of our key defensive roles for a while now. We may have traded Kennedy to get Judd, but we should have no regrets whatsoever we held onto Bower, who I didn't have a big impression on until this year. Not that I was sceptical though.
Buddy is amongst the best forwards in the competition and as people have said, he did a great job.

Thought he was terrific on Saturday night, and IMO, he has been the biggest improver at our footy club over last year. Competed really well with Buddy, and no way lowered his colors to him.

With another preseason under his belt, we may well have found a very dependable backman.

Liam Pickering was standing behind me during the first half on Sat night and we had a chat to him, as Bower is one of the players he manages

- he knew early on in the week that he had Buddy
- he was never mentioned at all last year to be put up for the Judd trade
- Pickers thinks he has great talent

Shoulder.

Players with current, past or potentially future shoulder issues: Emu, Tex, CJ, Jammo, Cam, any others?
Bower's is a little different in that it was an AC joint. Don't tend to have ongoing gissues like what the others with "lose" shoulders may have.

As for his form on Buddy, I thought he was outstanding. Given it was his second game back from the injury it bodes well for next year.

He and Jammo will form the backbone of our defence for the nexy 7-10 years.

With some better midfield pressure things might have been very different on Sat night.

Until recently, I assumed that Bower was going to be a very good 3rd tall.

It now occurs to me that he could hold down CHB. What does everyone think? Can Bower hold down CHB? He is obviously good, is he big enough? Is that his best role?

He could very well hold down CHB. As others have said, he's a very capable defender who can play on key forwards, as well as provide dash when need be. He hasn't really been big enough yet, but as others have said, with a full pre-season in the gym, he should be bigger and stronger next season. That's just about his only weakness at this moment. Exciting times ahead with Bower, CHB could very well become his own from next season onwards.:)

He seems to have a very good nack of not giving away those soft or unnecessary frees too.

Dosnt get caught tugging on jumpers or chopping arms, dosnt lose his cool when the ball has hit the ground and his opponent is between him and the ball

I agree . Bower is tall enough to play CHB , once he gets wider he'll be a big unit.. And he seems to be getting himself into good positions (body2body) this season, so hes reading the play well.. And of course the dash , the boys got dash...

Bower = Versatile

Against Hawthorn could of played on
Roughhead
Williams
Brown
Osbourne etc
Resting ruckman ?

Players like Paul are had to find. His first half of the year was outstanding(watch the B&F).
Im a huge fan of him and Jamo because their young/give 100%/Have poise/and go about there work with no fuss.

He earned U-18 AA at CHB so you'd hope so!

Bower and Waite are similar in that they like to run and break lines, Austin preferring to stay back and stop more ball. I think Bower and Austin can work up a very good partnership at CHB. Has anyone else noticed his spoiling? It's first class - powerful and accurate.

Bower gave me heart attacks last year, but this year he has been nothing but class. A future B+F winner and AA imo....he has all the attributes.

Bloody good on you Paul!

I was very impressed in his performance on Franklin. His efforts to spoil combined two elements - one they were effective, and two they were (mostly) legal.

To see both elements at once is very uncommon, and left me very impressed. What's his disposal/decision making like offensively?

Speed, agility, decent recovery and long arms. Body strength will come. Got a bit of help, but no more than most/all teams put up against Franklin.

Always good to see younger players come through....

^^^^ Him and Shaun Grigg :thumbsu:

Un-Australian??? What hoggwash. All the comments made by Carlton supporters on Bower vs Buddy were insightful and interesting. Then I read this rubbish!
If a cricketer is on 99 (regardless of the state of the game) Pointing, Waugh, Taylor, Border etc etc set a field to MAKE HIM EARN THAT FINAL RUN, it is not gifted. This means that you are also calling these great Australians, un-Australian.
Clarkson was protecting Buddy's foothold on the Coleman medal, and more importantly your players were kicking it to Fev and not the others, so any coach would be stupid not to put players back there.
God, I have never seen such crap that has been said by many of your supporters over the past 2 days. If this is what you are going to dwell over (and not the fact that your side has exciting times ahead) it is no wonder that you were on the bottom of the ladder for so long and for Ratten to insite this stupid behaviour is unprofessional and irresponsible.
