Un-Australian??? What hoggwash. All the comments made by Carlton supporters on Bower vs Buddy were insightful and interesting. Then I read this rubbish!
If a cricketer is on 99 (regardless of the state of the game) Pointing, Waugh, Taylor, Border etc etc set a field to MAKE HIM EARN THAT FINAL RUN, it is not gifted. This means that you are also calling these great Australians, un-Australian.
Clarkson was protecting Buddy's foothold on the Coleman medal, and more importantly your players were kicking it to Fev and not the others, so any coach would be stupid not to put players back there.
God, I have never seen such crap that has been said by many of your supporters over the past 2 days. If this is what you are going to dwell over (and not the fact that your side has exciting times ahead) it is no wonder that you were on the bottom of the ladder for so long and for Ratten to insite this stupid behaviour is unprofessional and irresponsible.

Crikey, wait till the club directors find out we sat around on the bottom of the ladder because a few posters on a footy forum became "disgruntled" with Hawthorn's game plan. Ouch.

Speed, agility, decent recovery and long arms. Body strength will come. Got a bit of help, but no more than most/all teams put up against Franklin.

Hi, since the rest of my fellow Carlton fans are busy squabbling about something, let me have a go at answering your lucid and sensible post!

One of the initial things we most liked about Bower was his run off the backline. Whilst he earned U-18 AA honours at CHB, he almost plays like a winger or flanker sometimes. In his first season and a bit, this willingness to run and take on the opposition made him look very very very stupid sometimes. He'd charge forward with the ball before he knew what he was going to do with it, and end up doing u-turns or getting caught holding the ball. But early this year, he was more confident and the Blues backline started to look a bit better, and he did some really nice things running it out with Waite, another lanky athletic backman who has the odd brain explosion.

His skills by hand and foot are fine, as far as I know. Hasn't done anything to make me think he's at either end of the great-awful spectrum in that regard.

His one-on-one work has been very solid this year. He toweled up Travis Cloke early in the year, not bad for a 19yo. Obviously there's plenty of strength to be added to his frame, but I think he'll be big and strong enough to go with anyone but the most powerful forwards. His match-up on Buddy was a good one, because whilst he couldn't go body-on-body with Buddy, he did have the agility and speed at ground level to stay on him where a bigger, stronger guy might not have.

Basically, there's a lot to like about Bower. From memory he was a ~late teen draft pick, so definitely "rated". He's young, and exciting, and his willingness to take things on will develop from a cause for heart failure to a fantastic asset very soon. A summer in the strong room and I think you'll be looking at one of our three core defenders for a long time to come.

Probably not beat him on the night. Buddy is a gun and to get the honours over him you obviously have to play very, very well.
Got his 9 shots on goal again, but Bower certainly made him earn some of them.
Still some improvement left in Bower, especially with 1 on 1s, but he'll get there.

I love these comments.

Buddy worked his arse off.......but was matched for athleticism.

He was stronger than Bower in the one-on-one contest, but when the ball was out in front or on the lead Bower more than matched Buddy.

With the game going the way it was, Buddy could have had 10 goals. To say he stopped trying after the ton lacks intyelligence and clearly shows you didn't watch the game.

No surprises though..........Hawks fans clearly unable to concede anything........I read in another post where "Sewell smashed Judd".......kept him to 31.

Bower did about as much as any other player could on Buddy, wasnt going 100% but he was still trying to

Buddy was hurt by a lack of preperation for the game (did not train all week) and hawthorn wising up and giving Roughead some confidence, you couldnt ask more from Young Bower

That was Bowers second game back from shoulder surgery which had him off for over 2 months.

Is it so hard to say he did well without all the excuses?

I wonder what their take on "Fev on Croad" is?

To have 7 kicked on you in a half is a little embarrassing.......but maybe Croad wasn't trying either.

Maybe Croad "smashed" him in the first half and then didn't try so Fev got 7 cheapies in the second when it was all over.........about right?

I wonder how they rate Gibbs 32 possies and 5 goals contributed vs his various opponents (Osborne/Ellis - 0, Ladson - 6, Mitchell 1, Dew 2, Lewis - 1) combined 10 with 2 goals contributed?

I'm sure they won that duel too.

i agree that bowyer did a good job on buddy.
but i dont agree that bowyer is better or more important than jamison and waite.
i have him at third, with jamison and waite before him.

Ive come to dislike Thorton and fisher this year too!

Bower had a great game the amount of ball coming down into the Hawks forward half Buddy could easily have kicked 10+. He is improved out of sight and I am looking forward to next season when he has another full preseason under his belt. We are building a good solid back line and your first line of attack is always the back half.

I agree, he did a fantastic job for such a young developing guy and I'm glad he was given the chance instead of just throwing someone like Waite onto him. In the end it's given him some nice recognition too.

Also good because after watching the Hawthorn game my father finally converted to the bandwagon...he's been anti-Bower for a while....

Bower's handball technique is pre-Sheedy old school, he hits the ball so that it spins forwards instead of backwards. It looks kind of awkward, as does his running style, but it doesn't negatively impact the effectiveness.

One of his best attributes is the speed at which he can change direction while running, Waite also very good at this.

Also, some of his body work on the man mountain Bradshaw in round 21 was amazing for someone who was giving away so much strength in the contest!

He was pick 20 in 2005 behind Murph @ 1 and JK @ 4 (all three were U18 AAs )
