And the market has proven that no club was willing to give Brad the salary for a band 1 compensation pick
Correct.

Not sure about that. When it comes to player salaries no one really knows.
I just reckon Kelly was basing his stance on what we pay our top paid players.

Sorry I can't agree with your logic, Ryder when fit is a dominant ruck as well as a weapon around the ground and much the same applies to Rowan Marshall, not quite as dominant in the ruck but great around the ground and one of the most skilled ball users of the current AFL ruckmen. If your 3rd line ruck can't beat Pickett maybe you're not as good as you think and your list has issues.
If they've rolled the dice list wise and it doesn't pan out, they have to wear it. There's no injury excuses.
Not sure about that.
I think we saw the deals clubs were offering to genuine star players and assumed Brad was in that category
We thought "yep, Brad Crouch, elite midfielder, easy $850k deals"
We missed the bit where Brad isn't an elite midfielder

$850K is a certain band 1 compensation and B.Crouch isn't elite, he is a sold B+ midfielder and $750K would have gotten a band 1 compensation which Daniher received. Not sure about that.

Paul Hunter shouldn't have ever played AFL.
Brad isn't worth Band 1, i accept that. What i can't accept is that Joe Daniher and Zac Williams ARE deemed worthy of Band 1.
If Band 1 is the answer for those 2, the wrong question is being asked.
They were both offered $100-150K more by the club to attract them and make sure the contract isn't match which is the point of FA so the $750-800K was enough to trigger the band 1 contract, Saints knew they only had to up the length of the contract and we wouldn't match since B.Crouch was after 2-3 more years on the same pay which we rightly weren't willing to offer.Brad isn't worth Band 1, i accept that. Yep this is truth. Personally I think that he is good enough to earn that, but the market shows he isn't. If he played at a vic club maybe he would've due to the higher profile. The drugs thing could've cost us more than it cost him.And the market has proven that no club was willing to give Brad the salary for a band 1 compensation pick
Indeed, like last week.... but it may be too late.Yeah Saints will improve when they have a competitive ruck again. Hunter isn't getting it done.
they are missing Ryder & Marshall
The Saints player attitude has stunk for most of the year.I agree they're important, however surely they're not the difference between Saints being a finals side and once getting belted by 80 points repeatedly.

No 1 Ruckman and No.2 Ruckman out?
How do you reckon we'd look with no O'Brien and if you want to take it to the enth degree no Strachan?
Not to mention one of their better mids and ball users in Gresham who was averaging 28.5 disposals and 7 clearances a game before tearing his achilles early in round 3.
Don't think he was worried as much about the per year $ figure, more about how long the contract was. The #1 priority he had was getting a 5 year deal because of his injury history and that's where the Saints played us because they knew we had no intention of giving Brad that sort of lengthy deal (and also why our bluff on matching was foolish). Not sure about that.

how many teams succeed without a ruck man of any kind?
The closest I can think of is the 2016 Bulldogs going through the finals wth the makeshift combination of Roughead and Boyd. Hard to think of another one.
Yep, but Boyd is at least 6'6"The closest I can think of is the 2016 Bulldogs going through the finals wth the makeshift combination of Roughead and Boyd. Hard to think of another one.
I thought Sloane (Saints were very keen and given what they gave Hill and Hannebry) and Jenkins (Brisbane offer him more) signed on for lesser money? B.Crouch was already on $650K here, hence he was listed as a RFA and anyone would have thought the industry would have offer a RFA player $100-150K more to attract the FA player and to make sure the contract isn't matched. The problem was the Saints smartly knew we weren't going to match on length so they offer him the same money he was on with an extra 4th year and a clause for the 5th year which would have very easy target.
its clearly not as simple as that though. We were played like the new in town rubes we were.
hard not to admire STK a little in retrospect
Admire them?
All they did was play it compeletely straightforward.
Lets not pretend they were playing 8D chess with us here.
They knew we didn't want Brad, they knew he had little real interest from other clubs, they paid what they had to in order to get him to sign and not a cent more.
I'm sure there was news report we offered him 3 years (but that was before his indiscretion) but he wanted 5.weren't going to match on length? we weren't going to match on anything.
We pushed Brad out the door.
Lets stop pretending the Saints maneuvered us with a super tricky offer that we couldn't match.
We simply didn't want Brad.
An additional $100K to get him over as a FA on top of $650K was very plausible, that's why Daniher and Williams received an additional $100-150K to get them over as a FA (Williams got more but that's Carlton for you......).I wanted pick 2 as much as anyone else but truth is Brad is just not rated highly at all. Plenty in the media were saying this back then, I'm on board now. It's clear what Nicks thinks of him.
You're right, there was no conspiracy here, this is just the reality of how Brad is rated within the industry. No club was prepared to give a big deal.
Some still have their heart set on pick 2 or even a trade, the Daniher/Williams situations don't help. Time for everyone to move on.
