Brad Scott Sacked

Why do it now?

They've got Richmond (L), WC, Carlton, Melbourne then a bye. Logical time to do it was after going 0-4 in that stretch. Alternatively, if losing to Richmond on Friday as they did is egregious then why is he getting sacked on a Tuesday? Maybe they had the gun loaded then held off because of Daniher's passing.

If they get a sugar hit and beat WC and one of Carlton/Melbourne what will they have achieved? Brad Scott was right last week when he said if they lose their next 3 (being Richmond through Carlton) would they really be in a different position to if they win all 3.
Made a decision on the weekend and delayed it by a day due to Daniher.

What were they supposed to do, pretend he's still the coach for another 2 weeks.

I cant for the life of me understand how "Essendon Person" is a factor in anything whatsoever. It shouldnt even be a thought process. In terms of picking a head coach MAYBE you can think about getting a "club person" as a non-Vic club so you understand the impact travel has but that's about the extent of it, for Big Vic, it's completely redundant.

Welsh comes across as just as bad as Sheedy to be honest and I thought once they finally turfed Dodo that the club was finally on board with what's required. How could any new coach take the position knowing they can only stomach about half a year of properly rebuilding...

I don't see anything wrong with it

Listening to the Andrew Welsh press conference is a stark reminder that nobody in this industry has an IQ more than 2 SD above the mean. It’s sales people at every level.
It was like hearing someone in Grade 4 do a public speaking presentation for the first time.

Is there anyone in the Essendon early 2000s boys club who doesn't have this blind spot that anyone outside the club can see?

Case in point Lloyd. Hasn't been shy at all in his criticism of Brad Scott... IIRC he's gone with the 'no visible gameplan' critique this year.

But then when it's a premiership teammate (Solomon) involved, Lloyd sees a person leaving the board and the reappearing as an assistant coach to be cool and normal. If Carlton had done something similar, he'd be all over it.

But it's okay, because 'Solly' is one of the loyalist people you'll ever meet, he has so much passion for the Essendon Football Club,,he only has the Bombers' best interests at heart, blah, blah, blah. You genuinely can't rely on an Essendon person to give a decent critique of another Essendon life member.

Brad Scott had to go ultimately: late in the year or at the end of the year. But with Welsh at the helm, Solomon to be installed, Stanton around, the likes of Watson and Lloyd promoting the old school tie any chance they get... they'll most likely give Solomon or Hird the permanent gig, or pitchfork another outsider within three years.

Essendon are weird in that they have this old retired group of narcissists who just can't let go because their egos are tied to the club. The worst of them being Sheedy, who is still arguably behind the scenes causing trouble despite what the club says. Compare him to Pagan who gracefully knew when to hand the reigns off at North and understands that everyone's time in the sun comes to an end.

And now once again Essendon go back to the past with Solomon as the interim.

And, you half-can't blame them - look at the Essendon forum and their social media. Damn near half their supporters want Hird back, too.

The whole club is consumed by past glory and cult of personality.

If you think it was trying to hide their idiot decision on a Tuesday like politicians do, fair enough. I think it stinks. The timing, the decision, it all stinks. There are Essendon figures like Sheedy who still seem to be backing Hird, so they are capable of utterly insane decisions, that is clear.

I think Neale Daniher was a fine Essendon person, maybe I'm over reacting because this seems a slimy intrusion on his passing.

I sympathetic you are upset, I am annoyed too because I think Essendon are a great club with a great tradition, and Scott (and Rutten) were decent blokes. The club, the past players, the supporters all deserve better.

I hate how coaches carry the can when so much of footy is the business side.

the only thing im upset about is you essentially making the accusation we are using the death of a great of our club as some type of hoodwink situation. Its a pathetic view to have.

the rest, i am entirely ok with.

EFC - "Dean Solomon has joined Scott’s staff as an assistant for next season, taking the reins of team defence, stepping away from his prior role as a Director on the Club’s Board."

How ironic....

We’ve been embarrassing for over two decades now. To bring that campaigner hird back, who is a major factor in why we’ve been this bad would be beyond ludicrous.

How are you able to be on the same page and unify behind a coaching decision if some people in high positions want Hird?

I think he needs a clear run at it so you can finally move on weither Hird has success or not.

not almost, Carlton's exiting of Voss was significantly more professional and looked from the outside to be clean and rancor free.
It wasn't that professional. Everyone at the club knew last year that Voss would be gone at some point this year and yet they let him start the year. Still somehow more professional than Essendon

Don’t forget, not Nathan Buckley because he doesn’t come from a winning culture 😂

They are on a hiding to nothing because they need someone who is strong enough to cut through all the Essendon bullshit, but anyone who does that won't appeal to the Essendon people making the appointment.

I'm not a massive fan of Brad Scott or a hater (I miss the LOLs when he was North coach) but he was undermined by Essendon people for the entirety of his stint at the club. There is never any consistent messaging coming out of the club and the whole "strategy" thing makes you scratch your head.

Essendon had 6 players under the age of 24 on Friday. Yes they also have Edwards, Blakiston, Bryan and Reid who are older but haven't played a lot of footy. Richmond had 12 players under 24. We had 13 and just under 450 games less experience. They seem to want to sell that they have the list profile of a rebuilding club (they don't) and that they competitive (they aren't) but also their strategy is to get younger via the draft (isn't that rebuilding?) but also trading a 30 year old for 3 picks in the 10-20 range is a bad idea because reasons.

You can look at the average WC/Richmond 23 and clearly see they a few years off. If we keep the same team for the next two weeks it will be the first time this year and probably the first time in a couple of years we won't have fielded at least one <10 gamer. You put the Essendon 23 side by side with Freo and tell me what is so different other than talent and performance.

Average age 25, 2078 total games played, 1 x 250 gamer, 4 x 150 gamers, 6 x 100 gamers, 2 x 50 gamers, 10 x <50 gamers.
Average age 25, 2113 total games played. 3 x 150 gamers, 6 x 100 gamers, 8 x 50 gamers, 6 x <50 gamers.

Who at Essendon - or coming into Essendon - is going to put their hand up and admit not trading Merrett was a mistake, expectations are all over the place etc. and put forward an actual strategy/plan?

Accoding to Tom Morris at least 80% of Dons fans want him back.

Who's we? Im not accusing you of anything. Like most of the Bombers on here we you seem sensible enough.

The clubs timing stinks. The presidents timing stinks.

Im probably overly emotional about this, so I will stfu now.

I read about 8 pages of the Essendon Big Footy board's thread on Brad Scott leading up to and following his sacking and they seem a pretty pragmatic and fed up bunch to me. I've hardly seen any posts that are cheering the Welsh/Solomon takeover, or a possible return of Hird. I'm guessing there's probably some sarcastic/troll posts that people are taking too seriously.

I have been thinking about it and in a way it's win/win for the old boys gang. Either they turn things around and they become messiahs, or they fail and people spend another two decades talking about how great Hird, Lloyd and the 2000 team was.
